Pianos. Am I right?
Is there a better-equipped musical instrument on earth to handle everything you throw at it? I’m talking about one of the most versatile instruments out there — a single music maker that embodies string and rhythm sections, and an angel choir. With a seven-octave range (and a minor 3 rd to boot), these babies can handle everything from Chopin to Taylor Swift, Son House to Backstreet Boys.
No, I am not a piano salesman… though it has crossed my mind. I’m just an enthusiast and part-time player who covets these gorgeous, highly polished creatures. And let me tell you, there is not one single keyboard that can run in the same crowd as an acoustic piano. Not one! Are you sold yet?
I’ve reached the other side of my rant and it occurs to me that you may have some misgivings about acquiring a piano that I can help you around. For one, they can be very expensive. Pianos range from a couple hundred bucks (for something fairly questionable) to hundreds of thousands. I’m here to tell you how to get one for free… or nearly free.
Craigslist
People are lining up to give away pianos for free or super cheap. Pianos are heavy and expensive to move — a frustrating combo for piano owners, but the perfect mix for a resourceful piano enthusiast with access to a truck and a couple friends. Sellers are generally motivated by an impending move, lack of space, or unexpected inheritance from their great aunt Shirley, so put your negotiating hat on — if you offer to take the piano off their hands ASAP, many sellers will drop their price down to zero. Be ready to hop in the car with a few strong friends as soon as you see one you like! And if you have a few bucks to spend, leave your friends out of it — specialized piano movers can often pick up and deliver on short notice, and may even help you tune your new toy.
A rarely-used (by me, at least) Ebay search setting could be the key to your free piano. Search for pianos, and on the results page, scroll way down until you see the option “Item Location” in the left sidebar. Set the location to within a drivable range of your zip code and if your neighborhood is anything like mine, suddenly you’ll start seeing search results like the one below. You may also notice that most of the prices have “or best offer” in small font below, so keep the negotiating advice for Craigslist in mind for Ebay, too!
PianoAdoption.com
Yes, this is a real site aimed at people desperate for their treasured piano to go to a good home. They have listings by state. Search, find, and conquer.
Cruise Ships
These floating cities have a ton of pianos and every once in a while they change them all out. It could be the end of a contract with a particular piano company, or simply time to upgrade, but either way it could work out in your favor. It helps to have a friend at one of the major cruise companies, but with a little investigation you can get in touch with the right department and find out when they’re delivering free gold to the shores.
Schools, Universities, and Churches
Much like cruise ships, schools and churches house a nearly infinite number of pianos, and all of them will be up for grabs at one point or another. Check college and community bulletin boards, reach out to the music departments directly, troll their Facebook pages, or give your old high school piano teacher a call and see if she has the inside scoop on when they’ll be updating their inventory. (Pro tip: occasionally public schools pianos are sent to government auction. A quick google search turned up pianos from $1-200 on sites like GovDeals, Municibid, and GSAAuctions).
Charitable Donation
If you work for a non-profit, church, or school, there are a number of organizations — foundations, music stores, manufacturers — who love giving away pianos for the tax credit. Check out your local classifieds for some options, put the request out to your email list, and think outside of the box — groups like moving companies, real estate developers, churches, and music management and production companies all find themselves with unwanted pianos from time to time.
Closing Theater Companies
Our beautiful Soundfly Piano came to us from a theater company that was going out of business. They’d enjoyed a good run, but ultimately had to close and get rid of Mr. Hamilton, our beautiful piece of music art. They were so happy for us to take it off their hands that they lowered it from a second story window on a winch. Best. Day. Ever!

