In this tutorial, we are going to learn how to Convert 24 hour format to 12 hour format in C++.
This program converts 24 to 12 hour format.
How to Input the clock format in C++
The time should be in HH:MM:SS where HH denotes Hours, MM denotes Minutes and SS is Seconds.
How to use AM/PM notation?
- We denote 00:00 as 00:00 AM
- 12:00 as 12:00 PM
- 23:00 as 23:00 PM
In this 24 to 12 hour conversion, the hour value is changed and not the minute value.
In the above code, the input variable is twenty_four_hrs. Then the variables hrs and min are declared as integer as time belongs to integer datatype.
How to separate hours and minutes?
On dividing the input time by 100, we will get the hours which is stored in the variable name called hrs.
The same way the minutes on doing, twenty_four_hrs%100, we can get the minutes which is stored into the variable name called min.
Conditions:
In the above code,
- if condition checks, hrs is equal to 00 and hrs not equal to 12 (i.e)00 is nothing but 12 .
- else if condition checks whether hrs is equal to 12 and hrs not equal to 0 then hrs remains with the same 12 denoted in PM.
- else if hrs less than 12 and hrs not equal to 0 then both the hrs and min remains the same.
- if hrs greater 12 and hrs not equal to 0 then hrs=hrs-12 , min remains the same.
INPUT:
C++ program to convert 24 hour format to 12 hour format
When the input is 1245 the hrs=1245/100 becomes 12 and min=0045%100 becomes 45 and from the given conditions.
Then hrs is compared on checking it enters the second else if statement where the hrs and minute remains the same and the output is,
Thus the program coverts from 24 to 12 hour format.
OUTPUT:
We hope this tutorial helped you to understand how to convert 24 hour format to 12 hour format in C++.

About 12h to 24h Time Converter
None of us is living in the 90s era of digital wristwatches anymore. So whenever you need to convert between 12 hour format and 24 hour format, use this 12-hour to 24-hour converter. Simply enter the 12-hour time value into the box on the left and select between ante meridiem (am) or post meridiem (pm) options. Hit the ‘Convert’ button.
To convert 12 hour time to 24 hour time format we follow the steps below:
- If the time is between 12:00 AM and 12:59 AM, we subtract 12 hours.
- If the time is between 1:00 AM and 12:59 PM, 24 hour time is same as 12 hour time.
- If the time is between 1:00 PM and 11:59 PM, we add 12 hours to input time.

There are two primary methods of showing the time. First there’s the 12 hour clock that uses AM and PM, and then there’s the 24 hour clock.
Most countries prefer the 24 hour clock method, but the 12 hour clock is widely used in Latin America and English-speaking countries. In the 12 hour clock method, it is 12:00 twice a day at midnight (AM) and noon (PM).
The table below shows the conversion between the 12 hour and 24 hour clock systems:
| 12 hour clock | 24 hour clock |
|---|---|
| 12:00 AM | 00:00 |
| 01:00 AM | 01:00 |
| 02:00 AM | 02:00 |
| 03:00 AM | 03:00 |
| 04:00 AM | 04:00 |
| 05:00 AM | 05:00 |
| 06:00 AM | 06:00 |
| 07:00 AM | 07:00 |
| 08:00 AM | 08:00 |
| 09:00 AM | 09:00 |
| 10:00 AM | 10:00 |
| 11:00 AM | 11:00 |
| 12:00 PM | 12:00 |
| 01:00 PM | 13:00 |
| 02:00 PM | 14:00 |
| 03:00 PM | 15:00 |
| 04:00 PM | 16:00 |
| 05:00 PM | 17:00 |
| 06:00 PM | 18:00 |
| 07:00 PM | 19:00 |
| 08:00 PM | 20:00 |

