The Nest Secure has three different alarm settings: Off, Home, and Away. Here’s how to customize some of these settings to fit your needs.
Here’s how each alarm level perfroms by default:
- Off: Only doors/windows opening and closing are detected and logged, but the alarm doesn’t sound at all and no alerts are sent.
- Home and Guarding: Only doors/windows opening and closing are detected and logged, but the alarm does sound and you do receive alerts.
- Away and Guarding: Any motion, as well as doors/windows opening and closing are detected and logged. The alarm sounds, and alerts are sent.
You can change these parameters slightly. Start by opening the Nest app on your phone and tapping the “Settings” button (the gear icon) in the top right corner of the screen.
Tap the “Security” option at the bottom of the list.
On the “Security” page, tap the “Security Levels” setting.
From here, there are a few things you can change around. We’ll start by tapping the “Quiet Open” setting.
This is a feature that lets open a door or window without the alarm going off when the system is set to Home and Guarding. You simply press the button on the Nest Detect sensor and you’ll have 10 seconds to open the door or window without the alarm going off.
After tapping the “Quiet Open” setting, that section expands, and you can hit the toggle switch to turn it on or off.
After that, tap the “Motion Detection” setting.
This setting lets you enable or disable all motion detection when the system is set to Away and Guarding.
Disabling this setting might be a good idea if you have cats or other animals that jump around on furniture and are likely set off the alarm. Keep in mind, though, that disabling this will completely turn off motion detection on all security levels.
Lastly, tap the “Reduced Motion Sensitivity” setting.
If you just have a small dog that doesn’t cause a lot of trouble and wouldn’t move around much, you can instead enable this setting to prevent false alarms by tapping on the toggle switch to turn it on or off.
Keep in mind that if you enable this setting, motion detection is still enabled for anything larger than a small dog, and it’s probably a good idea to still be cautious about any false alarms.
Nest Secure has three different alarm settings: Off, Home, and Away. Here’s how to customize some of these settings to suit your needs.
Here’s how each alarm level perfroms by default:
- Disabled: Only doors / windows opening and closing are detected and recorded, but the alarm does not ring at all and no alarms are heard. is sent.
- Reception and guarding: Only the doors / windows opening and closing are detected and logged, but the alarm issues and you receive alerts.
- Away and Guarding: All movement, as well as the opening and closing of doors / windows are detected and recorded. The alarm sounds and alerts are sent.
You can change these settings slightly. Start by opening the Nest app on your phone and tap the “Settings” button (the gear icon) in the upper right corner of the screen.
Tap the “Security” option at the bottom of the list.
On the “Security” page, touch the “Security Levels” parameter.
From there, there are a few things you can change. We will start by pressing the “Quiet Open” parameter.
This function allows you to open a door or window without the alarm being triggered when the system is set to Home and Monitoring. You simply press the Nest Detect button and you will have 10 seconds to open the door or window without the alarm going off.
After pressing the “Quiet Open” setting, this section expands and you can press the toggle switch to turn it on or off.
Then press the “Motion Detection” parameter.
This setting allows you to enable or disable any motion detection when the system is set to Away and Protection.
Disabling this setting can be a good idea if you have cats or other animals jumping on the furniture and probably triggering the alarm. Keep in mind, however, that disabling this feature will completely disable motion detection at all security levels.
Finally, press the “Reduced Motion Sensitivity” parameter.
If you just have a small dog that does not cause a lot of problems and does not move much, you can instead enable this setting to avoid false alarms by pressing the rocker switch to turn it on or off. l & # 39; extinguished.
Keep in mind that if you enable this setting, motion detection is always enabled for any object larger than a small dog, and it is probably advisable to remain cautious with false alarms.
Depending on how you have Nest’s Home/Away Assist feature set up, you might be receiving notifications to set you alarm even if you’re still home. Here’s how to fix it.
You can use the Home/Away Assist feature with any of Nest’s products, and it gives these devices the power to automatically set to their away modes when it detects that you’re not home.
The problem, though, is that the Nest app can sometimes thinks you’re “Away” when you haven’t left the house. This is because Home/Away Assist is using the motion sensors of the Nest Secure system as the only way to determine whether or not we’re home. So if you get this kind of notification when you’re still home, it’s because your Nest Secure hasn’t detected any motion for a particular amount of time—not so great if you’re chilling in front of the TV, reading, or just sitting at your computer.
You can change this behavior by adding your phone’s location as a way for Nest to tell whether your home or away. And, of course, you could just turn off Home/Away Assist altogether, and manually arm your Nest Secure system (or manually set the Nest app to “Home” or “Away”). Let’s take a look in the Nest app and customize these settings.
Start off by tapping the Settings button (the gear icon) in the top right corner of the main screen.