How It Works
Piano Removal Made Easy
Pianos can be tedious and take up more space than they need, especially if they continue to go unused. Though often an instrument that has been in the family for years, or one that you thought you would pick up as a hobby, pianos sometimes need to go. This isn’t easy. Piano movers are available, but they don’t often dispose of such large and heavy instruments. That’s where JUST JUNK’s piano disposal team comes in!
- We remove everything!
- We do all the work!
- We recycle and donate!
- Free estimates!
Next Day Pickup
It’s easy! By calling JUST JUNK at 1-888-586-5888 today you can speak to a member of our expert removal team to help with disposing of your piano. With our same and next day removal service, JUST JUNK can arrive, provide a free, no obligation estimate (for ANY removal!) even on short notice to ensure that your piano is removed quickly, safely, and effiently. If you’re ready today, you can even book online!
Recycling and Donations
It’s true, pianos, whether they are full sized, grand pianos or smaller organs, are often tough to remove, or even give away. In many cases, our removal services are a last resort, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t make every effort possible to ensure that piano disposal services don’t mean “taken to the dump.” Through our many local connections, we’re able to ensure that your piano has a long life after you’ve sent it on its way. Removal doesn’t mean the end!
Calgary Piano Movers doesn’t accept piano donations but we’re happy to offer some suggestions
A piano can offer years of joy, creativity and entertainment for any family. However, sometimes when you buy piano you may find you want to upgrade or you just can’t see yourself ever tickling the ivories and find yourself wanting to give your piano away to someone who would truly enjoy it.
There are lots of wonderful options for those who would like to donate their instrument if you have a ‘used but usable’ piano you’d like to find a good home for but don’t have anyone specific in mind, check first in your own backyard.
Here are some great options:
- Call the Local School District
- Churches
- Colleges
- Private Music Schools
- Private Dance Studios
- Nursing Homes
- Senior Centres
- Check with a Service Clubs or Community Centres
- Donation Centres
- And don’t forget to check even closer to home: there may be someone in your family, a child’s friend, or someone you know at work who could put the instrument to good use.
Important Considerations when Donating a Piano
One important responsibility you have if you’re donating your instrument to a non-profit organization, such as a school, is assessing its condition and establishing a “fair market value.” Donating a less-than-perfect piano is a nice thing to do, even if it needs some repair to be useful, so long as your recipient knows what he or she is getting into. Don’t saddle someone with an unusable instrument just to get it out of the house. To be on the safe (and honest) side, as well as to claim the donation on your taxes, you should have a professional assess the value of your instrument. A piano technician, salesperson, or personal property appraiser with a specialty in pianos would be able to help you.
The good news is when you donate a piano to a qualified non-profit organization, you may be able to receive a deduction off of your income taxes so be sure to ask for a donation tax receipt.
Also, there are two types of donations you can make: restricted and non-restricted. A restricted donation is where you tell the non-profit organization how they can or can’t use the piano. For instance, you may want to donate your piano to a school’s music department, to be used specifically for students. In a non-restricted donation, the non-profit group decides how it should best use the piano. This includes selling or exchanging it for the resources it needs.
Finally, you should think about your own schedule. If you need to move your piano out of its current location by a certain time, then this will pay an important factor in who you donate the piano to.
Once you’ve found a place to donate your piano, it’s a good idea to take a moment to consider the needs of the organization you are donating to. The bottom line for a non-profit organization is that it doesn’t want to accept any donation that becomes a liability. If the cost of moving a piano exceeds the fair market value of the instrument, the donation will create a liability. One way you can make it easy for the non-profit to accept your donation is to pay for the cost of the move. And Calgary Piano Movers will ensure that when we move your piano to it’s new home it’s treated care.
Even if you’re not eager for a lot of publicity or kudos, make it a point to meet the people who will be receiving the piano. Make sure they know all about how to give a piano a good home, i.e. keeping it away from windows, temperature changes, humidity, etc. Plus, it will make you feel great to know the good it’s doing.
Calgary Piano Movers offers affordable to piano moving services so when you find your piano’s next home be sure to give us a call and we’ll ensure your piano is treated with the utmost care.

