How to Cast a Play

In our travels to various conferences we’ve heard of a lot of different ways to cast school plays. Here are a few of the casting techniques we have encountered:

“Traditional” auditions

Set up similarly to a professional audition. Students come in one by one with prepared material (monologue and/or song) and the director casts based on the merits of their preparation and abilities. This is how auditions worked in my high school and I never really considered that there would be any other way.

Pros: You learn how committed students are by how much effort they put into their audition piece. Everyone is given an equal opportunity to shine.

Cons: Some great actors are terrible at monologue auditions, and vice versa. You have to hold a round of callbacks in order to see how the students interact with each other. Newbies can be very intimidated by having to do a monologue.

Group readings from the script

Everyone interested in the play gets together and reads from the script. The director mixes and matches actors in order to find the optimal casting.

Pros: Everybody gets an equal shot. Less intimidating for newbies. The whole play can be cast in one session.

Cons: Can be time-intensive if a lot of people are interested. Students who have worked together before will probably read better together putting newbies at a disadvantage.

Self Casting

I can’t believe this one actually works, but yes, I’ve talked to directors who give the script to the students and let them cast the play on their own!

Pros: Works best if the cast size equals the number of people interested in the play. Students will have a stronger ownership of the show if they’re this involved in putting it together.

Cons: It would be tough for a newcomer to break in. Casting could be based on popularity instead of merit.

Don’t have auditions at all

Some directors don’t have auditions. They choose the cast based on students they know from their classes.

Pros: Much easier and less time-intensive for the director.

Cons: Students are removed from the casting process, making the whole scenario opaque. Auditioning is part of the total experience of putting on a play.

What about you? What casting technique works best for you and why?

I am a middle school drama teacher. My goal is for students to have fun with auditions while still showcasing their abilities. When I cast a show I have students audition in small groups–usually 5 or 6 at a time. I feel like this helps with nervousness. No one is alone and 6th graders can learn from older students. We do a character walk–where I ask students to move through the playing space in different ways–slow motion, as royalty, as if they are lost, feeling sick, as though they are nervous, being sneaky, in love, worried, etc. What I ask of them depends on the show we are doing and the kinds of characters and emotions needed for the roles. Then I have them read a scene with someone else in the group. I give them 2-3 minutes to look over the scene and then they do it. If I am casting a musical, I will have students sing Happy Birthday as a group and then they can sing a song of their choice individually if they would like.

I always do cold readings – noting that these day fewer and fewer will prepare a monologue. And for callbacks – I have the same scenes. I note who are not good at cold readings and coach and help. I also notice that if young actors not good at cold readings and still put themselves on the line – out of their element and away from their safe place if they are willing to do that – imagine how hard they will work for you in a production.

At my school, every 5th grader must do a semester class which is a musical. So, we sit in a circle together and read the whole play a few times with students playing different parts each time. I then ask them to tell me the top three/four parts they would like to play. I warn them that if they only choose the biggest parts the competition will be fierce, so to include other parts. Then, I take that list home and think about what I know about the students and what I heard from each student’s delivery. Then, I manage to give everyone one of the parts they asked for. All the kids are then happy with who they are as they feel part of the process in determining who they will portray.

How to Cast a Play

Smartphones have become a sort of catch-all for our digital media collections, and it’s not uncommon to have a couple of movies tucked way for those times when you have nothing better to do. If you have a Chromecast, though, you’ll probably need an extra app to get those movies onto the big screen.

The App You’ll Need: LocalCast

As you probably know, you can use Google Photos to get photos and video from your phone to your TV with its built-in casting option. On Android, you can also use this to cast locally stored movies from your phone to your TV by jumping into the Device Folders menu, then finding your movie.

The thing is, this is far from the ideal app for this sort of situation. Sure, it’ll work in a pinch, but in my experience, the video was very choppy, and Google Photos didn’t support a lot of the common codecs you’ll see in ripped and downloaded movies. Thankfully, there’s a much better option available for both iOS and Android: LocalCast.

The app is freely available for both iOS and Android, though it does offer in-app purchases to remove ads and unlock more features. The free app itself is pretty powerful on its own though.

So if you’re looking to stream more than just locally-stored pictures and videos, you can step your casting game up with LocalCast. This is a super useful app that will allow you to cast any media on your device— including pictures, videos, or music—as well as cloud content from Google Drive, Dropbox, and even Instagram (iOS only). It also has network support for casting from network-attached storage, and a built-in web browser for casting videos from the web. This makes it a great choice for movies, because it doesn’t matter where you have them stored.

To make it even more versatile, it also supports casting to a number of devices: Chromecast, Apple TV, Fire TV, Sony and Samsung Smart TVs, Xbox 360/One, or any other DLNA device.

It supports a variety of audio and video formats, but if you have problems, check out LocalCast’s FAQ—it’s possible your video or audio format isn’t supported by LocalCast or by your Chromecast.

How to Cast a Video to Your TV with LocalCast

The interface is pretty straightforward on both iOS and Android, staying true to the respective design guidelines for each platform. The functionality is mostly the same between the two, and it’s pretty intuitive to use—if you’re familiar with your current operating system, then you shouldn’t have any issues using LocalCast.

Once you launch the app, use the cast button in the bottom right corner and choose your casting device. From there, just navigate the app normally and choose the movie you’d like to watch.