12 hour clock
The day is split into two 12 hour periods running from midnight to noon (AM hours), and noon to midnight (PM hours).
The abbreviations AM and PM are from Latin:
- AM: ante meridiem, before midday
- PM: post meridiem, after midday
24 hour clock
The day runs from midnight to midnight and is divided into 24 hours from 0 (midnight) to 23. Time is shown in hours and minutes since midnight.
Converting from 12 hour to 24 hour clock
Starting from the first hour of the day (12:00 AM or midnight to 12:59 AM), subtract 12 hours:
- 12:00 AM = 0:00
- 12:15 AM = 0:15
From 1:00 AM to 12:59 PM, the hours and minutes remain the same:
- 9:00 AM = 9:00
- 12:59 PM = 12:59
For times between 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM, add 12 hours:
- 3:17 PM = 15:17
- 11:59 PM = 23:59.
Converting from 24 hour to 12 hour clock
Starting from the first hour of the day (0:00 / midnight to 0:59), add 12 hours and AM to the time:
- 0:30 = 12:30 AM
- 0:55 = 12:55 AM
From 1:00 to 11:59, simply add AM to the time:
- 2:25 = 2:25 AM
- 9:30 = 9:30 AM
For times between 13:00 to 23:59, subtract 12 hours and add PM to the time:
- 16:55 = 4:55 PM
- 21:45 = 8:45 PM

Here is the content of the two table and both data types are varchar
Table 1 Table 2
Now the problem is i can directly add 12 to the table 1 values by taking substring and converting it into integer but here i dont have 00.00 for 12 Am rather i have 12.00a for the same so if i add 12 to 12.00a it became 24.
I am not able to get if i can use case in where but seems it is not possible , Do you know any other way to do it.
In order for us to provide you the best suggestions, please post the DDL for both tables.
( Have you got this one then, Arnie? Thanks, Arnie; I’ll go ahead with it then.)
Question: How does 12:30 AM appear for table 2 (24 hour clock)
Also, you show ‘12.00a’ on the 12 hour clock translates to ‘1200’ will you please verify this? This looks to me like an error.
declare @table1 table (time1 varchar(6))
declare @table2 table (time2 varchar(4))
insert into @table1
select ‘12.00a’ union all
select ‘12.30a’ union all
select ‘1.00p’ union all
select ‘2.30p’
–select * from @table1
insert into @table2
select ‘0000’ union all
select ‘0030’ union all
select ‘1300’ union all
select ‘1430’
–select * from @table2
select a.time1,
b.time2
from ( select case when right(time1, 1) = ‘p’ then 1200 else 0 end +
100*(cast(left(parsename(reverse(substring(reverse(time1), 2, 5)), 2),2) as tinyint)%12) +
cast(left(parsename(reverse(substring(reverse(time1), 2, 5)), 1),2) as tinyint)
as time1
from @table1
) a
join @table2 b
on a.time1 = cast(b.time2 as integer)
Now, there is another piece of this. And that is that both of these are going to table scan as they are because indexes cannot be employed for lookups. What you REALLY need to consider is converting these tables so that the time values get stored in a standard fashion — either as an integer or as a datetime datatype. This will give the optimizer an optimizer to employ indexes if they are available. And if you are frequently going to join these two tables based on time then you really should try to set it up so that this stuff gets indexed with a standard datatype.
(I don’t think I need these reverses, but I don’t have time to eliminate them either. Will somebody either check me on this or fix this?)
Question
I have a column that is storing time from a 24 hour clock. the data is a straight integer (13=13:00:00, 14=14:00:00). I need to use this integer and convert the number into a 12 hour clock (13=1p, 14=2p).
Any help would be appreciated

Oops, I now see that I missed the requirement to add A or P. Check the other replies for that.
If you also need special case handling for noon and midnight, then the best way is probably to create a 24-row 2-column table with the 24 numbers and their representation, and join to it.

Subtracting 12 days from the time won’t change anything.
Although what I think you’re after is changing the PM time to an AM time, so it displays as 1:00
This would do that:
=A1-(0.5*(A1>”13:00″+0))
Format as h:mm
But of course the time is no longer correct, as it is AM now not PM.

Excel and VBA keep date+time as a number starting with 1/1/1900. So, there’s no concept of 12hour or 24hour time in how the value is stored. It’s only in terms of how it’s shown. Use a format of h:mm:ss AM/PM to see a value in a 12 hour format and a format of hh:mm:ss to see the same value in 24hour format. Change the format to ‘General’ to see how that time value is actually stored.