okay, fine mom. you don’t have to look at it anymore.
mom wants me to get rid of my old piano that is still sitting in their house in cleveland heights. i’m tired of laying guilt trips on her, so i’ll give it away on craigslist. here is the post:
Okay, my mom is really tired of looking at the upright piano that has been a fixture in her Cleveland Heights home for the past 25 years or so. I learned how to play on it, but I left home 12 years ago and she wants to just get rid of it. I live in San Francisco now, so there is no way I could ship it out here, so I’ve decided to do the right thing and give it away, since it is mine.
Let me describe it. It is an Edwardian-style Willis upright piano that might have looked right at home in a New England saloon about 100 years ago (about its age, btw). It sat in a barn in Maine for 70 years before my parents got it back in the 70’s for me to learn how to play on. The exterior wood of the piano is gorgeous. flawless. made of solid red oak. my mom has taken really good care of it over the years. Now, it does need work internally. D-sharp right above middle-C is broken (but easily fixed). It needs to be tuned (kind of sounds like a saloon piano) and half the ivories are missing. With a little work, it’d be a gorgeous musical instrument. However, it does play, 2 of the 3 pedals work, and when the key cover is closed you can’t see the missing ivories.
Now, here is the catch.
I refuse to give this piano away to someone who is just going to turn around and sell it. That is defeating the whole purpose of the “free” concept. So don’t ask. I also refuse to give it away to someone who will destroy it or use it in some demented art project. there is too much sentimental value in this piano to me.
I will only give it to a young family who has a child who has shown interest in playing piano. kind of like my parents did back in 1977 or so when they got it free so I could hone my skills on it. I also will not give it to a family who wants to force their child to play. I’d rather the piano be something cherished instead of something loathed. I’d love nothing more for a young family to have this beautiful piano in their home to pass down to someone someday.
You also have to come get it yourself. When my father helped carry it up the front stairs with my uncle, he was 34 years old and my uncle was about the same age. Now my dad is 60 and my uncle is no longer with us, so you’re going to have to get a truck and some strong friends to help you with it.
My parents live in Cleveland Heights, right by Monticello and Noble. Send me an e-mail if you’re interested, and I’ll try to coordinate this from San Francisco. Remember. this piano is absolutely FREE to a good home, but you’ll have to qualify for it. 🙂 Just respond to this post, and lets talk.
it’s NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
this is in or around Cleveland Heights

So did anyone ever take your piano?
At 19:30, Anonymous said.
If you are interested in getting rid of the piano, i have started playing a few months ago, and problem is I have a keyboard but my teacher and I agree it’d be worth it if i could invest in an actual piano, and well i’ve been searching for the past month with little luck, if you are still interested in passing it off to an aspiring pianist, let me know at [email protected]

I’m in 8th grade and I am a self taught pianist. I play piano on my own free will and I am fairly good. I currently use a 70 key keyboard.
I just keep learning new stuff everyday. I put a few videos of me on youtube so if you want to pass it on to me look at my videos for proof that your piano will be taken care of. I know how dear something can be if you had it for a long time, I still have a special pillow that was given to me more than 10 years ago.
So if you want to pass it on to me here is my contact info.
e-mail- [email protected]
youtube account (for videos)- kuyamilo.
The videos are when I sucked at the piano because I posted them a couple of months ago. I will post new videos soon.
BTW think of this, how great will it be to see your piano whenever you want? I promise for future videos I will use your piano.
Thanks for considering.

Piano hauling, piano removal, piano recycling: Old pianos hauled away.
- Moving? Out of time?
- Don’t know what to do with your old piano?
- Do you need some extra space and don’t need a piano that no one plays? Want to get rid of an unusued piano but don’t want it to go to the landfill?
You have come to the right place. I haul away old pianos.
How:
You help me balance it as I put it on my truck, and it will be gone. (If you are not able to help me, I have helpers I can hire for $30-$60/hour.)
Where:
Greater Seattle area: King County, Pierce County, Snohomish County, Island County
How Much:
Greater Seattle Area: – For up to 3 steps I charge $400 flat rate (plus tax) to take away your old upright piano, and $500 for a grand piano.
Outside Seattle (south of Renton, east of Sammamish, north of Everett): – The base rate to haul an upright outside of greater Seattle is $450, and $550 for a grand. Longer distances are negotiable.
Additional charges:
For more than three steps, add $50 to the base price.
For more than ten steps, add $100.
For unusual terrain, such as hills, rough terrain, tilted slopes, extremely tight corners, tedious obstacles or severely inclement weather, add another $50.
For long distances, call to discuss options.
When my capacity is at its limit, my prices go up or you may have to wait until I have space. My indoor storage capacity is currently near its maximum limit.
When:
Generally I move pianos on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and occasionally weekends. Call ahead to schedule.
Where do These Pianos Go:
I am a piano recycler. I can’t stand seeing pianos being thrown in the dump. I would rather have them remain functional in the world and to be used in some form.
If it plays, it will be given away for free.
I would rather have these pianos played and appreciated than to watch them sit in storage or fall apart in the weather. My goal is to give new life to these period instruments and to put them back into the world again, so that they can continue to please, inspire, and enhance lives.
If it needs work, one of four things will happen to it. Ideally, it will be:
Restored and recycled into the world as a playing instrument
Given away for free as-is
Dismantled and salvaged for parts
Converted into art pieces
Recently I have donated twenty pianos to schools in Cambodia, and ten pianos to schools in Viet Nam, and two pianos to Zambia. My storage place is overloaded, so I am always looking for outlets for these pianos: starving musicians, foster children beginning piano lessons, artists who would like an endless supply of piano parts, metal sculptors, and wood workers who are looking for old-growth wood and unusual pieces.
Regardless of its fate, I guarantee that your piano will not end up in a landfill.

