How to Change Default Search Engine in Chrome
Changing search engines is a fairly straightforward thing to do, provided you know where to look. Here’s how to find the right setting to achieve that.
Open Google Chrome.
Select the three dots on the right side of your user profile photo.
Alternatively, select File > Preferences or Chrome > Preferences.
Select Settings.
Scroll down to Search Engine.
Select the drop-down menu to choose from pre-selected search engine options.
Select the one you want to change to. Chrome offers Bing, Yahoo!, and DuckDuckGo as alternatives.
What Search Engine Should I Change Chrome To?
It’s entirely up to you. Each search engine has its advantages and disadvantages. Yahoo! is one of the oldest search engines and has a friendly interface, while Bing is Microsoft’s creation and looks a lot like Google.
DuckDuckGo is a great choice if you’re privacy-conscious as it keeps your search history private at all times and blocks advertising trackers. It’s basically Google without the tracking.
How to Manage Your Choice of Search Engines
Google Chrome offers a way to add multiple search engines, so you can easily switch between them using the method detailed above.

How to Add Another Search Engine
It’s possible to add extra search engines to Google Chrome.
Open Google Chrome.

Select Settings.
Scroll down to Search Engine.

Type a keyword that’s easy to remember when typing it into the address bar.
The keyword is the word you type into the address bar to search for it quickly, so make it memorable.
Enter the URL or website address of the search engine.
Select Save.
You’re done! You can now use that search engine by typing its keyword in the address bar.
Google Chrome’s default search engine is, unsurprisingly, Google. For the vast majority of users, that’s just fine. There are those however, who might want to change the default search engine to Yahoo!, Bing, or even add something custom.

Here’s how this works. Normally, when you type a search term into Chrome’s omnibox, it will display results from Google when you hit Enter.
If you want to change this, however, first click the three dots in Chrome’s upper-right corner and head to Settings.
In the Settings, find the area labeled “Search.”
Now, simply click the box where it says “Google” and change it to any of the other default search engines.
If the search engine you want doesn’t appear, you can add a custom one. Click the “Manage search engines” button in the search settings to reveal the following:
Whenever you visit a new site with a search box, it will show up under “Other Search Engines” at the bottom. You can hover over one of these engines and click the “Make Default” button to make it your default search engine, or click the “X” to remove it.
This however, will not happen 100% of the time. If there’s a search engine you want to add that doesn’t appear automatically, you can add it using the “Add a new search engine” box.
For example, let’s say we want to add How-To Geek search. Start by conducting a search on that site, and then copy How-To Geek’s search URL directly from the omnibox.
Look at the URL and find the term you searched. In our case, we searched macos , which shows up after ?q= in the URL.
Replace the search term with %s and paste it into the Add a New Search Engine box under Other Search Engines.

You can now make that search engine the default, if you so choose.
If you don’t want to permanently change your default search engine, you can still easily conduct searches using any search engine in the list. To do this, first type the URL of the search engine into the omnibox and then hit “Tab”. You will see now that your subsequent search terms will be sent to the search engine you entered.
While the chances that you are going to use something other than Google for your searches aren’t likely, you still have the option. Using the method outlined above, now you can use virtually anything else.
Google is the default search engine in Chrome and because it is the most popular search engine today, not many people are interested in changing it. That said, Chrome doesn’t tie you down to its default search engine and you’re free to pick whichever one you want to use. If you’re search engine has been changed by an extension, or an app on your system, you can change that as well. Here’s how.
Chrome Default Search Engine
There are two ways to change the default search in Chrome. You can change it by visiting the home page for the search engine, or you can change it from Chrome’s own settings.

You may already have a bunch of search engines added if you frequently search a particular website for something. Open the ‘Search engine used in the address bar’ dropdown and view the already added search engines. If you see the one you want to use, select it.
If you do not see the search engine you want to use, click Manage Search engines.
Before you can add a search engine, you need the correct search query URL for it. You can look it up with Google, or most other search engines. For example, for DuckDuckGo, you need to enter;
On the Manage search engines page, click Add, and enter the URL in the query field. Give the search engine a name and a keyword. Click save. Next, click the more options button next to the newly added search engine, and select Make default.
Malicious extensions and apps
Chrome is proactive with respect to extensions changing default settings in the browser. It will alert you when an extension has changed your default search engine however, if you’re unable to change it back try the following;
- Uninstall the extension, or desktop app, that’s forcing the change. Chrome can boot extensions that are malicious but desktop apps can and do change the default search engine and browsers don’t have much control over them. Once you’ve removed the app/extension, you should be able to set the default search engine in Chrome to whatever you want.
- You can reset Chrome to get rid of malicious extensions that have taken control of the browsers. In this case, you do not want to back up and restore your Chrome profile folder as that too may be infected. To reset Chrome, open the Browser and click the more options button. Select Settings from the menu, scroll down the settings page, and click Advanced. Scroll to the very end, and click Clean Up Computer. After the clean up is complete, return to this same settings’ area and click Restore settings to their original defaults.
If you’re still unable to get rid of a malicious extension or app, use an anti-virus to scan your system and remove it.

That said, Chrome doesn’t tie you down to its default search engine and you’re free to pick whichever one you want to use. If you’re search engine has been changed by an extension, or an app on your system, you can change that as well. Here’s how.

- To add search engines to Firefox, follow the steps below:
Click on the “Find more search engines” link in the “Search Shortcuts” section. You will be taken to the specific add-ons page where you will see search engine add-ons.
Click on the one you want and then install the add-on. Now you can see this search engine in the search engine drop-down list.
- You can search via any website or search engine using the following steps:
Go to the site and right-click on the search box of the site.
Click “Add a Keyword for this Search.”
Edit the name in the pop-up if you want, enter a keyword, and then click the “Save” button.
From now on, you have to enter the keyword and the search term in the address bar and then press the “Enter” key. You can see the search results for this search term from that specific site.
For example, I created one with the keyword “yt” for “YouTube.” If I type yt hello in the address bar and press the “Enter” key, I see the search results on YouTube for the search term “hello.”
Android
Open the Firefox app.
Tap the three vertical dots at the bottom.
Tap Settings > Search.
“Google” is the default search engine in Firefox for Android.
Select the one you prefer from the list of search engines.
Note:
You can add any website to the list of search engines by following the steps below:
Click on the “Add search engine” option.
Select the search engine available there or add one (To do so, select “Other.” Enter search engine details in the fields). Click on the “Tick” icon at the top right.