Convert 12 hour to 24 hour time
Hey,
I have some logs from TV stations, and some come in AM/PM time format, but I need it in 24 hour format to upload to the database (HHMM). I tried going to format and doing a special format to type in HHMM, but that doesn’t convert to 24 hour, it just drops the AM/PM.

put a : (colon) after the [hh]
Re: Convert 12 hour to 24 hour time
Hmmmm, that implies that a hidden date is being imported also. How are you importing data? Can you upload a small sample of your data in Excel? Include that one that reformats to 2500.
Times are told in two formats: the 12-hour format and the 24-hour format. I’m using Access 2003.
I download a file from a server that has the “RegistrationDateTime” field formated as mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss AM/PM EST . I save the download as an Excel file, and then use TransferSpreadshhet to load the info into a Table
I’d like to change the contents of the Table’s RegistrationDateTime field to end up as mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss where hh is based on a 24 hour clock. and also delete the EST
For example. instead of 12/28/2011 07:15:30 AM EST, I’d like it to be 12/28/2011 07:15:30
or if it was 12/28/2011 02:15:30 PM EST, I’d like it to be 12/28/2011 14:15:30
Can this be done as an “update” to the contents of the field?
I am really baffled on how to do this and would appreciate help from the forum.
I have been using a simple Select Query with a criteria that is >[Greater Than What Date and Time]. I then type in the complete date time, AM or PM, and EST.
Because it is text it is like saying criteria > “Pea” and wanting to find “Apple” & ‘Cantolope.”
“P” is greater than “A” or “C” in the alphabet.
Did this solve your problem?
Sorry this didn’t help.
Great! Thanks for marking this as the answer.

I’ve tried to format the specific field to an Access Date/Time format, but get errors. I suspect it’s because of the AM or PM. or maybe the EST at the end.
If you go back and read the earlier post you will see that ‘FORMATING’ which a matter of display IS NOT the same as storage.
Access has text fields and many different types of number fields. A DateTime field is a number field that stores a date as a decimal number with the fraction of a day (hours & minutes) as the decimal part of that number.
When you change formatting all it does is present the information for human viewing in some manner. It does not change how it is stored or how it will be treated mathmatically.
Your data being text is compared as text.
You need to convert your text to a number that represents the date.
Open you table in design view and add a new field and sepect DateTime as the datatype.
Then run an update query to populate that field as a date from your text field using this with your field names —
But remember that you should backup your database before running update queries. I also run a select query on the data just to see what will be happening to the data as a double check before commiting to the update.
Write a program to convert the time from 24-hour notation to 12-hour notation and vice versa. Your program must be menu driven, giving the user the choice of converting the time between the two notations. Furthermore, your program must contain at least the following functions: a function to convert the time from 24-hour notation to 12-hour notation, a function to convert the time from 12-hour notation to 24-hour notation, a function to display the choices, function(s) to get the input, and function(s) to display the results. (For 12-hour time notation, your program must display AM or PM).