When this music-loving dad lost his son in a tragic accident, his grief fueled a program that brings the healing power of the piano to the people who need it most.
Tom Townsend and his son Alex always had one thing in common: music.
Tom grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where he struggled to fit in. Riddled by pubescent anxiety, he despaired of finding his place in the world. Then, one day, his parents bought a piano.
“It gave me my place,” Tom later told People.
STL Today
The Baldwin baby grand introduced Tom to his tribe, a community of musicians and artists that would change the course of Tom’s life, and, later, his son’s. The young Tom started playing in bands. Eventually, he used his creativity to fuel a successful career in advertising.
Along the way, Tom met a girl, Jeanne, who would become his wife. Alex was the couple’s first son. It soon became clear that Alex had a lot in common with his father.
Like Tom, Alex never quite fit in as a kid.
“He was a square peg trying to fit into a round hole,” Tom said. But as a young teenager, Alex gravitated toward the arts. He started playing piano, then picked up the drums. He made an award-winning documentary film about World War II when he was just 14.
After high school, Alex went off to Savannah, Georgia to study visual arts at the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design.
“I found my people,” he told his parents after his first semester in Savannah.
People
During his sophomore year, just 21 years old, Alex died in a car wreck. That was in 2010.
Tom and Jeanne were devastated by grief. But without knowing just what he was doing, Tom had been laying the groundwork for his son’s meaningful afterlife for years. As he mourned, Tom slowly began to realize that his son was inviting him to do something truly transformative for the community in his home town of St. Louis, Missouri. Though Alex is gone, his spirit pervades the life-changing organization that Tom was about to build.
The seed of the idea arrived years earlier.
Knowing that Tom was an experienced pianist, a friend asked him for help picking out a piano. As Tom and his friend searched through the piano dealerships and second-hand shops, Tom realized that the world was full of unloved instruments, quietly falling into disrepair in warehouses and showrooms.
“All of these pianos could change lives if they were put in a home with a young kid,” Tom said. “It was as much about saving the piano as the piano saving the person.”
STL Today
Pianos for People is already changing lives for the better. They do it every day.
Life is tough on the teenagers who live in the concentrated streams of poverty that run throughout St. Louis city.
Like kids in developing cities all over the United States, St. Louis youth face a host of destructive influences, from drugs to gangs to petty crime. The gift of music provides an alternative that can show these kids the healing power of creativity.
People
William told People that playing piano helps him handle his stress in a positive way. Amir even credits his musical involvement with helping him do better in school.
Counting note values, for instance, “helped me with my math and stuff,” Amir said. “It made me feel like I could do phenomenal things.”
Today, Tom runs Pianos for People full time.
He sold his ad agency years ago. From a tiny kernel of an idea with just two instruments to place, Pianos for People has grown to a staff of two administrators and five teachers. Donated pianos are pouring into the program at a dizzying rate. Pianos for People is even opening a second studio, in nearby Ferguson.
People
None of this would have been possible without the guiding presence of Alex.
“I don’t think of him being here constantly,” Tom said. “I think of him dropping in now and then. I think of him being off doing things and keeping an eye on us. The concept that he’s around, I absolutely believe.”

