Early years
Favre grew up in Kiln, a small town on the Gulf of Mexico in Mississippi.
Brett Favre was born in Gulfport, Mississippi, to Bonita Ann (nee French) and Irvin Ernest Favre. He grew up in the small town of Kiln. Both of his parents worked in the Hancock County School District as teachers. He has some French blood in him. Simon Favre, a Creole who was a powerful person in Spanish West Florida in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, is one of his ancestors. Brett was the second of four children. He went to Hancock North Central High School, where he played baseball and football.
Favre started playing baseball for Hancock North Central when he was in eighth grade, and he got five varsity letters for his efforts. His father, Irvin Favre, was the head coach of the Hawks football team. He played quarterback, lineman, strong safety, placekicker, and punter in an offense that was mostly based on running the ball.
Favre spent his early years playing football at North Central Hancock High School. Because of how well he could throw, he got a scholarship to Southern Miss.
Irvin Favre said that he knew his son had a good arm and that he also knew the school had a lot of good running backs. So, when Brett was on the team for three years, his father ran the wishbone, a running-based offense. In most games, Favre didn’t throw more than five passes. Mark McHale, an assistant football coach at the University of Southern Mississippi, went to a Hancock North Central football game to watch Brett Favre play after many nearby coaches told him to do so. In the two games McHale watched, Favre mostly passed the ball to running backs. He was about to leave when he saw Favre throw the ball in such a fascinating way that he later said the ball “had smoke and flames coming off of it.”
Going to college
After high school, assistant coach McHale pushed Southern Mississippi to give Favre a football scholarship. That was the only one he got. Southern Miss wanted him to play defensive back, but Favre wanted to play quarterback. Favre started his freshman year as the seventh-string quarterback. On September 19, 1987, in the second half of the third game of the year against Tulane, he took over as the starting quarterback. Favre led the Golden Eagles to a come-from-behind win with two touchdown passes, even though he had a hangover from the night before and threw up during warm-ups. During his first year as a starter, Favre played in ten games and won six of them.
The Golden Eagles beat #6 Florida State on September 2, 1989, when Favre was in his junior year. With 23 seconds left in the game, Favre threw the touchdown pass that won the game. This was the end of a six-and-a-half-minute drive.
Favre was almost killed in a car accident on July 14, 1990, just before the start of his senior year at Southern Miss. Favre lost control of his car when he went around a bend a few tenths of a mile from his parents’ house. The car flipped three times and came to rest against a tree. Favre could only be rescued and taken to the hospital after one of his brothers broke a car window with a golf club. His mother was with him in the ambulance. “All I could think to ask her was, ‘Will I be able to play football again?'” Favre later thought back. Doctors would later cut Favre’s small intestine by 30 inches (76 cm). On September 8, eight weeks after this happened, Favre led Southern Miss to a comeback win against Alabama. Favre used to hold a number of football records at Southern Miss, but Austin Davis broke most of them by the end of the 2011 season.
Favre had 15 games in which he threw for more than 200 yards. This puts him fourth on the all-time list for passing yards at his school. Five of those 15 games were 300-yard games, which was the most by any quarterback at the school. During his four years at Southern Miss, he was also the season leader in both total passing and total offense.
Favre went to the University of Southern Mississippi and got a degree in teaching with a focus on special education.
