Citrate helps prevent kidney stone formation by binding with calcium in urine. This inhibits the growth of calcium crystals, which can lead to kidney stones.

In addition, drinking a cup of fresh juice per day can contribute to your daily recommended fluid intake.

Seaweed

Brown seaweed has been studied for its beneficial effects on the pancreas, kidneys, and liver. In a 2014 animal trial , rats fed edible seaweed for a period of 22 days showed a reduction in both kidney and liver damage from diabetes.

Try a packet of dried, seasoned seaweed the next time you’re craving a crunchy snack.

Calcium-rich foods

Many people believe that avoiding calcium can help to prevent kidney stones. In fact, the opposite is true.

Too much urinary oxalate can lead to kidney stones. Calcium is needed to bind with oxalate to reduce the absorption and excretion of this substance.

You can meet the recommended daily intake of 1.2 grams of calcium by consuming high-calcium foods, such as soy or almond milk, tofu, and fortified cereals.

Although you may already know about baking soda’s incredible uses, you’ve probably never heard of this one before: Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) can actually help your kidneys heal and function properly.

Your endocrine system produces hormones and enzymes to help breakdown food into nutrients your body can absorb. It also signals your pancreas and kidneys to produce sodium bicarbonate, which plays a role in neutralizing acidity.

The pancreas is primarily responsible for the production of enzymes and bicarbonate necessary to neutralize acids produced during the normal digestion of food. This bicarbonate is also produced by the kidneys to protect themselves from acid damage.

Kidneys monitor and control the acidity or “acid-base” (pH) balance of the blood. Excess acid, or acidosis, causes inflammation and is considered to contribute to many diseases and to the aging process.

Therefore, if the blood is too acidic, the kidney makes bicarbonate to restore the bloods pH balance. If the blood is too alkaline, then the kidney excretes bicarbonate into the urine to restore the balance. via DrSircus

Individuals suffering from kidney failure have to go through dialysis, a process by which the blood is filtered outside the body. This helps restore healthy blood ph levels, remove excess fluid and prevent toxic overload.

What Studies Are Saying

The US National Health Institute has conducted experiments that show that kidney dialysis using bicarbonate agents have more restorative properties than standard dialysis treatments.

In addition, British scientists at the Royal Hospital in London conducted a study on the relationship between bicarbonate and slowing the progression of kidney disease.

Out of 134 test patients with advanced kidney disease and metabolic acidosis, a randomly selected small group was given a tablet daily, made of a small amount of sodium bicarbonate for a year. The kidney function of these patients declined at a rate that’s expected with normal aging and were less likely to require dialysis. This group had a 2/3 slower decline of health than the untreated group. Professor Magdi Yaqoob, lead researcher of the British study, explained in a press release:

“It’s amazing. This is the first randomized controlled study of its kind. A simple remedy like sodium bicarbonate, when used appropriately, can be very effective.”

“This study shows baking soda can be useful for people with kidney failure. That is, as long as the dose is regulated and under supervision…What happens is the inflammation of kidney is prevented by baking soda because a chemical reaction takes place limiting ammonia production in the kidney.”

Dr. SK Hariachar, a nephrologist who oversees the Renal Hypertension Unit in Tampa Florida stated, upon seeing the research on bicarbonate and kidney disease:

“I am glad to see confirmation of what we have known for so long. I have been treating my patients with bicarbonate for many years in attempts to delay the need for dialysis, and now we finally have a legitimate study to back us up. Not only that, we have the added information that some people already on dialysis can reverse their condition with the use of sodium bicarbonate.”

How To Take Sodium Bicarbonate (SB):

This health protocol is mostly for those in danger of developing kidney disease.

To avoid injury do not take sodium bicarbonate until the powder is completely dissolved and it is very important not to take baking soda when overly full from food or drink.

Day 1

Start with 1/2 tsp of SB sublingual (dissolved under your tongue).

Day 2-5

Take 1/2 tsp of SB and 1/2 tsp of sodium chloride (cooking salt) and mix it in 1.5 liters of drinking water. Take daily for 2-3 days.

