VLC is a feature rich media player. It’s the go-to app when you need to play an MKV file that most media players do not support. Of course, to call VLC just a media player is unfair; it has features most media apps don’t have including a screencast feature and a live streaming feature. You’d have to use several different apps to get all the features that VLC has in one app. It also has excellent keyboard shortcut support and you can fully customize the keyboard shortcuts. You can also disable a keyboard shortcut in VLC player if it’s clashing with another app. Here’s how.
This works in the latest, stable version of VLC player. Older versions did not have this option so if doesn’t work for you, make sure you have the latest version of VLC installed.
Disable Keyboard Shortcut
Open VLC player and from the menu bar, go to Tools>Preferences. Alternatively, just tap the Ctrl+P shortcut key.
On the preferences screen, go to the Hotkeys tab. Here you will see a complete list of all keyboard shortcuts. You can edit them if you like but if you only want to disable a keyboard shortcut, double-click it. A pop-up will appear with an option to ‘Unset’ the shortcut. Click it to deactivate the keyboard shortcut.
Once you do this, the shortcut field will be erased. There’s no way to automatically reset the keyboard shortcut to its default value so you will have to remember what the shortcut was when you want to enable it again.
Enable Keyboard Shortcut
To enable a keyboard shortcut after you’ve disabled/unset it, open VLC’s preferences. Go to the Hotkeys tab and in the list of shortcuts, double-click the one you want to enable again. When the dialog box opens, type the shortcut you want to set.
Keyboard shortcuts, while useful can end up interfering with other apps. This mostly happens when a shortcut combination is one that’s used very commonly. For example, lots of apps including cloud drive apps will try to bind the Print Screen key to a screenshot function. If you have too many apps trying to take control of this particular key, you will have to choose one over the other.
A shortcut clash often occurs when the keyboard shortcut is supposed to be universal. Apps that run in the system tray might have a universal feature like this and they’re the type to cause a clash. If you cannot afford to disable the app with its universal keyboard shortcut, this is one way to resolve the clash.

Windows 10 offers a great experience to its users. You can customize it and make changes so that you can completely enjoy the day to day usage. You can easily organize your PC, adjust the settings, pin the apps to the taskbar, and many other things. Of course, some options are turned on by default, but you can dive into settings and disable the ones you want. If you don’t want Autocorrect enabled (it is turned on by default), you can make changes and disable it with ease. That’s exactly what we are going to show you here. Let’s see how to turn off Autocorrect in Windows 10.
How to turn off Autocorrect in Windows 10
If you just started using Windows 10 without any previous experience with this OS, you might need a helping hand at the beginning and that’s why we are here.

- Click on the Start button located in the bottom-left corner of the screen
- Now click on the gear icon to access the Settings menu
- In Settings, click Devices
- Next, click Typing
- At the top of the screen, you will see the Spelling section and the option “Autocorrect misspelling words”
- As you can see, the option is turned on by default
- To turn it off, just click on the switch below the option
- You can also choose whether you want misspelled words to be highlighted by clicking on the switch below that option
That is all you need to do. Autocorrect is now turned off. If you wish to enable it again, go back to Settings > Devices > Typing and make the required changes.
Windows 10 is the new operating system from Microsoft that brings Cortana to the desktop, universal apps, and a super easy to use Settings app to find and configure different options in the operating system, and many other features. Like in Windows 8.x, the new version of the operating system includes an automatic spell checker that will autocorrect and highlight misspelled words in apps designed to take advantage of the functionality.
You will find such feature inside the Microsoft Edge web browser and Internet Explorer, Facebook, Readit, Xbox app, and on countless of other apps. Autocorrect and highlighted misspelled words are excellent productivity tools inside Windows 10, but there could be times when you will not require assistant correct your grammar.
Fortunately, Windows 10 comes with the necessary settings to individually enable or disable the spelling options. If you want to change the grammar settings follow these super easy steps:
- Use the Windows + I keyboard shortcut to open the Settings app
- Navigate to Devices and go to Typing
- Under Spelling, switch the Autocorrect misspelled words and Highlight misspelled words to the Off position.
Quick Note: If you’re disabling the spelling options while the apps are still running, you’ll need to restart the app you want to use without the autocorrect in order the changes to take effect.
That’s all you have to do to disable the spell checker in Windows 10. You can always enable the settings back by coming back to the Typing Settings section.
It’s worth pointing out that surprisingly, even though the spell checker is a global feature, many apps work independently. For example, if you want to disable spell checking on the new Windows 10 Mail app, you’ll need to open Mail, click on New Mail, navigate to Options, and change the Spelling options. OneNote also doesn’t respond to the Windows 10 Spelling feature. However, OneNote doesn’t even have options to control spelling.
Disabling spelling feature in Office
The suite of Office apps, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the others, also have an independent spell checker, which you can easily disable. Here is how to do it:
- Going to File > Options.
- Then go to Proofing and under When correcting spelling and grammar in Word (or from another Office app), make sure you uncheck Check spelling as you type and Check grammar with spelling. And click the AutoCorrect options button to control how Office apps, in this case, Word, corrects and formats your content.
Editing your custom dictionary in Windows 10
If you happen to want to disable spell checker in Windows 10 because, by mistake, you added some misspelled words to your personal dictionary, you can do that too. There are two ways to remove added words to the dictionary.
Method one
- Open the run command and type the following command with your account name: **C:\Users\yourAccountName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Spelling**
- Go inside the language folder – in my case es-US.
- Open the default.dic file with Notepad. Now remove the misspelled words and save the file.
Method two
- Open Word and go to File > Proofing and click the Custom Dictionary button.
- Select RoamingCustom.dic from the list and click Edit Word List
- Then add or remove the words you want and click OK
- Click OK, OK again, and close Word.
That’s all there is to it!

In Windows 10, there’s the option to turn off autocorrection of spelling errors in “Settings – Devices – Input”. In Windows 10 Mail, you can also disable the highlighting and autocorrection of spelling errors when writing an e-mail in the options menu. Still, the autocorrection will be “correcting” errors on its own, which is even more annoying when you’re writing in a language Win10 doesn’t understand.
I presume that the spell check is somehow integrated into the keyboard language, but only active within some applications (maybe those that don’t appropriately control it). I have several different languages installed, with German being the main one, but no English keyboard installed, as it is simply not neccessary when using the german one (no additional keys/letters in English, and I prefer the language list not to get too long). Now when writing a mail in English, it autocorrects everything german-style (in Mail). Within the keyboard settings (control panel – time, language and region – language – keyboard=>options) I have access to some details regarding the spell checking (differently for different keyboard languages), but no option whatsoever to just turn it off! Regardless of me using a german layout for english input, there should be an option for anyone not wanting a spell check to turn it off, shouldn’t it?
Does anybody have a clue whether there is another hidden option for spelling checks which could really turn this thing off?

Like many other operating systems, Windows 10 also provides you with the facility of spell checking and auto-correcting the misspelled words. It is indeed a very useful feature as it enables you to avoid spelling mistakes up to a great extent. However, sometimes it gets very annoying. For example, it is a very common practice to use Roman Urdu in messages, chats and informal emails these days. In all such cases, auto-correct feature creates hindrance in your work and slows down your typing speed, as you need to re-correct the auto-corrected words according to your requirements. In this article, we will explain to you a method through which you can disable the auto-correct feature in Windows 10.
Disabling Auto-Correction in Windows 10