If you want to give it away, try searching for Freecycle. This is a network is made up of 4,313 groups with 4,758,000 members across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer.. Membership is free.
Another idea would be to donate it to a non-profit group – might even be good for a tax deduction.
If you want to sell it, there are also many groups that have free classifieds online.
Well If you live in or around a big city try Craigslist.com they specialize in classifieds from all different cities. If not look in your paper, or place an ad. Many people will be willing to pick it up or make arrangements to have it picked up if they are buying it.
I had the same problem several years ago and donated it to a local school. It was in great shape and just needed to be tuned.
First and foremost: the demand is quite low, so the prices go down.
Because they’re hard to move. Since they’re cheap/free, it’s easier to get another one in your new town.
Because you get a piano for your kid to learn and practice and then the child grows up and moves away and you have no use for it.
Because you redecorate and it doesn’t fit/go with the new decor.
Because you are downsizing.
It’s always easier to give away than to try to sell for a couple of hundred dollars.
Because they’re heavy and take up space, and need maintenance, and people are too lazy to actually play and maintain them.
They either don’t have room or they don’t have the means to move them to their new location.
Moving a piano is a serious undertaking, and so is maintaining one. My dad got a baby grand piano for free, and it didn’t take long to figure out why. Took 6 people to get it in the house, and when we moved it took 2 Russians to get it to the new place. He’s had it about 4 years now, been learning how it works and buying special tools for repairing it, and it’s still not completely right. You have to really, really care about the piano to put as much work into it as he did. Most people decide it isn’t worth the effort.
Because it’s the only option left after they try selling it and find out that no one wants to buy it.

Who doesn’t love The Muppets? I must say I am pretty excited about the new movie coming out later this year and feeling like a five-year-old once again. One thing you can always count on with The Muppets – they always have fun musical numbers. So it makes perfect sense that these fur balls that make us smile have teamed up with Yamaha to give away an AvantGrand Piano, which is an entry level piano, and two tickets (including transportation and hotel accommodations too) to the world premiere of Disney’s The Muppets in Los Angeles, California on November 12.
The sweepstakes began on September 26 and ends October 26, at 11:59 p.m. CST. One winner will be chosen at random from all entries received. It’s easy to enter and no purchase is necessary. For additional details, visit the Yamaha Facebook Page. One entry per person.
About the AvantGrand…
The AvantGrand N1, an entry-level version of the company’s acclaimed AvantGrand hybrid piano technology, offers advanced piano sound reproduction without the tuning, cost or footprint of a comparable stringed instrument. Serious players who live in small spaces or who have limited budgets need not sacrifice the feel and sound of an acoustic grand. Delivering the tone and touch of a nine-foot Yamaha CFIIIS concert grand piano, the N1 is the most compact and affordable addition yet to the AvantGrand family, which includes the N2 upright and the acclaimed, flagship N3 hybrid piano.

I GIVE MYSELF AWAY (by William McDowell)
[Chorus:]
I give myself away I give myself away So You can use me
I give myself away I give myself away So You can use me
[Verse 1:]
Here I am Here I stand
Lord, my life Is in your hands
Lord, I’m longing to see Your desires revealed in me
[Verse 2:]
Take my heart Take my life
As a living sacrifice
All my dreams, all my plans Lord I place them In your hands
[Bridge:]
My life is not my own To you I belong
I give myself, I give myself to You

