Do Arnheid and Ketil both die in Vinland Saga season 2? Fate of the escaped slave and the slave owner explored.
After 17 weeks of build-up, the battle between King Canute’s royal army and Ketil’s forces is finally reaching its long-awaited conclusion in this week’s episode of Vinland Saga.
MAPPA’s popular Viking anime is known for being incredibly brutal and is certainly not afraid of killing off its main characters, with fans around the world now concerned for the fate of both Ketil and Arnheid– ironic, when considering one is a slave owner, and the other his slave.
So, do Arnheid and Ketil both die in Vinland Saga season 2?

Does Arnheid die in Vinland Saga?
Yes, Arnheid does sadly die in Vinland Saga after finally succumbing to the injuries sustained in the beating by Ketil for trying to escape with her husband Gardar.
In season 2 episode 18, which aired on May 8, Ketil proceeds to severely beat Arnheid with a wooden stick even after she reveals that she is pregnant with her child. Whilst Snake is able to stop Ketil from executing her then and there, Arnheid falls into a coma and is left unconscious in the care of Pater.
In the next episode, Einar and Thorfinn have escaped with Arnheid in a cart as she dreams about riding with Gardar and their son Hjalti through a forest. Tragically, Arnheid realizes that she is about to die as Gardar explains in the dream that “we have a warm home waiting for us. It’s been a long and difficult road. But that pain will end soon.”
Arnheid then wakes up to hear the sounds of battle coming from Ketil’s forces fighting King Canute. She asks Einer where they are heading, to which Leif explains that they are traveling to his village.
However, Arnheid says that she will instead travel somewhere else far away since there are still slaves and war in the world; she thanks both Thorfinn and Einar for helping her and sadly dies, telling them both that her deceased family is already waiting for her on the other side.
In Vinland Saga season 2, Arnheid is played by Japanese voice actress Mayumi Saco. Fans may recognize Saco as the voice of Rikka in In/Spectre, Kai in Dragon Crisis, and Isabelle in Great Pretender.
Does Ketil die in Vinland Saga?
No, despite sustaining horrific injuries during the battle with King Canute’s forces, Ketil does manage to survive the conflict.
Within the space of just a few short hours, Ketil’s life was turned completely on its head after King Canute decided to reposit his farm, resources, and slaves to serve his army – only just after Ketil had made an impressive offering to the young King.
However, Ketil refused to give up his life’s accomplishments without a fight, garnering over 300 ‘soldiers’ in order to battle the royal forces and Jomsvikings.
During the battle, Ketil is severely injured by one of King Canute’s men and is knocked unconscious. Thankfully, the soldier did not recognize that it was Ketil himself, leaving him lying on the battlefield until Snake was able to retrieve him.
After regaining consciousness, Ketil is distraught to learn that Arnheid died during their escape attempt and announces that he will be retiring – but at least he has saved his own life in the process.
Ketil is voiced by Hideaki Tezuka, who is best known for playing A in Naruto, Suberoa in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, and Adrian in Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