On the “Home” page, select the “Home/Away Assist” setting.
Next, tap the “What Decides If You’re Home” setting.
As you can see, our example phone’s location is not being used to determine whether “Home” or “Away” gets enabled. To change this, tap the “Use Phone Location” option.
And then turn on the toggle switch that appears. The Nest app will now switch to “Home” or “Away” status based on your phone’s GPS location.
You can also tap each individual sensor listed for your Nest Secure system and either include or exclude it from Home/Away Assist. If you disable everything, you’ll need to manually switch to “Home” or “Away” in the Nest app to set your status.
When you’ve set all that up, go back and tap the “Security” setting under the “When You Are Away” section of the main “Home/Away Assist” page.
The toggle switch at the top lets you determine whether or not the Nest app automatically arms or disarms your Nest Secure system when you set your status “Away” or “Home.”
Below that, you can choose the security level to associate with the “Home” and “Away” statuses.
Finally, the “Remind Me” lets your Nest send you a notification reminding you to arm your Nest Secure system when the Nest app detects that you’re not at home. This is the notification pictured at the very top of the article, only this time those notifications will work properly, since we’ve fixed the Home/Away Assist issue.
With a Nest Tag, it’s really easy to manually arm and disarm your Nest Secure system, so disabling Home/Away Assist entirely isn’t a bad idea. However, if you are a big fan of complete automation, these are the settings you’ll want to customize and mess around with.
Nest Secure ima tri različite postavke alarma: Off, Home i Away.
Nest Secure ima tri različne nastavitve alarma: Off, Home in Away.
Zvok alarma in opozorila.
Nato tapnite nastavitev »Motion Detection«.
It first arrived in 2017 with the Nest Guard base, Nest Detect sensor for doors and windows, and Nest Tag fob.
Google has discontinued its Nest Secure Alarm System, though it will continue to support it for existing customers.
As Android Police first reported, the bundle’s listing on the Google Store now says “No longer available.” It first arrived in 2017 and included several products: an “all-in-one security base” called Nest Guard with an alarm, keypad, and motion sensor; a separate sensor called Nest Detect that could be placed on a window or door to keep tabs on whether it’s open or closed, along with the motion in a room; and Nest Tag, a fob that attached to your keychain, letting you arm and disarm the alarm system without a passcode.
In PCMag’s review, we concluded that Nest Secure was “a good, albeit pricey, choice for homeowners who have already invested in the Nest ecosystem with devices like the Learning Thermostat, Protect smoke alarm, and one or more Nest Cams.” The product received a 3.5 rating, getting dinged on price ($399), the lack of support for Amazon Alexa and IFTTT, and the inability to trigger other devices.
Last year, Nest Secure gained access to Google Assistant, but Assistant requires a microphone to work, and Google never disclosed that Nest Secure had one built-in to the Nest Guard.
Other Google home security products, including the Nest Yale Lock, the Nest Hello Doorbell, and Nest Indoor and Outdoor security cameras, are still available for purchase.

A big update is rolling out to Nest Hubs and third-party Google Assistant smart displays with lots of cool new features, many of which have been promised or teased/leaked for several months. The changes first started showing up several weeks ago, but are now rolling out to a wider audience. You can now (well, if the features have reached your unit) use your display as a sunrise alarm, put the Google weather frog as a background, leave sticky notes for your family to read, and more.
Sunrise alarm and new alarm UI
A new interface for setting up alarms has made its way onto smart displays. Instead of just asking Google to create an alarm, you can now customize everything about it on the screen, from the time it rings, to the tone it plays, days it repeats, snooze duration, and whether your morning routine should start after it’s over.
Additionally, there’s a special new sunrise setting that lets your display slowly come alive in the morning to mimic the sun. You can choose how long the effect lasts, the smart lights that should follow suit and slowly brighten up along with the display, and whether or not a small tone should play before it starts.
The video below shows all these new settings when creating alarms.
Google weather frog
Until now, you could choose between three different ambient backgrounds for your display: Google Photos, Google’s curated art pieces, and different fullscreen clock designs. There’s a fourth option now: the Google weather frog that we’ve all grown fond of on our phones.
A new card on your homescreen should tell you about it, but you can also say, “Hey Google, set up my photo frame,” or swipe up from the bottom of the screen and go to Settings > Photo frame. The weather frog should be the fourth option there.
Instead of random photos or art pics, you’ll now see a fullscreen graphic with the weather frog chilling or freezing or having random fun across lush green hills and sandy beaches. It changes with the time of the day, so you’ll get a night scene after sunset and a brighter one during the day. The time and weather for the next two days are displayed at the bottom left too. This will be your ambient display, and any notes, reminders, calendar events, or other notifications will pop up on the right.