How to Cast a PlayHow to Cast a Play

On iOS, all the navigation options are at the bottom of the interface (see below left); on Android, everything is tucked into the menu on the left-hand side (see below right). Just find the category that suits what you’re looking for, and stream away. When you’re finished, just tap the cast icon again and disconnect from there.

How to Cast a PlayHow to Cast a Play

Aside from offering options to cast nearly any type of media from a variety of sources, LocalCast also has a very unique feature on Android that allows you to cast a video to the TV, and play the audio on the phone. With a pair of headphones, you can use this as a sort of private listening option. It’s very cool.

To use this feature, tap the “Route audio to device” option on the bottom. Once enabled, the audio will play on the device, though it’s noted that it may be slightly out of sync. To fix this, the app offers quick +/- 0.1 second audio syncing. It’s pretty legit.

How to Cast a PlayHow to Cast a Play

If you’re into LocalCast after trying it out for a while, you may want to consider jumping on the Pro version of the app. On iOS, this will set you back $4.99 and removes all ads.

How to Cast a Play

On Android, however, it works a little differently. It uses a “pay what you want” model with several different options, including $0.99 a month, one-time payments of $4.92 or $6.57, or yearly offerings of $5.50, $6.88, $10.67, or $21.30. Take your pick.

How to Cast a PlayHow to Cast a Play

Regardless of which level you pick, it will remove ads, make the navigation bar translucent (on supported devices), add on-device search, allow you to preview local videos, and more. It’s pretty solid.

Recently, the popular free media player, VLC was updated to version 3.0 “Vetinari” that adds Chromecast support. Here’s how it works.

Recently, the popular free media player, VLC was updated to version 3.0 and it received some great new features in addition to some slight design tweaks. One interesting and helpful new feature is Chromecast support. This allows you to cast supported media files stored on your local Windows PC to Chromecast, so you can enjoy it on the big screen.

Cast Local Videos from Windows 10 to Chromecast

Make sure you have the desktop version of VLC 3.0 or above installed on your PC — this also will work with Windows 7. Then load it up with the video or other supported media file (i.e. FLAC or APE) you want to play. From the VLC toolbar go to Playback > Renderer and choose your Chromecast device. If you don’t see it listed in the menu, click Scan to find it.

How to Cast a Play

Keep in mind that your mileage may vary with this. While the feature is available, I’ve had mixed results in my testing. I’ve tested it using two different Windows 10 systems and two different Chromecast devices, and multiple audio and video formats – even physical discs. The results are random and sometimes the audio or video just wouldn’t play to the Chromecast. It’s also worth noting that the first time you try it, you might get a message from your Windows firewall asking for permission to send the signal through.

Cast from Android

You can also stream from VLC 3.0 on Android as well. This might seem redundant since it’s all Google, and you can cast anything from your Android device to Chromecast. But, since VLC can play virtually any media file format you throw at it, this ability can come in handy if you have a local file on your phone you need to play. Just select media content and tap the “cast” button at the top and choose the Chromecast you want to send it to. Once it’s playing you can swipe down on the notification shade and control playback from there, too.

If you’re not a VLC user, there are other ways to beam your local files from Windows to your Chromecast. One of my favorite free utilities for it is Videostream. And, we’ve covered some cool tricks using the Chrome browser on Windows 10. For more on that, read our article: How to Play Local Media Files from Windows PC to Chromecast.

You can use Google’s Home to cast Spotify (and other streaming music services) to your sound system with Chromecast using voice commands. The instructions for how to do this provided by both Google and Spotify assume you have either a Chromecast-equipped TV or Chromecast Audio. You don’t need either. You can use the base Chromecast to cast both audio and video. Here’s how to do it.

Connecting Chromecast and Home

Connect a Chromecast to an HDMI input on your A/V processor, receiver or TV. If it’s a new Chromecast, set it up using the Google Home app on a mobile device or laptop. The setup process is straightforward, just follow the onscreen prompts.

Google will assign a name to your Chromecast like “Chromecast0836”. You’ll have to tell Home your Chromecast’s name when you tell it to cast music so you might want to change the default name. Tap the “Devices” icon in the upper right-hand corner of the Home screen. Tap the “More” icon (three vertical dots) in the upper right-hand corner of the Chromecast card. Tap “Settings”. Tap “Name” and enter the name you want to use for your Chromecast when you talk to Home.

Connecting Spotify and Home

You have to subscribe to the premium version of Spotify to link it to Home. Make sure Spotify is installed on the same device where you have your Home app. In the Home app, tap “Listen”. On the Spotify tab, tap “Link”. Follow the onscreen prompts to link your Spotify and Google accounts. You’ll need to sign in to Spotify with your password.

Home comes with Google Play Music set as the default but you can change it to Spotify or any other music service linked to your Google account. Tap the “Devices” icon in the Home app. Tap “More”, then “Settings”, then “Music”. All of your linked music services will appear and you can set whichever one you like as the default by tapping the empty circle to the left of the service.

Ready to cast.

Casting Spotify to your sound system

If you simply tell Home to play music, it will play through Home’s speaker. In order to cast Spotify to your sound system, you need to tell Home to send the music to your Chromecast. The general format is “OK Google, play [what you want to hear] on [the name of your Chromecast]. You can play songs, albums, artists, playlists and genres. Here are some examples.