Day 5+

Reduce your daily dosage to 1/4 tsp baking soda and 1/3 tsp salt dissolved in drinking water. It you begin to feel sick or nauseous, only take the SB sublingually.

As with any other health decision, always talk to your doctor before beginning any sodium bicarbonate treatment.

Here are several science-supported methods for caring for your kidneys and reducing your risk of kidney disease:  

  • Avoid smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol and caffeine.
  • Maintain normal blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
  • Keep your cholesterol in check.
  • Drink enough water and other fluids.
  • Stay at a healthy weight.

Although there’s no evidence that a kidney flush can help prevent kidney stones, you may reduce your risk by getting enough fluids and cutting back on sodium.  

People with a history of kidney stones may also want to avoid foods rich in oxalates, such as chocolate, okra, sweet potatoes, sesame seeds, greens, nuts, and spinach. Foods rich in purine content such as red meat should be moderated to reduce uric acid kidney stone risk.

Many types of kidney stones benefit from the addition of citrus to the diet or to water. There is some evidence suggesting that the herb Phyllanthus may help prevent the formation of kidney stones.

Despite claims to the contrary, research shows that a high intake of calcium through foods may decrease the risk of kidney stones, according to the National Kidney Foundation.   However, taking calcium in supplement form may increase your risk.

Spring cleansing means detoxifying your body, says Linda Page, ND, PhD, a naturopathic doctor, lecturer, and author of the book Detoxification.

It’s a way to recharge, rejuvenate, and renew, says Page. “Anybody can benefit from a cleansing. The body is coming out of what might be called hibernation. It’s a way you can jump-start your body for a more active life, a healthier life.”

There’s no vacuum or mop needed for this little “housekeeping” ritual. It means drinking juice — a whole lot of juice and little else — which pushes everything thing else out of your system, Page tells WebMD. You get the picture. You’re clearing out all the tubes and pipes, as they say.

But to purists like Chris Strychacz, PhD, a research psychologist at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, Calif., fasting means “water only,” he tells WebMD. He’s been fasting for at least 25 years now, an annual weeklong ritual every spring.

“There’s a big difference between fasting and dieting [as Page advocates],” Strychacz says. The effects on the body are quit different, he says.

Strychacz vividly remembers his first fast — 17 days long. “It was extraordinary, a mystical experience. I felt like I’d figured out why Jesus and Plato and Socrates and Gandhi did it — the clarity of thought, the peacefulness.”

Fasting indeed has a long-standing spiritual tradition. “Almost every religion has some type of fasting ritual — Lent, Ramadan, Yom Kippur . the Hindus and Buddhists fast, too,” says James Dillard, MD, assistant clinical professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He’s author of Alternative Medicinefor Dummies.

“There’s definitely a spiritual factor,” Dillard tells WebMD. But he’s among the skeptics. “Whether [fasting diets] have any physiological benefit, I’m not so sure.”

A study of anthropology gives plenty of evidence, Page says. In Chinese medicine, fasting is part of preventive health care. For many ancient cultures, fasting helped people “lighten up” after a long winter, shed the extra winter fat layer that provided warmth.

While a “water only” fast is pretty straightforward, Page’s cleansing is a bit more involved.

The diet starts on Friday night with a green salad, but Saturday’s menu shows you what’s really in store: Breakfast starts with plenty of vitamin C, then take your choice of fruit juices. “Because of its high water content, fruit will flush you through much quicker,” she says. “Green things give energy, but sugars will wash the system easier.”

“You’re going to be drinking something every 90 minutes to two hours, so you won’t feel deprived or hungry,” Page tells WebMD. “As your body gets lighter and lighter through the weekend, you can feel what’s going on. You’re getting rid of toxins accumulated during the winter. Your body is starting to release fat, those extra pounds.”

Dinner? That’s miso soup with some chopped sea vegetables (like the Japanese nori, used to make sushi) snipped over top. Or you might choose a cup of brown rice with a few chopped vegetables mixed in. “Brown rice gives your body plenty of B vitamins, which is a stress reducer. It’s very high fiber, will fill you up, will help you sleep, and will flush you out in the morning.”

