How to Make Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees

Craft Materials

Before starting this project, you’ll need the following materials:

So last year I was on this popsicle stick ornament kick.

I thought making a popsicle stick Christmas Tree would be pretty easy for the kids to do. And it was a cute ornament the boys could display on the Christmas tree.

I love having the kids make ornaments for the tree. Last year we also made these cute popsicle stick snowflakes and popsicle stick reindeer!!

Getting Started

I grabbed some popsicle sticks, green paint, ribbon and a big assortment of buttons for our Christmas Trees.

How to Make Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees

This was a craft I did last year with my boys. I didn’t get any step by step pictures so this is me “recreating” it!

Step 1 – Create Your Tree

I used the popsicle sticks and created a triangle for the outline of our Christmas trees. I hot glued the triangle together so we didn’t have to wait for the glue to dry. My boys were ready to get crafting!!

I broke a couple popsicle sticks to make the bottom of our Christmas Tree. I used my scissors to cut them straight across, so that I wouldn’t have any jagged edges.

Step 2 – Paint Your Tree

I gave each boy a bowl of green and brown paint and had them paint their popsicle sticks. We let dry for 15 minutes.

Step 3 – Decorate Your Tree

Once the paint dried, I gave the boys some buttons and pom pom balls. My four year old was able to make the glue dots and place his buttons on all by himself.

My 2 year old needed a little help with his tree. I made the glue dots myself and he was able to place the pom pom balls on top of the glue.

Step 4 – Finishing Touches

I added some colorful ribbon to the top to hang on the tree. Voila, a great homemade ornament for your tree.

How to Make Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees

Once we were done my oldest was pretty proud to display his ornament on the tree. That’s why I love crafting with my boys. I love seeing their faces when they’re done. They are so proud of what they made and excited to show their Dad.

Side Note: If want even more Christmas keepsakes, you should look at this adorable handprint snowmen ornament I made with the boys.

I think next year I’m going to dedicate a tree for the boys room and put all the decorations they made on it!

Step 1:

Color one side of 7-9 popsicle sticks green. Color one popsicle stick brown for the the tree trunk. You will only need 6 green popsicle sticks if you do not want to fill in the spaces on the back of the tree.

Step 2:

Glue three of the green popsicle sticks into a triangle as shown below. Glue the brown popsicle on the bottom of the triangle for the tree trunk. Feel free to trim one end of the brown popsicle stick to make it shorter. Glue the trimmed end behind the tree, leaving the smooth untrimmed end at the base.

Step 3:

Glue three more green popsicle sticks to the front of the triangle as shown below to fill in the tree, placing each stick at an angle to fill the front of the tree.

Step 4:

That’s it! Pretty simple, right? Your kids can use their popsicle stick Christmas tree in a puppet show, add a magnet to the back and display on your fridge or even hot glue a clothespin to the back and use to hang your holiday cards!

I wouldn’t say this is a craft just for kids. Imagine the gorgeous popsicle stick Christmas trees you could make with larger craft sticks, white paint and a little sparkle. Add them to your home decor or Christmas village. The trees without the trunk would also make a cute garland for your child’s room or fireplace mantel.

One thing I like to do with the kiddos each year is make some type of Christmas craft. They love it and I love that they’re being creative. Plus we get something new and handmade to add to our tree! However, I also don’t want to spend a fortune or end up making the whole thing myself. So we’ve come up with a few simple and easy popsicle stick Christmas trees that you can make too! Nothing fancy needed – basic craft store supplies and a small amount of time.

Supplies

I’ve included affiliate links for your convenience but you can find all these supplies at any craft store! See my affiliate disclosure here

  • Popsicle Sticks
  • Decorations – Shiny sequins, glittery puff balls, foam stickers, anything they like will work
  • Fun ribbon or twine
  • Glue gun/knife (parents only on this part!)
  • Glue – you can use regular glue if you don’t have a glue gun

DIY Popsicle Stick Christmas Tree

  • Assemble the trees first. Use a whole stick for the trunk. I also use a whole stick for the bottom branch. Use a knife to score the sticks in differing lengths for the rest of your branches. They will break pretty easily once you score them and they don’t have to be perfect because they will get covered up with decorations.
  • Use a glue gun or regular glue to attach your branches. You can certainly use regular glue but the glue gun goes faster and you can get to work on decorating faster. The regular glue takes longer to dry.
  • Then add the fun parts. I let my kids decorate any way they want – no perfection necessary!
  • Cut a small length of fun ribbon or twine and glue each end to the top of your tree.
  • Add it to your own tree and wallah! Fun kids craft they can enjoy every year!

Look how shiny and pretty they are! Your kiddos will love it! So easy and simple! I’ve tried more complicated crafts with them (for reference, mine are 10 and 7) and they always love the simple ones the best!

And here’s the second one we made that’s even easier!

  • Use 3 popsicle sticks for each one – arrange it in a triangle and use glue to attach the ends. Let them decorate with all the shiny fun stuff and that’s it. No hanger needed because it’ll just hang on a branch! Told you it was easy and simple.