  • “Hey Google, play Werewolves of London on [name your Chromecast]”
  • “Hey Google, play Let Me Out by the Gorillaz on [name your Chromecast]”
  • “Hey Google, play the song Try A Little Tenderness by Otis Redding from the album Live in Europe on [name your Chromecast]”
  • “Hey Google, play my playlist [name your playlist] on [name your Chromecast]”
  • “Hey Google, play some Trap music on [name your Chromecast]”

If you hear something you like , Home will tell you what it is if you ask. “I like this song” or “Favorite this song” will add it to your “Songs” list; “Dislike” will stop the song from playing and remove it from “Songs”. “Like”, “Favorite” and Dislike” also work with albums.

Some other useful Spotify commands are “Shuffle”, “Play this song again” and “Skip forward [x] seconds”.

Chromecast ready to cast.

Home doesn’t always do what you expect and Spotify doesn’t always do what you want. I found that Home will occasionally play songs from Google Play Music even though Spotify is set as the default. If you give Home the exact same voice command, the track will start from the beginning on Spotify. Is it a bug? A feature designed to draw you to Google Play Music? Who knows?

Sometimes Home will tell you that Spotify is being used by a different device when you try to cast through Chromecast. This happens because Spotify doesn’t differentiate among the Spotify apps you have on different devices. If you get this message, figure out where Spotify is being used (a track may be paused) and shut it down.

Google’s voice recognition is powerful and sophisticated and it interacts well with Spotify. Experiment with it and see what works. Listening to music on your main sound system while you control Spotify’s vast music library with your voice is a treat. Home, Chromecast and Spotify make a sweet trio.

Google’s new Chromecast is a little limited in what it can do. It won’t store a video library for you to play back later. It won’t play Quicktime files. But, it will play lots of other files on your television–things like Flash streams and MKVs you’ve downloaded from, say, a torrent tracker.

Contrary to a lot of what’s been reported, you can watch local files on a Chromecast device. Pretty much anything that plays in a browser will play on your TV. Instead of streaming directly from Netflix or YouTube or some other Cloud source, as Chromecast does when you launch an app using the Googlecast SDK, you can also sling video directly from your computer to the device by using the Chrome browser.

This opens up your TV to lots of, um, alternate sources of video. MKV files, MP4 video, AVI. You want to make sure you’re grabbing an MKV that’s encoded using AAC and not AC3, as it’s one of the formats Chromecast does not yet support. (For a complete list of supported media types, see this page.)

Step one: Install the Chromecast browser extension.

Step two: Connect your browser to Chromecast (this should take less than a minute).

Step three: Drag and drop the file you want to play into the Chrome browser.

Step four: Click the browser extension and select “Cast this tab.”

__Step five: __That’s pretty much it. Kick back.

How to Cast a Play

Most of us today are spending more and more time at home with family. There are times when you want to watch some old photos and videos on a big screen and start wondering how to do it? Or, what’s the easiest way to do it?

Now, there are several ways to do it, one of them is by transferring all the photos and videos one-by-one to a thumb drive and plug it into the TV and start watching. However, that is a cumbersome process and will take lot of time in selecting and transferring.

Most smart TVs today come with a built-in feature called Screen Mirroring and with smart TVs becoming more accessible day-by-day, casting phone’s screen to a TV has become a child’s game. Now, TV brands like to name this feature differently. Some call it Miracast, while some call it simply Screen mirroring or Cast. Also, if you have a smart TV that runs Android TV operating system, it comes with Chromecast feature. Also, Amazon Fire TV Stick also offers similar features.

Now, another thing to note here is while most of them are meant to accomplish similar things, but they work in a different way. For example, Miracast or screen mirroring feature will simply mirror your phone’s screen. So whatever is displayed on your smartphone, will mirror to the TV screen. But, Chromecast is meant to cast mostly multimedia content, which means, users are free to use their phones for other tasks after initiating the Cast feature.

Whether you have a Google Home, a Chromecast Audio or a Chomecast built-in audio device, here’s how to use it as part of a multiroom music system.

Ever dreamed of having a future home? One where your music plays in multiple rooms simultaneously, and from multiple devices, party-style? Google’s Chomecast technology, formerly known as Google Cast, can realize that dream for an affordable price.

The $35 Chromecast Audio , the Google Home speaker , and numerous other Chromecast built-in devices such as the Sony STR-DN1080 receiver and the JBL Playlist speaker, can now work in concert together throughout your home. You can create groups of multiple devices and send music, news or whatever to any or all of them at the same time, using the Google Home app on your phone.

If you’re serious about multiroom music then Sonos and other systems, such as Samsung’s multiroom system or Play-Fi, might be better investments. But they cost a lot more and require you to buy Sonos speakers exclusively or other expensive components. An inexpensive Chromecast Audio dongle works with virtually any powered speaker or audio system.

Here’s how to set it up.

Here’s everything the Google Home can do

How to Cast a Play

How to Cast a Play

Getting started

First you’ll need to connect your device to the network. If you’re using a third-party Chromecast product, such as the Sony receiver mentioned above, follow the usual connection method as directed by the device. This could mean using the device’s smartphone app or navigating to the setup routine under the device’s Settings.