She also advocates “cleansing boosters,” including herbal laxatives, colonics, probiotics (that replenish healthy bacteria), and antioxidants. Relaxation techniques — massage therapy, sauna, aromatherapy baths, deep breathing exercises, walking — help round-out the cleanse.

In evaluating Page’s detox diet, Dillard says, “Certainly, the human body carries huge loads of petrochemicals. We know people usually die with the full burden of PCBs they’ve ever been exposed to — from fish, animals — stuck in their liver. DDT sticks around, too.”

But can fasting remove these? “Theoretically, yes,” he says. “When fat is mobilized, anything that is fat-soluble should be mobilized, too — should, that is,” Dillard tells WebMD.

Although there are no studies of juice fasts/diets, water fasting does have some scientific evidence behind it — “but very scant,” admits Strychacz.

In the book Triumph Over Disease, Jack Goldstein, DPM, outlines his true story in overcoming ulcerative colitis by sticking to strict water fasting and a vegetarian diet. Goldstein is one of very few people who has tested his own tongue scrapings, urine, feces, even perspiration during a water fast, Strychacz says. “He found that the contents [during a fast] are different than normal — that toxins like DDT do get removed.”

Strychacz would like to conduct a study of fasting’s effects on atherosclerosis. “Look at Dean Ornish’s low-fat diet. He claims not only to arrest but actually reverse atherosclerosis. That’s huge. I would argue that if a low-fat diet will reverse it, then what about a no-fat diet?”

Some still consider fasting — in any form — to be “out there.” “When I review diets that are not based on science, the question I ask myself is: Would I feed them to my family? In this case, the answer is a clear no,” says Susan Roberts, PhD, chief of the Energy Metabolism Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging and a professor of nutrition at Tufts University in Boston.

But the psychological or spiritual effect can’t be discounted, says Dillard. “People love the idea of cleansing, of purification rituals, going to the Ganges, to the spa. It has powerful psychological, religious, spiritual meaning. That has its own positive effect on health. But we need to separate that from saying this is science or good medicine.”

Just don’t look at water fasts or juice diets as a weight-loss solution. As with the Atkins diet, restricting carbohydrates causes you to lose weight — but you’ll gain it all back, says Dillard. “You’re losing water in your system.”

Juice diets do prevent your body from going into a state called ketosis, he says. Ketosis means your body has no carbohydrates to burn for energy, so it has to burn stored fat or whatever else is available, he tells WebMD. “You feel bad, even smell bad. That’s what makes you feel like hell during a [water-only] fast. But is that because the toxins are coming out? No! You’re going into ketosis. It’s known physiology.”

“There’s nothing wrong with going on a juice fast for a few days,” he says. “But it’s not a great way to lose weight, because you’ll gain it all back — you yo-yo. It’s just like the Atkins diet. The weight you lose is water weight.”

Eating less — that’s definitely known to extend life, Dillard says. “The only reliable way to extend the lifespan of a mammal is under-nutrition without malnutrition. Studies show that if you cut back on 60% of the calories mice eat, they will live almost twice as long with much fewer tumors.”

“The old-fashioned way of eating the right foods, getting exercise, clean living, keeping a positive mental attitude — that’s what works,” he says.

The uva ursi is an evergreen shrub popularly eaten amongst bears, hence the name. The leaves are the potent portion of the herb, however, consultation with your physician is necessary prior to use to prevent toxicity. The dried herb is available as capsules or tea leaves for system cleansing. Do not exceed 4 g per day of bearberry and take no longer than five days at a time.

Drink water daily. Water is the most accessible urinary system cleanser and serves to maintain total body hydration. In the event of a kidney or bladder infection, drink two to four quarts, or 64 to 128 oz., of water daily, to flush your urinary system of excess proteins in the urine 1. Avoid use of caffeine and alcohol, which irritate the bladder.