I have seen in many Blogs where people asking about several converting time format from 24 hours to 12hours and in most of the cases people have suggested to go for UDF to get the desired TIME format. I hope this blog will be very useful for beginners. Here in this blog i am explaining how to convert time format in different approaches with out udf .
Let’s say we have incoming dates as 05/04/20112 23:57:47 & 06/04/2012 00:01:15 and we want to get the desired output as 05/04/20112 11:57:47 PM and 06/04/2012 00:01:15 AM
To get the above result we don’t need to write any UDF, it is simply possible by using standard functions.
Input: we have to provide CurrentDate function or input parameter.
Approach 1: by using some standard functions for practice
E xample 1 : with currentDate
Open the “currentDate” function of the Date Function Group and double click and then selected format (mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss ) and “Target Format” as shown in below picture.
Step2: Mapping logic as converted from input like “mm/dd/yyyy HH:mm:ss” to “mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss AM/PM”
finally the result is :
example2: Repeat the above logic with “Input parameter” and here we have taken “SYSTEM” as Input parameter.
Approach 2: By using Standard Function “dateTrans”:
we have to select dateTrans Function of the Date Function Group then double click and select input parameter and out parameters based on requirement.
note : if we need hours is 12 hours format then we have to change maually hours HH to hh and add a letter end of the parameter as like showing in picture .
Question
I have a list that is updated with an ETA of when a task will be completed. The user enters the date (date picker) and time.
I then output to a workflow to update the people involved using email. For some reason, the date and time lose the space between so it looks like this: My ETA for finishing the Template is 2/10/201012:30:00 PM.
So now I output separately using ETATime like this: =TEXT([ETA (Template Completion)],”HH:MM)
That fixed the space problem, but now the users don’t like the 24 hour time: My ETA for finishing the Template is around 15:30 on 11-February-2010.
So, not finding how to format the time differently, I then choose to extract the last 11 characters from the date field (=RIGHT([ETA (Template Completion)],11). Of course the time returned is the raw number string of the time, not the nicely formatted time like this – 3:30:00 PM.
Of course I searched for how to format it back, again with no luck!
Is there a format for 12 hour time? Maybe a solution to formatting the date field from the 24 hour format to the 12 hour format with AM/PM, or how to reformat number string for the time using 12 hour formatting with AM/PM.
What are the 12-hour and 24-hour clock?
There are two ways of telling the time:
The 12-hour clock runs from 1am to 12 noon and then from 1pm to 12 midnight.
The 24-hour clock uses the numbers 00:00 to 23:59 (midnight is 00:00).
| 12-hour clock | 24-hour clock |
| 1am | 01.00 |
| 2am | 02.00 |
| 3am | 03.00 |
| 4am | 04.00 |
| 5am | 05.00 |
| 6am | 06.00 |
| 7am | 07.00 |
| 8am | 08.00 |
| 9am | 09.00 |
| 10am | 10.00 |
| 11am | 11.00 |
| 12 noon | 12.00 |
| 1pm | 13.00 |
| 2pm | 14.00 |
| 3pm | 15.00 |
| 4pm | 16.00 |
| 5pm | 17.00 |
| 6pm | 18.00 |
| 7pm | 19.00 |
| 8pm | 20.00 |
| 9pm | 21.00 |
| 10pm | 22.00 |
| 11pm | 23.00 |

Children in Year 1 learn to tell the time on a 12-hour analogue clock which looks like this:
At this point, they learn to tell the time to the hour and half hour.
In Year 2 they learn that there are 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour, and 30 minutes in half an hour. They move onto reading the time to the quarter hour and then the nearest five minutes. They also start to learn about time intervals (working out the length of time between two times).
In Year 3, children learn that there are 60 seconds in a minute. They continue to tell the time with increasing speed and accuracy. Here is an example of a time interval word problem involving the 12-hour clock that they might come across:
I put some lamb in the oven at 10.30 in the morning. I take it out at 11.20 the same morning. How long has it been in the oven?
In Year 4, children need to convert between units of time (hour and minutes). They need to read, write and convert time between analogue and digital 12-hour and 24-hour clocks.
In Years 5 and 6, children are asked to solve problems involving converting between units of time. A Year 5 or 6 child might come across a problem like the following, that requires them to work out a time interval using their knowledge of both the 12-hour and 24-hour clock:
I get the 13:46 train to Manchester, which takes exactly three hours and five minutes. How many minutes before 5pm do I arrive in Manchester?
If a child were struggling with this, they might be encouraged to draw a number line in order to count forward the 3 hours and 5 minutes:
They could then convert the 24-hour clock time to 12-hour time, which would be 4:51pm. They should then be able to work out that they would arrive in Manchester 9 minutes before 5pm.

Convert times to 24 hour clock
Hi
I am having trouble converting times, i can get it to work so far but all times with a zero at the end show as 3 digit, is there a way to convert it properly please?
thanks for any help
Re: Convert times to 24 hour clock
What method are you using to convert these times?
You’ve posted in the VBA section but the attachment has no VBA and no formulas so we have little idea of what you’ve tried so far.
Re: Convert times to 24 hour clock
Hi Sorry yes i noticed that but i dont know how to move it to the general excel or delete it to start again.
Re: Convert times to 24 hour clock
A moderator will have to move / delete it for you.
In the mean time, can you tell us what you’ve tried so far and explain your desired outcome?
Re: Convert times to 24 hour clock
Re: Convert times to 24 hour clock
it seems to work but it does not give you times in excel format.. it just gives you the number 19 if time is 7.00
you will never be able to calculate anything based on these times as 7.15 is not quarter past 7
however if you want a quick fix for looking like time just change your formula to
=(IF(a1=””,””,IF(a1 Attached Files

