Former Plantation Councilman Ralph Merritt and his wife Gloria were found deceased on Thursday. According to preliminary investigations, the incident is believed to be a case of homicide-suicide, as stated by the police.

According to Detective Robert Rettig, a spokesperson for the Plantation Police, the Merritts were reportedly experiencing health issues. According to the statement given by an individual, the couple was discovered deceased at a residence within the city on Thursday morning.

Detectives are currently engaged in an active investigation, Rettig said.

“It is with great sadness that today we extend our condolences on the passing of former Plantation Councilman Ralph Merritt and his wife, Gloria,” the City of Plantation Florida announced in a social media post.

No further details was made available.

Ralph was first elected to the council in 1975, serving the city for over 25 years. He also had a long record of community service, including Kiwanis, Jaycees and the Plantation Chamber of Commerce.

Gloria was also very active within the city, serving in various positions with the GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club. The family owned a successful flower shop, Rena’s Flowers of Merritt, for over 50 years.