How to Ease the Discomfort of a Bladder Infection

Go to the doctor and obtain an antibiotic. Antibiotics for urinary cleansing are appropriate for women with frequent urinary infection sensitivities 1. According to MedlinePlus, taking a single daily dose antibiotic prevents infections in women with recurrence of bacterial infections in the urinary system 1. Antibiotics are prescribed by a physician and use is subject to physician determination of need.

Use the bathroom regularly. Avoid holding your urine as this can increase bacteria accumulation in your bladder. Urinate before and after sexual activity to cleanse your urethra of bacteria. The problem is that the average human ureter has an outer diameter of about 3-4mm (inner diameter of about 2-3mm) and a length of about 10-12 inches. Stone rocks can vary in size. But just over 2mm, you feel it.

Now the disease is not as severe as when the kidney stone had launched from the rock. But be clear. It still hurts a lot. The pain will only come when the kidneys move. And pain is different from feeling.

In the first phase, the disease is INTENSIVE, and the atomic bombs seem to explode. Pain in the second stage is more of a luminous sensation since the kidneys are in tears when they fall into the bladder.

You may also feel pressure near the area where the kidneys can stop at this point. It is not entirely uncomfortable.

STAGE THREE

Once in the bladder, things change radically when it comes to pain. The pain went away. But what you will hear is HIGH PRESSURE. And your body will make you feel like you have to urinate every 5 minutes. But it makes sense, the body is smart enough and knows that there is a foreign body somewhere in its urinary tract and wants it to go away.

How To Make A Kidney-Cleansing Vegetable Broth

Use A Crock Pot

To make this broth I use a crock pot (slow cooker) as it is not only easy and economical, it also retains all the nutrients and flavors from the vegetables. If you don’t have a crock pot, you may also cook over the stove. The method will be very similar to when cooking using a slow cooker.

Many people ask me if nutrients do get lost when cooked in high heat. The short answer is yes, and no. Vitamins are more delicate and get destroyed when exposed to heat. However, when cooked over slow fire or in a crock pot, the phytonutrients and other minerals from the vegetables get “leached” into the broth, making the broth highly nutritious.

Drinking broth is beneficial when you are juice fasting and want to drink something hot and nutritious. Hot broth gives your body warm energy as opposed to cold juice. This is also a great idea to benefit from most of the vegetable phytonutrients, if you live in a cold place and have need for something hot to keep warm.

What You Need:

This portion serves four. You may substitute these ingredients with other “hardy” vegetables that you fancy.

Use a large crock pot or non-aluminium 4-quart/liter pot and fill with the following cubed vegetables:

  • 1 medium celery root/celeriac – remove skin
    (You may use 4-5 potatoes in place of celeriac but leave the skin on)
  • 1 bunch of celery (about 10-12 ribs)
  • 4-5 medium-sized carrots
  • 4 large onions (or more if desired)
  • 4-5 cloves of garlic
  • Seasalt to taste (the soup tastes good even without salt, but when adding salt, the soup actually tastes even “sweeter”)

Note: Use smaller quantities if you are cooking in a small pot. I always make more and store the balance in the fridge for later.

Fill your broth pot or crock pot with 2 quarts/liters of water to boil over high heat. While waiting, wash and scrub the vegetables well with a vegetable brush. Cut them up into small cubes.

Put all your cut vegetables into the boiling water. In a crock pot, I put it on high heat yet it doesn’t dry out the water. If you are cooking over the stove, you will have to put it on lower heat, have the lid on and check every now and then to be sure it doesn’t boil over or dry up.

I put the slow cooker to cook on high for about six hours, until all the vegetables turned soft.

Once cooked, you may like to run the cooked vegetables through a food mill/processor. A gear juicer works well for this function, using the “mincing” screen. Otherwise, use a blender and blend till you get a smooth consistency. Do this while the soup is warm, NOT when it’s hot or cold. Then add the pulp back into the broth and drink as a thick soup. I like mine just as it is — clear broth. When juice fasting I don’t eat the soft vegetables.

Serve hot to warm.

Let the soup cool before storing. Keep in air-tight container in the refrigerator and consume in no more than 48 hours. To reheat, simmer over stove, do not use microwave oven.