time conversion from 12 hr to 24 hour
I’m having an issue in converting 12 hour to 24 hour time (military time).
I’m using the Text Input file. The raw data is showing like these samples – 12:10P, 6:59P, 10:04A, 2:10P
What do i need to do so that the end result would look like this 12:10, 18:59, 10:04 and 14:10?
In your Text Input, use a format along the lines of hh:mma
Then pass it through a Select Values step to change the format to HH:mm
But. I would still ask. What’s the point? It’s just a format.
I was thinking that if I want the time written to Oracle database in the near future, I would need to learn how to convert the 12 hour value to military time? Or would the database accept values like this – 2:10P ?
As long as PDI understands it to be a date, it will pass it to Oracle in a way Oracle will understand.

Whether one uses the 12 hour system or the 24 hour system, here’s a handy tip for quick conversion.
Having grown up using a 12 hour clock and the Imperial measuring system, I’m always on the lookout for easy ways to convert one thing to another – Imperial to Metric and back again. Preferably without having to do much math.
The Alien Eyes blog has a great tip for converting time.
I cheerfully ignored the comments that implied everyone should have learned this from their (insert grade or level) math teacher, feel free to do the same.

Converting 24 hour time to 12 hour time and a REGEX_Replace question

I just wrote my first REGEX expression from scratch, well sort of, with help from all the documentation and posts and YouTube videos from @MarqueeCrew (the link to was great help) and the courage to try from @Joe_Mako but I’m still running into a bit of snag but hopefully I’ll sort it out eventually.
After searching the community I found posts regarding converting 12 hour time to 24 hour time but not the other way around. And after I used the 12 to 24 hour documentation to figure out the 24 to 12 path, I still had a client request to format the time a bit outside of normal parameters. they wanted it to be a.m. and p.m. super annoying but with Alteryx and REGEX problem solved. I don’t know if anyone else will end up needing something like this but I know I’ll forget and be searching for this in the future so this post is for me! The next step is to figure out how to make this all happen in one REGEX tool or formula tool.
First the conversion from 24 to 12 hour format was easily accomplished with the DateTime Tool and the Alteryx documentation on DateTime Functions when you hit the Specifiers drop down you get an explanation of all the options for date and time formatting in the DateTime Tool and you find the element that gives you the am or pm is the code %P for lower case am/pm and %p for uppercase, but you also have to swap out the usual HH for an %I (upper case i) or if you want to get rid of the leading 0 on the hours you can use %l (lower case L) which gets a little confusing because they look the same in the formula below but you can see in the tool a preview of the output.