If you’ve bought a Google Home or Chromecast Audio, or a device like the JBL Playlist that’s tightly integrated with Google’s ecosystem, connecting it to the network is a little more straightforward. You’ll use the Google Home app for iOS or Android. From the main page of the Google Home app (below left) look for the little “setup” icon in the top right-hand corner, next to the search icon. Pressing that will take you to the Devices tab (below right).

How to Cast a Play

The main page of the Google Home app (left). Touching the devices icon in the upper right, next to search, takes you to the Devices page (right).

Screenshots by David Katzmaier

All of the compatible devices that the app has detected will appear here, and it will inform you whether they need to be set up or not. If for some reason Google Home doesn’t find them, you can press the Add Device button at the bottom of the screen. The setup process walks you through step by step; see “How to set up Google Home” for more info.

How to create groups

A group consists of two or more Chromecast components (such as a Chromecast Audio, Google Home and a Sony receiver) which will operate as if a single speaker. To create one, choose one of the devices on the Devices page and click the “. ” button.

Choose “Create group”, and a setup page appears. Here you can name the group — for example “House Party” if they’re in three living areas — and then choose from the available devices that you’d like to add. The new “House Party” group will now appear on your list as if it was a single device.

Screenshot by David Katzmaier

Use your group in Chromecast apps

There are dozens of apps that support casting, but here we’re going to concentrate on ones that are audio focused. First open up a Chromecast-compatible app, like Spotify or Pandora, and click the Cast button. On the list that appears you’ll see all the available devices as well as any groups you’ve created, such as “House Party”, for example. Choose a group, play a song using the app and the music will play to all the included speakers and devices simultaneously.

The $150 JBL Playlist is one of our favorite Chromecast-compatible devices.

Is Chromecast a Sonos killer?

While the technology shows great promise, it’s not quite able to rival Sonos just yet. The biggest hurdle so far are the apps themselves. It’s one source or app at once. As of writing there are still no Chromecast apps that can integrate multiple streaming services in the way that Sonos’ app does.

So while we wait for the “killer” Chromecast app, the ecosystem is nonetheless an excellent look into the future of low-cost multiroom music. If you’re looking to dip your toes in the house party waters for a very modest outlay, Chromecast built-in is definitely the best place to start.

This option doesn’t seem to be available I’m Windows 10.

I am new to Windows 10 and am still exploring its features. 🙂

I played a video and found out a new option to cast my laptop’s screen. However trying that option didn’t help me, I just want to correct my basics here before I get into it. Here are my questions.

  1. Will I be able to cast my laptop screen to mobile phones? This includes Android, iOS & Windows devices.
  2. I was searching on the net for a How To document for the cast option and didn’t find much information. Can someone provide detailed steps of how to use this feature.
  3. Does this feature uses bluetooth or just that the devices which we use to cast should be connected to internet or on to the same network?

Make sure your TV is allowed in Windows Media Player (Windows Media Player -> Stream -> More Streaming Option and give sufficient permissions to your TV – it must show up here)

If still struggling, take a look at this thread:

The M4A format, also known as MPEG-4 Audio, has been popularised in recent times by Apple with its iTunes service. However, you may need to convert your music tracks to the better-supported MP3 format to enjoy them on any device.

MP3 remains one of the most popular formats for music, as these files are supported by pretty much any media player out there. It’s not the best option for audio quality, as tracks are compressed quite significantly and some precious data is lost in the process, but that compression also means that MP3s take up comparatively little storage space.

Apple, always one to buck a trend, instead plumped for the newer M4A format on iTunes. Apple’s Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC for short) means your music is stored without information loss, so you’ll get a rich, full-bodied sound. Better still, M4A files often take up less storage space than MP3s, so it’s the best of both worlds.

M4A tracks are supported by a wide range of players and devices these days, not just iPhones and other Apple gadgets. However, you may still want to convert to MP3 to improve the compatibility.

How do I convert an M4A audio file to MP3 using iTunes?

If you use Apple’s iTunes software, then you can convert those tracks from within the app on your computer.

  • Load up iTunes and click on Edit in the toolbar, followed by Preferences.
  • In General Preferences, click on Import Settings.
  • You’ll spy a drop-down box and from inside there, choose MP3 Encoder.
  • Click OK and head back to your iTunes library.
  • Select the track or tracks that you wish to convert to MP3 by highlighting them. Note that you can use the Shift key to highlight multiple songs.
  • Click File, then Convert, then Create MP3 version. Note that you won’t lose the original M4A in the process.

How to convert M4A files to MP3 on your computer without using iTunes

Alternatively you can use one of a multitude of different audio conversion programs that are free to download for Windows and Mac users.

One good example is Switch Audio File Converter from NCH, which is simple to use but also packs in plenty of tools for more advanced users. The basic free version will do the job just fine for M4A to MP3, while the Pro (paid-for) version adds in more functionality.

A completely free alternative is Freemake Audio Converter, which isn’t as swift or as sleek but again gets the job done.

How to convert M4A files to MP3 without installing any software

You can also create MP3s from your M4As using online converters, which perform all of the necessary processing in the cloud. This is a good option if you don’t want to download and install new software on your computer.