NORWOOD (CBS) — A Norwood store has found its piano man. John Capron is the formerly anonymous musician who dazzled customers over the weekend when he came into ReMARKable Cleanouts on Endicott Street and played Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” on an antique piano.
“I love playing piano, I love when I’m pressing down on the keys. It’s more about my emotions and my feelings,” said the 23-year-old Mattapan man.
WBZ showed you the video Tuesday night. ReMARKable Cleanouts needed help finding him.
John Capron plays a piano in ReMARKable Cleanouts in Norwood (WBZ-TV)
“It didn’t make sense. I looked it up and I saw your post on Twitter. I was like I have to respond to this to make sure I’m not in trouble,” Capron said.
He was so NOT in trouble! The Norwood business wanted to gift him the small piano after he blew their customers away. Store owner Mark Waters had no idea the story you saw first on WBZ would go viral. Once he saw how many people were touched by John’s talent, he had an even better surprise up his sleeve. He presented the young man with a beautiful, valuable Steinway piano. They still need a little help delivering it to Mattapan; but John can’t wait to share more music.
John Capron and Mark Waters (WBZ-TV)
“Everybody’s like this is what we need during this time. I’m so happy I saw this. It’s made my day brighter. As long as people still feel the joy out of my music I’m happy,” the pianist said.
And the world could use a few more Marks, too.
“I’m a helper. A giver. I like to give. When I give to you and you smile, that makes me feel good. If you can make somebody else happy, bring a little joy in their heart. That’s what life’s about brother. Peace be with you,” Waters said.
The Piano Donation Process – How It Works
Thank you for considering a piano donation to our organization.
Why donate your piano to us? To aid our non-profit purpose of promoting piano education.
Who donates pianos to us? People who understand and appreciate the life value of learning to play the piano. Some have played the piano for years but, because of moving or downsizing, now lack the space for a piano. Others are settling the estates of parents who are no longer able to play but want their piano to aid in the cultural enrichment of others.
Who refers piano donations to us? Other not-for-profit organizations such as Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, veteran groups, universities, and schools rely on our ability to provide the specialized moving, technical, tuning, and other services required for pianos.
Where do we accept piano donations from? All 50 U.S. states.
Pianos we will review for acceptance: Acoustic pianos, electronic player and/or recording pianos, and a few digital pianos. Please note that because we stand behind the quality of the pianos we loan, all donations are reviewed to ensure they meet certain criteria. Unfortunately, those that do not cannot be accepted.
Do we accept musical instruments other than pianos? No, but if you have a brass, woodwind, or string instrument to donate, Click HERE
Submitting your piano donation. If you have a piano you would like to donate that is in good operational order, please give us as much information as you know about the piano and its condition by completing and submitting the Donate Piano form accessible from our Make a Donation website page. If you do not receive our auto-reply receipt of your submission, please check your spam folder.* After receipt of your submission, our volunteers will review your donation offer and reply by email within seven (7) business days with either an acceptance of your donation, a request for more information, or notification that your piano does not qualify for our program.
*To ensure receipt of emails from us, please add us to your non-spam address list.
Pictures help a lot. To facilitate the review process, please send us at least the following three close-up pictures of your piano.
1. The model number (usually molded into the cast plate at the top or sometimes in black ink on the cast plate)
2. The serial number (usually black ink letters/numbers on the cast plate or stamped into wood in an opening in the cast plate)
3. A frontal view of the piano with the bench sitting in front of piano.
(To locate on an Upright Piano, raise the top lid; for a Grand Piano, slide forward and remove the music desk assembly.)
Use the upload buttons on the Donate Piano form to attach photos.
Piano Pickup. Once your donation has been accepted, we notify our nationwide pickup vendor who will schedule the pickup with you. Because pickup routing is created as accepted donations are accrued, your piano will be picked up on their next route through your area. Sometimes this can be very quick; other times it may take a few weeks. We appreciate your patience in working with us to complete acceptance and pick up your donation. Your piano will be put to good use in promoting piano education.
Piano Donation Receipt. Within 30 days of our receiving your donation, you will receive via email an official IRS donation letter with all the necessary information to claim a donation on your tax return.
Establishing the value of your donation for tax purposes. For tax deduction purposes, the IRS permits you to deduct the market value of non-cash contributions. In general, donations valued at less than $5,000 require no validation, whereas an expert appraisal must accompany any deduction filed for a non-cash donation of $5000 or more. IRS regulations prohibit any 501(c)3 nonprofit organization from establishing market value. We may be able to refer you to an appraiser if needed.
If you need to file an IRS Form 8283 for Non-Charitable Contributions—which requires both an appraiser declaration and a donee acknowledgement—simply forward to us the form as completed by you and the appraiser. We will then sign to acknowledge the donation and send you the completed Form 8283. To learn more about the IRS guidelines for charitable contributions, click HERE.