I am trying to display times in Google Sheets without an AM/PM indicator, but with 12-hour time (not 24-hour “military-style” time). I do not need the AM/PM indicator as it is redundant in my situation.
I’m currently using a custom date and time format:
. which displays 2:15 PM as “2:15p”.
If I change this to:
. it displays 2:15 PM as “14:15”. However, I do not want 24-hour time.
Is there any way to leave off the AM/PM indicator while still displaying the hours in 12-hour time format?
I’d rather not do the formatting in a formula (converting the values to text) as my times are consumed by formulas in other cells.
6 Answers 6
It’s not possible without a formula. Separate time storing from time displaying by using one cell to store the time and another to display it in the desired format by using a formula like the following
Good question: I just looked expecting to find an option under Format > Number > More Formats > Custom Number Format but couldn’t see anything that would work.
If you do end up doing it with a formula, then the easiest approach may be to use helper columns, and something like =if(hour(E6) > 12, hour(E6)-12, hour(E6))
(Not the answer you want, I know, but I cannot see another, and couldn’t find one by experimenting either.)
This is a total kludge, but if you want to do it without an extra column in your table, you can edit the format ( Format > Number > More Formats > More Time and Date Formats ) and then just insert a ton of spaces after the minutes and use the column size to hide the AM/PM part.
E.g., (Hour 1)(Minutes 01)(AM/PM a) —–> (Hour 1)(Minutes 01) (AM/PM a)
Then, just hide the am/pm text with column size.
There’s a ton of reasons why this will eventually cause greater irritation than it is worth, but for something quick and dirty, I have found it to be convenient.
If you have been tired of the confusion that surrounds the 12-hour clock format, you are reading the right article at the right time. We are going to let you know more about the importance of using the 24-hour clock and how to convert military time to standard time. So read on to find out even more about this useful yet interesting topic.
Simpler Life
If you use a 24-hour clock format, you will be able to live a simpler life. This will allow you to avoid a lot of headaches in the future related to time. Your smartphone can be also a source of confusion when it comes to telling the time, but you should also take a close look at your alarm clock. You will be able to deal with different time zones quickly and easily if you use the famous 24-hour clock format. Stopping the madness that many times surrounds a 12-hour clock format is possible when you use the 24-hour clock format.
Europe and Army Time Converter
In Europe, the 24-hour clock format is the normal way of telling the time, but America uses a 12-hour clock format. Telling the time in the military format is quite simple. For instance, if you see something like 1500, you can say that it is 3:00 p.m. right away. This is simple arithmetic, which is truly useful in everyday life. In a 24-hour clock, the pm hours will have a sub-number or something like that. You need to bear this fact in mind so you can avoid tons of confusion over time.
Time Value
You need to deal with time values and not numbers in the 24-hour clock format. For instance, the number 1600 is not 1,600, as the former is just time value. Remember that you just need to add 12 to any pm hour out there. For instance, 4 pm will be 12+ 4 = 1600 hours. Easy, isn’t it? A little subtraction will allow you to convert from military time to civilian time. If 1500 is the time, 15 – 12 = 3 pm. With the 24-hour click format, you don’t have to use any kind of pm/am designation at all, which is pretty useful.
The 24-hour format is superior to the 12-hour one. For instance, if you tell me that an important party will happen in ten hours, I will just add 10 to my 24-hour clock. If my current time is 8:00 a.m., I will have 1800. This is simplicity at its peak, and you will love it. Remember that the military time does not use the colon that is currently used in the 12-hour clock format out there. You need to remember that important +/- 12-hour conversion. This will make your life easier than just memorizing the conversion from time to time.
As you can see, the 24-hour clock for is quite simple. Though you might not find the 24-hour clock format better than the 12-hour clock format, the former is quite simple and efficient. This will allow the 24-hour clock format to survive over time, and the military will be reaping the benefits of this system more and more in the future. So what are you waiting for? Try the 24-hour clock format right now and start out a journey to a simpler life.
Given a string in a 24 hour format the program outputs a 12 hour format. The rules are:
- The output format must be ‘hh:mm a.m.’ if it represents before midday and ‘hh:mm p.m.’ after midday
- When the hour is less than 10:00 you should not write a 0 before the hour, example: ‘9:05 a.m.’
12:30 → 12:30 p.m.
09:00 → 9:00 a.m.
23:15 → 11:15 p.m.

To help with readability, I’d just import datetime.datetime and then alias it, that way you aren’t typing datetime.datetime all over the place:
Next, if you are just unpacking the list returned from clamp_to_twelve , I would just return a tuple :
This saves you from having to construct the list, as well as the additional overhead of over-allocating memory to take into account the mutable list .
As a last optimization, you could refactor your if statements to not be nested. Because you are using if if rather than if elif , all of your statements are executed within the nested blocks:
The only issue being that the order is quite important, since time_dt > midday_dt and time_dt >= dt.strptime(’13:00′, ‘%H:%M’) are not mutually exclusive. However, you do get a slight time bump because of the separation of blocks of code:
Emphasis on slight. Depends on what you find more readable.

Because the value doesn’t match the format mask you’ve provided.
One uses am/pm the other uses 24 hour.

Why does the following query not work?
- Select To_date ( ’10:35 PM’ , ‘HH24:MI’ ) From DUAL
it gives the following error
date format picture ends before converting entire input string. ank youHH24:MI
That’s right. The 1st argument is in ‘HH:MI AM’ format, but you’re telling the function that it’s in ‘HH24:MI’ format.
but the following query works fine
- Select To_date ( ’10:35′ , ‘HH24:MI’ ) From DUAL
When the 1st argument really is in the format specifed by the 2nd, then you don’t get that error.
I need to convert the time format in the first query into HH24:MI in PLSQL, how can I do that?
Use TO_DATE to convert a string into a DATE, using the format of the string.
Use TO_CHAR to convert a DATE into a string, in any format you want.