One such option is Cloud Convert, which is very simple to use. To get started, simply browse to the M4A files on your computer and select MP3 for the conversion format. Your tracks will be uploaded and all of the hard work is done on those remote servers. Once the job is done, you can then download your freshly created MP3s.

Cloud conversion options tend to be a bit slower, but they work just fine.

How do I convert an M4A audio file to MP3 on my phone?

A cloud conversion solution is also the easiest option when you’re on the go without your laptop. You can upload your tracks as above and then pull down the new MP3s once the conversion is complete.

VPJ files contain the VideoPad project files and can only be opened in VideoPad Video Editor. Cause the VPJ file is a merely project file, it does not contain the actual video or audio data. Q: I edited a video of my turtle on a movie editor I downloaded and saved as a .vpj file but at the moment cannot be opened on anything! It would be greatly appreciated if you could give me a way to convert VPJ to MP4 or other formats.

Q: So now, I can’t find any file converter online that will convert a .vpj file. Does anyone know either a free converter that will do this or a different way that I can convert this file to MP4? Thanks!

There are many people who say they can’t convert VPJ files. Are you one of them? In fact, the problem is that VPJ files are only project files generated by VideoPad Video Editor. They do not contain the actual video or audio data, they are just sessions to save work in progress. When the location of the video clips used changes, the file would be fail to open. 65 thoughts to “How to Convert Video to Audio (Mp3) using VLC”

i’ve been trying literally all night to convert an mp4 video to an mp3 sound file, and even though I go through all the steps EXACTLY LIKE THE INSTRUCTIONS SAY TO DO, i end up with a TEXT/EDIT DOCUMENT saved on my computer that is not music AT ALL. Within the VLC window – the little box where the action is happening – the file looks and plays like a sound file. But outside of that box, on my desktop, the file is NOT a sound file. It’s gibberish text. I’ve tried to move the playable sound file out of the VLC box into Itunes, or onto my desktop, but it doesn’t move. I have a MacBook Air, OS 10.14.6, so I can’t fathom what’s going on, but I am seriously about to gnaw off my own arms I’m so frustrated.

First make sure you have the newes version of VLC. I got an issue when i opened the file that a want to convert in the VLC player. I had to open the application (VLC) without files.

YouTube is where some of the best videos live but Facebook is where lower quality bootlegged versions of them are uploaded. Jokes and copyright infringement aside, Facebook has a lot of video content. It might pale in comparison to YouTube but that still doesn’t mean you can rule it out as a place to watch videos. Lots of pages run solely by sharing videos and some pages like Mental Floss are actually fun to watch. If you’ve got a Chromecast hooked up at home, you can even cast a Facebook video to your Chromecast. Here’s how.

Casting From Facebook Web

You must be running the latest version of Chrome. You do not need to install the official Chromecast extension however, you must have the Chromecast device already set up and ready to receive a stream.

Find a video you would like to watch and play it. If videos auto-play in your timeline, look at the bottom right corner of the player and you will see a Cast button between the settings and full screen buttons. Tap it and Chrome will prompt you to select your Chromecast device. Once the device has been selected, the video will be cast to your TV/monitor.

How to Cast a Play

On Facebook Apps For iOS And Android

Facebook’s apps support both Chromecast and AirPlay (iOS only). Look for a video you want to watch and tap it. You can’t cast the video from your timeline view. It must switch to its own viewing mode. Inside this viewing mode, you will see a cast button next to the full screen button. Tap it. On iOS you’ll get two casting options; Chromecast and AirPlay. On Android, you will only see Chromecast.

Tap the ‘Chromecast’ button and select your device to start casting the video.

How to Cast a Play How to Cast a Play

Facebook has been experimenting with Chromecast support for awhile. It never really came out and made the feature official and its smartphone apps always update silently with a boilerplate change log. When the support was officially added is hard to say but it’s there now and working well.

Stream nearly any media file in seconds

VLC is a media player you can use on your computer, but it’s also a handy way to send videos and music to your Chromecast. Using VLC with Chromecast lets you share nearly any media file with your TV in seconds.

Maybe you want to play iTunes on your TV, send some home videos to the living room big screen, or stream something live through VLC and forward it to your HDTV. No matter the reason, VLC makes connecting your computer to your Chromecast very easy.

How to Cast a Play

Cast VLC Media Files to Chromecast

Step 1: Download and install VLC. If you have it already, make sure it’s version 3 or newer because that’s when Chromecast functionality was added.

Tip: You can check the version you have through the Help > About menu.

Step 2: Open the Playback > Renderer menu, and then select your Chromecast from the list.

How to Cast a Play

If your Chromecast isn’t listed, double-check that it’s powered on either through a USB port on the TV or a wall outlet. Also make sure the Chromecast and your computer are on the same network.

Step 3: Use the Media menu to import the file you want to play on your Chromecast. There’s an option to select just one file or a whole folder. You can even cast a network stream or disc from your disc drive.

How to Cast a Play

VLC accepts lots of file formats, including popular ones like MKV, MP4, FLV, MP3, and WMA.

Note: If a “Performance warning” notification shows up and nothing is playing on the Chromecast, click OK to convert the file to a format VLC can use.

That’s it! Your TV should now be playing whatever you’ve told VLC to play.

You can also play other things through Chromecast, like Netflix, YouTube, a Chrome tab, or even your entire desktop, but none of those things require VLC.