Family tab and sticky notes
Google has been teasing sticky notes on smart displays for a little over a year. The feature rolled out in limited capacity to some users, but remained unavailable to most. Google reiterated its promise again last November, announcing it as part of a new Family tab. Now both of these have started showing up on some units.
On my Lenovo Smart Display, the new Family tab is live. It includes quick access to the Family Bells, family sticky notes, Life360 tracking, and some fun questions and activities for kids. Household contacts, even though they’re a family-oriented feature, remain under the Communicate tab.
To add a new sticky note, you can tap that yellow card, but you can also trigger it by saying, “Hey Google, add a family note,” from any screen or even when the display is in ambient mode. Make sure you mention family there, otherwise Google will create a regular note that you’ll find in your connected note and list service (like Keep or Any.do).
The sticky notes appear on the ambient display and the main home screen for everyone to see, so no family member should miss them. But you might want to avoid sharing any secret messages there if you have guests over. You can also access all your family notes and delete the ones you’re done with.
I first spotted these changes three weeks ago on my Lenovo Smart Display, without running any special preview firmware. My unit was on software version 33.27.44.346118233 with Cast firmware version 1.52.239754. Other people I checked with didn’t see most of the new features (they only had the new alarm interface).
Now, it seems that the changes are rolling out widely to Nest Hub owners — and possibly other smart displays — with Cast firmware 1.52, as 9to5Google reports. No preview participation is necessary, the firmware is rolling out to hubs on the stable release channel.
Keep in mind that smart displays don’t install updates until night-time or if they’re rebooted, so to check if there’s any new version available for your unit and pending installation, you should unplug and re-plug your device. You should get some of these options then, otherwise patience is your friend.
Rolling out widely
This post has been updated to indicate that these features are rolling out to most units with Cast firmware 1.52.
A lot of things get better over time. Leather jackets, your kids piano playing, pretty much all technology. Sadly, that hasn’t applied to smoke alarms. The alarm that’s been on your ceiling for 10 years hasn’t gotten better.
But Nest Protect can. Unlike other alarms, it updates automatically, getting improved software and new features.
Over the next two weeks, all Wi-Fi connected Nest Protect smoke and CO alarms will get new 2.0 software that cuts down on false alarms from steam, gives you insights into your home and helps you stay safe. Here’s what you’ll get with this update:
Steam Check: Steam sets off most smoke alarms, regardless of what kind of sensor they use. It’s completely counter-intuitive, but water particles and smoke particles don’t look very different to smoke alarms. Now, Nest Protect will know better.
It will use its built-in humidity sensor and new algorithms to understand the difference between steam and smoke. Even with a very conservative approach – Nest Protect has to be 100% sure there’s no fire – Steam Check cuts down nuisance alarms from steam by more than half. That’s based on data from real homes, not lab testing.
Want to know more about how Steam Check algorithm works? We’ve written a white paper.
Safety History: Check the Nest app to see what caused Heads-Up or Emergency Alarms over the last 10 days. Keep track of where and when they happened, so you can figure out how to avoid setting off alarms.
What To Do 2.0: Having an escape plan in an emergency can make all the difference. What To Do helps you and your family plan and practice how to get out of the house safely in both fire and CO emergencies. And What To Do helps you customize the notification you get on your phone when there’s an emergency alarm to include the number of an emergency contact, like a family member, neighbor, or the local fire department.
Carbon Monoxide levels: When Nest Protect sounds the alarm for CO, you’ll see on the Nest app how much CO triggered the alarm and how long levels stay that high. Afterwards, you can check Messages or Safety History to see the highest levels of CO reached. That can help you understand health risks and find and stop leaks in the future. Keep in mind – this info is meant to be helpful after an alarm. You should always evacuate your home and call 911 when there’s a CO emergency. Not sure how you’re affected by carbon monoxide? Read our blog or white paper.
New Pathlight controls: Pathlight is one of Nest Protect’s most popular features because it does something wonderfully simple: light your way in the dark. Now you can adjust its brightness from the app and, if you have a wired Nest Protect, you can turn Pathlight into a comforting nightlight for your kids by setting it to Always On. Learn more>
Hidden Networks: Some of our customers like to keep their Wi-Fi hidden from others. With this new update, Nest Protect will now be able to connect to your super secret network. Learn more>
If you already own a Nest Protect, be sure to download the new Nest app so you can check out all these new features. It’s available for both iOS and Android.
We’re constantly working on making Nest Protect better by improving existing features and creating new ones. At its core, Nest Protect: Smoke + CO is there to keep you safe and to create a smoke and CO alarm you’ll love. Hopefully you’ll love it a little bit more today.
