Ed Young Obituary-Death News; Caldecott Medal-Winning Author-Illustrator, Ed Young Passes Away

Ed Young, an author and illustrator who won the Caldecott Medal for his evocative images created in a variety of media and his reinterpretations of Chinese folktales and legends, passed away on September 29 in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. He was 91.

In the Chinese coal mining community of Tianjin, Ed Tse-chun Young was born on November 28, 1931. He grew raised in Shanghai with his four siblings while his father served as the engineering dean at St. John’s University. Young enjoyed making up stories when he was little and showed early signs of sketching talent.

Young, who arrived in the country at the age of 19 on a student visa, attended City College in San Francisco and the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He first majored in architecture before deciding to pursue art.

Following his graduation from Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design in 1957, he relocated to New York City to begin a job in advertising and also started taking further art classes at Pratt Institute. He liked to draw animals in his spare time at the Central Park Zoo and other locations around the city.