Things to Remember

  • The video or audio file should begin to play immediately after VLC connects to the Chromecast, but you might have to wait a several seconds depending on the speed of your computer and network. If the file doesn’t start, click play in VLC.
  • Another way to cast media files from your computer to your TV via Chromecast is to first open the file in VLC and then connect to the Chromecast as described in Step 2 above. From there, you might have to hit the play button to start the video/audio.
  • Conversions might take a long time, especially if you’re trying to cast a long video. If you know VLC won’t handle the file unless it’s been converted, consider converting the file to something compatible before adding it to VLC.
  • Hit the stop button in VLC to quit playing the video or audio file on both the TV and your computer. Or, to just stop playback from the Chromecast and watch or listen on your computer only, return to Step 2 above but choose .

How to either present a PDF in full-screen mode like you would with a PPT file, or convert it to PPT for easy presenting.

There are two ways that you would present a PDF as if it were a PowerPoint presentation. You can either open a PDF and view the content in full screen or save the file as a PPT. For the latter, you can then quickly open it up in Microsoft PowerPoint and present as you usually should. Check out the full instructions for both methods below.

How to present a PDF like a PowerPoint presentation:

Open your PDF document with any PDF reader.

Click View and choose ‘Enter Full Screen’.

Depending on your OS, you could also choose ‘Slideshow’.

Present as you regularly would and navigate using the arrow keys.

Press the ‘ESC’ (escape) key to exit the slideshow.

There are a few limitations to using PDF files. You cannot insert quite a few media files, such as animated GIF images into your presentation (you can, but they’d remain static). Furthermore, the PDF file may not come with notes. Because of this, the second alternative would be to convert the PDF back to PPT format, using our free converter.

How to change a PDF back to PPT to present

Drag and drop your PDF file in.

Convert it to PPT, modify it further if needed.

Click ‘Download’ to save your new PPT file.

Convert your PDF back to PPT format in a heart beat

As the most popular online PDF to PPT converter, you can quickly save any PDF document back to its original format via a simple drag and drop. There exists a second tool on our site to convert PPT presentations back to PDF afterward. Once you have the PPT file opened, you may freely present the data as you would normally. If you have an older version of Microsoft Office where the UI may differ slightly, you’d have to click the ‘Slide Show’ tab and choose ‘Play from Start’ to commence a presentation.

While you have a PPT file open, you may also edit the content as you’d like. OCR is available within the PDF to PPT tool, where we will pluck the content of each PDF into an editable PPT file, for your convenience. And while you are on our blog, check out how to insert a PDF into a PowerPoint. Always good to learn new PDF and PPT related tricks!

Easy to convert and present

Regardless of the PDF reader, from Adobe Acrobat/Adobe Reader to Preview, or even on your web browser, you should be able to present PDF like a PowerPOint with ease. If not, our tool is free to use, without the need to convert or download software. As we migrate to the digital space for document management, we hope this guide could be of help. And lastly, good luck with all of your future presentations!

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need a Chromecast for each TV?

Why am I not seeing all of my TVs when I click the cast buttons?

If you have setup each of your TVs with Chromecast you will next want to double check that they are all connected to the same Wifi network. If you have more than one Wifi network, you may have setup some of your TVs on a different Wifi network.

Can I cast from my tablet or phone?

You will need to cast from a laptop or desktop computer.

Are there any other options for casting to multiple TVs?

Yes. One other option is you can use an HDMI cable splitter to hook up one Chromecast to two TVs. The limitation of this option is you will need an HDMI cable running between the two TVs and the splitter will need to be plugged into a power outlet. You will also have to display the same content on the two TVs connected to the same Chromecast.

VR is predominantly a solitary experience. You can share a previously recorded video or photos to the internet, but it is never a live shared experience with others if you discount multiplayer. However, thanks to the abilities to stream over Wi-Fi or the internet, more VR users can begin to share the experience with friends and family close by.

Previously, casting your gameplay to a mobile device was possible on the Oculus GO via the Oculus mobile app. The experience was hit miss at the best of times. With bad connections or being unable to even start casting to your mobile device, it just wasn’t an enjoyable experience to the viewer trying to view the joys of what the VR wearer was seeing.

Oculus has learnt from this rather frustrating experience on the GO and has done some necessary work to improve this experience on the Oculus Quest. Sadly it is still by no means perfect, but it is a huge improvement. Experiences will vary depending on the speed of your Wi-Fi network connection and game being cast, viewers can struggle to get a decent quality picture to no casting options at all if it continues to lose connection to your Quest.

With that said, and you wish to still give casting a go, so people around you can also enjoy the experience or become that ‘backseat driver’, below is a handy guide on how to cast your VR Oculus Quest experience to a number of compatible display devices.

Cast Oculus Quest to an iOS / Android mobile device or tablet

How to Cast a Play

Casting to your phone is much like how you do with the Oculus GO. It is no different from casting to a TV via Google Chromecast, it is just you will be viewing the cast on a smaller screen display. Both may experience the same quality issues and stability.

You can also download the Oculus App to your iPad or Android tablet if you wish to have a bigger viewing experience whilst on the move. Make sure you press the expand button on iOS to enlarge what is an iPhone only app.