Besides donating centres, there are a lot of great ways to can give away unwanted stuff and get back things you need for free!
Clutter: we all want less of it. From cutting down on shopaholic habits to being more selective and making ethical choices in what we buy, everyone’s jumping on the Marie Kondo bandwagon these days. We’ve already got our spots for donating stuff to charity but what if you wanted to give away your unwanted stuff directly to someone who needs it? Hold on to your clutter, we have options for that!
Freecycle.sg
When it comes to reuse and recycling, Freecycle is a global nonprofit movement to shift unwanted stuff among communities. Singapore has its very own chapter as well and functions as a platform (mostly active in Facebook) to put out unwanted items you don’t need and in turn help provide someone with what they do need by giving them access to the item. At the same time it’s important to keep in mind that it’s not about just taking items that are free for the sake of getting free stuff, it’s crucial that you focus on being a responsible member by taking only the things that you need and can use.

Freegood
Created with the simple concept to make it easy for anyone to give away and request for goods without any monetary exchange, the Freegood app came to fruition. Think Carousell, but where everything is for free. Founders Siddharth and Yuvi Bhasin were inspired by their past experiences in getting rid of unwanted stuff and also wanting to help others. Instead of letting everything become junk, Freegood aims to foster a culture of reducing waste, helping the environment and others at the same time. Win win!

Swapaholic
If you love shopping, chances are you’ve spent quite a lot contributing to the fashion industry’s socially and environmentally hazardous practices. It’s time to scale it back and create the change that the fashion world needs to embody. How? By buying less and reducing waste, of course. But if you were to get rid of unwanted items in your closet that no longer fit your taste or lifestyle and replace them with pieces that you want, you wouldn’t be wasting anything and that’s where Swapaholic comes in! Sign up to keep tabs on their events around the island to be part of this movement.

While tutorials are not my major focus, they seem to find their way onto my blog quite a bit. You can view a list of other tutorials that I’ve done here, complete with video instruction by yours truly. My tutorials are for the beginner, and they focus on playing by chords, with emphasis on maintaining the proper rhythm for each song. I add enhancements when beneficial, and I am a technical teacher, which means I explain the “how and why”, not just “watch me play.”

Though the piano is one of the easiest instruments to learn, the hardest part is not the fundamentals and technique. The most important part of any song you learn are the notes inside. It can be hard as there are so many different versions of notes and different scales. Sometimes trying to read sheet music can seem like trying to crack a cipher.
However, there are some great ways to remember music notes. Whether you’re studying how to read music or learning to play by ear, there are several ways to remember piano keys and notes. From mnemonic devices to repetition, the possibilities are endless in order to learn how to remember the notes on a staff. Follow these steps and play like a professional in no time!
Use Mnemonic Devices
When you’re thinking about how to remember piano notes on sheet music, one of the hardest aspects is understanding how notes look on a staff and if it’s a treble or bass clef. One easy way around this is to use mnemonic devices or word tricks. For the notes that fall on the lines of a treble clef, remember that E very G ood B oy D eserves F ruit , while all the notes in the spaces make a F.A.C.E.
For how to remember the piano notes on a bass clef, the notes in the spaces tell you that A ll C ars E at G as, and the notes on the lines remind you that G ood B urritos D on’t F all A part. If you are struggling remember what note to play, this is how to remember the notes on a staff.
Train Your Ears
If you’re learning to play piano by ear, then the first and most important skill you have to master is recognizing the notes you are hearing. This sounds difficult, as it’s hard to remember something you can’t see. It’s easy though if you train your ears.
There are great applications that can show you how to recognize notes by sound. Even if you’re reading music, it’s very helpful to be able to play the piano without looking and know how each key should sound when you play it. There are great websites such as Theta Music Trainer and Music Theory that have fun exercises to help you learn notes by ear.
Train Your Hands
Finally, you need to put your sight, ears, and hands together. While knowing how a note sounds and looks like on a page is important, it’s also crucial to remember where a note goes on a piano. In order to do this, the best way to remember and memorize it is by constantly practicing with what seem like boring exercises.
Nobody LOVES playing scales and repetitive exercises, but they exist for a reason. They teach you to play notes from muscle memory, as well as recognize the sounds of each scale and how they sound on different octaves. Sets such as Hanon’ s variations will teach you about different scales while helping to train your muscles.