I need help in writing a C++ program that converts 24-hour notation to 12-hour notation. (For example, it should convert 14:25 to 2:25 P.M. The input is given as two integers. There are three functions: one for input, one to do the conversion, and one for output. Record the A.M./P.M. information as a value of type char, ‘A’ for A.M. and ‘P’ for P.M. Thus, the function for doing the conversions will have a call-by-reference formal parameter of type char to record whether it is A.M. of P.M. ) Specifically, I need help iin defining the function : int convertTo12Hour(int hours, char& type)
The code I have so far is:
but i am stuck on the rest am i on the right track and where do i go from here ?

First do the math on paper & pencil. Once you get that right then coding it will be simple.
If the hours is greater than 12 just subtract 12 and the A.M./P.M. flag will be ‘P’. Otherwise if the hours is less than 12 the flag will be ‘A’ …
put it in the convert function that you started (see the last line that you posted) int convertTo12Hour(int hours, char& type);
Some of the solutions posted here are not quite correct. Zero in 24 hour time is 12:00 AM. Try this:
// using the time from ^ above, convert
// secs to HH:MM:SS format using division
// and modulus
Or, just simply call localtime() or gmtime(), which will put it in a structure for you.
its a perfect program of time conversion
Well, it’s not horrible, but I wouldn’t use the word “perfect” as a descriptor. You could start by learning to format your code in a sane manner.

(For 12-hour time notation, your program must display AM or PM.)

Method definitions need to go outside of main(). And the ; goes after the function not before it. Right now the commands that should be in these methods are executed as part of main.
Main should run a menu that prompts the user for what they would like to do, then runs the appropriate method. The exact menu of choices isn’t clear from this problem declaration – I would do something like:
Choose an option:
(1) Enter time in 12-hours notation
(2) Enter time in 24-hours notation
(3) Display time in 12-hours notation
(4) Display time in 24-hours notation
Both cout commands are executed because “if(AMAM = ‘A’)” will always return true. You need to use ==.
You haven’t written a 24-hours-notation output, you’ve just labeled PM times as 24-hour.
An input function either returns the user input (perhaps as an array), or modifies variables that were passed by reference.
Although the program runs as you’ve written it, you really should make AMPM a char instead of an int. (you don’t need to define chars A and P. ‘A’ and ‘P’ are already chars)
When you get all that working, tackle the problem that midnight is 12 AM.
I have a column’StartTime’ which holds datatype ‘Timestamp.’ It has values like 2014-05-08T08:00:00, 2014-05-09T21:59:29, 2014-05-09T16:00:00. I need to display these as 08:00AM, 09:59PM, 04:00PM respectively.
May I get some input on this as i got stuck from last 2 days in this issue? Plz help me if anybody has any info abt it..
Thanks a ton in advance..

Thanks for your rply.
‘StartTime’ is a dynamic column i.e. it can contain any other values too. I mention 3 values just for example. Its working for these value but not if the column is dynamic. Please help..

What is the type, you defined for STARTTIME field on RTF template?
What you are getting, if you use above syntax.

Replace this value ‘2014-05-05T16:00:00’ with your field name (No quotes).
And to get only time, use this

Basically it has been a while since I posted.
Just need to seek for some assistance as this is a task for C programming in linux – any hint, few sentences or cheat sheet would be most welcome to assist in this small task I am having difficulties with. here is the scope of it in a quote box.
Design and implement an algorithm that will prompt for and receive the time expressed in 2400 format, (e.g 2305 hours), convert it to 12-hour format (e.g 11:05p.m) and display the new time to the screen. Your program is to repeat the processing until a sentinel time of 9999 is entered.
I attempted this in code, at some point – it seems that I am stuck
Few things I am attempting is to change 2400 to 1200 hours, which is I am not sure and the other is the ‘:’ printed out in the output. Does anyone know how?
(pssttt. what about the sentinel execution? Does this involve with a while loop or something relevant?)