Requirements:

  • Oculus Quest 64GB / 128GB
  • iPhone or Android
  • Oculus App (iOS or Android)
  • Wi-Fi network (5Ghz router recommended)

How to cast:

  1. From the Oculus home area, select the Sharing tab.
  2. On the left select the Casting option. This will open your headset to any casting device you set on your phone.
  3. Open the Oculus App and tab the Cast button on the top right corner of the app.
  4. Now select the Oculus Quest that is found nearby.
  5. Now select This Phone from the list of devices to cast to.

Cast Oculus Quest to a Chromecast TV display

How to Cast a Play

Casting to a Google Chromecast is currently under beta, but I have found it to be just as stable and using an Ultra I have had no dropouts or big quality issues that I have found on iPhone.

Casting to a TV display is the best experience for families or groups in a living room environment. It makes it much easier to view than crowding around a tiny mobile display or tablet.

Requirements:

  • Oculus Quest 64GB / 128GB
  • iPhone or Android
  • Oculus App (iOS or Android)
  • Wi-Fi network (5Ghz router recommended)
  • Google Chromecast 2nd Gen, Google Chromecast 3rd Gen or Google Chromecast Ultra, NVIDIA Shield or a Chromecast compatible SmartTV
  • TV/display with an HDMI port for the Chromecast to connect to

How to cast:

  1. Make sure your Google Chromecast is connected and its homepage is viewable on your TV.
  2. Make sure the Oculus Quest, your iOS/Android device and Chromecast is on the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. From the Oculus home area, select the Sharing tab.
  4. On the left side select the Casting option. This will open your headset to any casting device you set on your phone.
  5. Open the Oculus App and tab the Cast button on the top right corner of the app.
  6. Now select the Oculus Quest that is found nearby.
  7. Now select This Phone from the list of devices to cast to.

Cast Oculus Quest to an Apple TV display

How to Cast a Play

This is not officially supported, but there is a workaround to cast to your iPhone and then mirror this to your Apple TV display. Quality may not match the quality of a Chromecast connection as the signal is being cast to your phone and then again to the Apple TV, but its a good alternative if you do not have a Chromecast at hand.

One issue is if you experience any dropouts, having to connect and then mirror again can prove annoying, which is why I eventually opted for a Chromecast Ultra in the end.

Requirements:

  • Oculus Quest 64GB / 128GB
  • iPhone
  • Oculus App (iOS or Android)
  • Wi-Fi network (5Ghz router recommended)
  • Apple TV
  • TV/display

How to cast:

  1. From the Oculus home area, select the Sharing tab
  6. With your Quest casting to your iPhone pull down or swipe up to invoke Control Center and select the Screen Mirroring option
  7. Select Apple TV from your list to mirror your iPhone feed to your Apple TV display

This is my favorite cast on method, I use it almost exclusively. It creates an even, stretchy edge that works well for stockinette stitch or for ribbing. It’s easy to knit from, easy to pick up stitches from, and is probably the fastest cast-on, once you get the hang of it. It’s even faster than Single Cast-On when you take into account that this method creates an already knitted row (technically, anyway…but patterns don’t count this row).

I usually give myself 12″ of tail for every 20 stitches, more generously if it’s bulky yarn. Do what works for your tension: Cast on 20 stitches and unravel it to see how much tail you used.

I specify to dangle the tail from your thumb for two reasons: 1) Your tail length will not fluctuate with the needle size, so it’s easier to estimate yarn. 2) The yarn on the thumb side will tend to “untwist” as you go, but since it’s not attached to the ball end it’s easy to reintroduce the twist as you wish.

Tip: When a pattern calls to “cast on loosely”—important for things like sock cuffs and turtle necks—many people like to go up a couple of needle sizes. I like to cast on over two needles held together as one, which is equivalent to an increase of several needle sizes. Of course, anything in between would also work.

Amazon’s Alexa Cast is a new streaming protocol that makes it even easier to stream media to Amazon’s entertainment devices.

Alexa Cast is a new feature on Amazon products for the streaming and control of media content. It’s similar to Google’s Chromecast and Apple’s AirPlay, and it allows users to transfer the playback of media from a smartphone or tablet to a compatible device.

At launch it’s available in the Amazon Music app, which you’ll need to download and install if you haven’t already. It can control Amazon’s Echo smart speakers; third-party Alexa-compatible speakers, such as the highly rated Sonos One and Sonos Beam soundbar (or any other Sonos speaker if either of those is already on your network); and Apple AirPlay devices.

The casting selection menu in Amazon Music.

How to use Alexa Cast

To use it, look for the “casting” logo in the Amazon Music app. It appears at the top right of the music-selection screen, and second from the right at the bottom of the now-playing window. Tap it on an Android device to bring up a list that includes every Amazon Echo- and Google Chromecast-compatible device on your network. On an iOS device, it will show all Amazon Echo- and Apple AirPlay-compatible devices on your network. Note that AirPlay devices will not appear on the Android app, and Chromecast devices won’t appear on the iOS app.

Mentioned in this article

You can tell the difference between device classes by the logo that’s displayed next to the speaker’s name. There’s a set of wireless bars inside an Alexa logo for Alexa Cast, and you’ll see the familiar casting logo for Chromecast on the Android app. The iOS app will show the Alexa Cast logo and the AirPlay logo, an upward-pointing arrow inside a box.

If you’ve grouped multiple Echo and/or Echo-compatible speakers together using the Alexa app, you can cast to that entire group at once. But you can’t stream to a mix of speakers from the three platforms (Alexa, Chromecast, and AirPlay) at the same time.

The cast button in the Amazon Music app is third from the right on the bottom row.

Touching the AirPlay icon on the iOS app brings up a separate window with a list of the AirPlay devices on your network (you can stream to all of them or any combination, although we couldn’t get a Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Wireless to play with a set of Sonos speakers).

Michael Brown / IDG

Click on the AirPlay icon and the iOS version of Amazon Music will display a list of the compatible speakers on your network.

Alexa Cast works with both Amazon Prime Music (a library of two million songs that’s included with your Prime membership) and Amazon Music Unlimited. The latter is a more comprehensive subscription service you pay extra for: $3.99 per month for streams to a single Amazon device, or $7.99 per month if you also want to stream to your mobile device.

What’s next for Alexa Cast?

Amazon hasn’t said much about Alexa Cast or its future, but it’s difficult to imagine development will stop with streaming music. Amazon already has claws in the video field with Fire TV, and it seems likely the company will expand Alexa Cast to support video streaming from Prime Video.

The company hasn’t disclosed if Alexa Cast will be open to other streaming services, but it seems likely that it will, especially given Amazon’s fierce competition with Google.

Speaking of audio books, you must have heard about Audible.com. As the most popular online audiobook store, Audible.com has provided tons of downloadable digital audiobooks for fans. But it is necessary to point out that the audiobook offered on Audible.com are encoded in AA or AAX file format protected by Audible’s Digital Rights Management (DRM). Customers are not allowed to play DRM-protected .aa or .aax Audible files on iPhone or other mobile devices unless they have purchased audiobooks.

Is there a way to remove DRM protection from Audible AA or AAX audiobooks and convert them to other common audio formats like MP3? Actually, there is more than one way. You can either record Audible content as MP3 file or burn it to a CD and then rip to MP3 format. In the following article, I will introduce three simple methods to help you convert AAX to MP3.

Part 1. Convert AAX to MP3 with powerful AAX to MP3 Converter

As the most professional video converting tool, Video Converter Ultimate supports you to convert any video/audio formats, including AAX to MP3 format. Part 3. Turn AAX file to MP3 without removing DRM

The above methods can be used to convert unprotected AAX files, but if you want a safer way, please keep reading this part. We provide you a legal way of converting AAX files to MP3 format, which is recording.

  • Rename the file extension to .mpg and try playing it in VLC to see if it works.

If you use a Mac, there’s a good chance that you probably won’t ever come across a WMA file, but for those who are familiar with the Windows system and Windows Media Player, the WMA file is pretty common. This file format used to be more popular, but these days, it’s no longer a convenient way to store your audio files.

An MP3 file is typically more versatile for most audio tracks, and as long as you know what to do, you’ll save yourself a lot of time.

Step 1: Go to Cloud Convert

How to Cast a Play

The quickest and easiest way to convert a WMA file to an MP3 file is to use an online converter. There are several great ones out there, but our favorite for this particular task is Cloud Convert. Get your WMA files ready and then head to its homepage.

Step 2: Upload your files

To send your files to Cloud Convert to get the conversion process started, select Select File. Alternatively, select the down arrow next to that button for a greater array of options. Using the drop-down menu, choose whether you want to add files from your computer, send them from your cloud storage service, or just link them from a URL.

Depending on your choice, you’ll be asked to select the files in question from its respective location. Follow along with the on-screen instructions.

Step 3: Choose your file format options

Now that you’ve uploaded the file you want to convert, you need to select the format you want to output to. In our case, that’s MP3. Look for the drop down menu arrow icon next to the phrase Convert to. From the menu that appears, select MP3.

For more advanced options, you can also select the wrench icon. It lets you adjust the bitrate of your output file, the start and endpoint of your conversion, and a few other options.

Step 4: Convert and download

When you feel you’ve set all the options correctly, select the big red Convert button. You’ll see the screen update with a timescale and loading bar for your conversion.

Once the conversion is finished, a green Download button will appear. Select it to begin your download.

Alternative method: MediaHuman (Windows/MacOS)

If you’ve got a lot of files to convert, it might be easier to download a conversion program rather than using a website like Cloud Convert. MediaHuman’s free converter can convert all your WMAs into MP3s with ease.

The software is extremely easy to use, even if you’re not a tech wizard. Simply navigate to the MediaHuman site, download the program for your operating system, and install it on your system. Once open, you can either drag and drop files from your computer into the program, or click the big “+” button in the upper left corner and select the appropriate files.

How to Cast a Playscreenshot

Once you’ve selected the files you’d like to convert, select the Format button. Then select MP3 from the drop-down list of codecs. Then select Close. Then click the Start conversion button, located at the top of the window; it looks kind of like the universal recycling sign. In a matter of seconds (or minutes, depending on the number of files you’ve selected and their size), your conversion will be complete.

To access the converted files on your system, select the select the magnifying glass icon on the right side of the app window. This will automatically open the destination folder (possibly labeled as Converted by MediaHuman) where your completed files — in this case, MP3s — are stored. From there, you can add the files to the library of your favorite media player or upload them directly to an external device.