  • School Glue
  • Brown Cardstock
  • Green Decorative Scrapbook Paper
  • Green Craft Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Small Rhinestones

Directions:

First grab three popsicle sticks and glue them together to look like a triangle. Set aside to let it dry completely. Repeat for each tree you want to make.

It’s finally long-sleeve weather here in SoCal, and Santas are beginning to pop up in malls and shopping centers.

The big question is – when does the Christmas tree go up?

We tend to wait a bit closer to Christmas because once the tree is up, the kids start questioning when the presents are coming. Plus, even though we use an artificial tree, the leaves still fall off and “leave” a mess on the floor.

So to get into the Christmas spirit without putting up the tree, today we are doing a popsicle stick Christmas tree ornament! It’s super simple, and your kids will have tons of fun decorating their tree ornaments.

How to Make Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees

Materials:

  • Popsicle sticks or craft sticks (I used 3 green popsicle sticks and 1 uncolored one)
  • Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
  • String or twine
  • Gem stickers (optional)
  • Pipe cleaners (optional)
  • Scissor

Steps:

  1. Use a scissor and cut the colored popsicle stick about 3/4 of its length. This section will be the bottom of the triangle that forms the tree.

How to Make Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees

  1. Hot glue the colored popsicle sticks together to make the tree. Tip: Create the triangle first with the popsicle sticks and use one hand to hold the shape in place. Then quickly, hot glue the ends together by moving the sticks apart, applying hot glue, and pressing the sticks back together.

How to Make Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees

  1. Use a scissor and cut 1/4 of the length of the uncolored popsicle stick.
  2. Hot glue the uncolored popsicle stick to the middle of the shorter side of the triangle to make the tree trunk.
  3. Hot glue the string or twin to the top of the tree.

How to Make Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees

Popsicle Stick Christmas Tree

I love making crafts out of popsicle sticks. They are usually super affordable at the craft store, so I always keep my craft room stocked with them. There are so many things you can make with them. Turns out, you can make Christmas trees out of popsicle sticks too.

I wanted to create something you can make with your kids. Craft time with kids can be either pure chaos or a lot of fun. The secret is picking a craft that doesn’t involve a lot of steps. The more things they can do on their own, the easier it will be for you.

Aren’t these the cutest things ever?

Oh and another reason this craft is so amazing is that it is super cheap too. It won’t cost you very much, especially if you get the craft paper on sale.

Let your kiddos pick out their favorite paper and decorations. If you are feeling adventurous, you can even let them paint white cardstock and use that for the branches.

Take my advice and prepare for having more supplies than you think you will need. Since these are so easy to make, your kiddos will want to make a bunch of them.

And have plenty of “tree decorations” too. I used buttons and pom-poms. But you can also use foam stickers, glitter glue, beads, or ribbon.

  • Buttons
  • Christmas colored pom poms

How to Make These Kids’ Christmas Tree Ornaments

I also have all the steps and supplies in a printable card at the bottom of this post. But if you enjoy step-by-step pictures, here are some with a few tips in the mix too.

Step 1: Cut your scrapbook paper ½” wide and in varying lengths. You want to have 5-6 pieces that will be widest at the bottom at the smallest at the top, just like the branches on a traditional tree.

You don’t have to measure it with a ruler or anything. Just use a popsicle stick and begin cutting out strips of paper that will fit on it and look like a tree.

How to Make Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees

Step 2: Using your glue stick or glue gun, attach the pieces of paper to the craft stick. If you are going to paint the branches, you might want to do that before attaching them to the popsicle stick.

How to Make Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees

Step 3: Decorate your tree with buttons, pom poms or any other items you like. Just don’t make it too heavy or the paper “branches” will droop.

How to Make Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees

Step 4: Turn the tree over and attach your ribbon. To make sure this stays secure, you may want to use the glue gun here.

Frequently Asked Questions

As easy as this craft is, it’s ok if you run into questions or problems. Leave a comment on this post and your question might end up here in the FAQs to help others out.

What can you use if you don’t have a glue gun?

If you don’t have a glue gun, you can use white glue or glue sticks. White glue tends to be messier, so be careful! A glue stick will certainly work, but it isn’t as strong as hot glue.

So if you plan on decorating the “branches” of the tree, a glue stick might not hold it very well.

How do you personalize the ornaments?

This is my favorite part – personalizing them! There are lots of ways to make them unique and reflect your personality. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

  • Favorite colors: Use just your favorite colors, from the scrapbook paper to the decorations.
  • Team stickers: Are you a sports fan? Use your team’s colors and emblems on your ornament.
  • Initials: Put your initials on the branches of the tree, or the initials of you and your partner/spouse.
  • Theme: Decorate them with a theme in mind. Maybe do a fun “newlywed” theme with white colors and lace or celebrate music by drawing music notes on the branches.

Is there a way to make the branches of the tree sturdier?

Scrapbook paper tends to be pretty flimsy. If you want to add more decorations to them, you will need a stronger material. Here are a few ways to make the branches stronger and able to hold more.

  • Use cardstock
  • Glue the paper to cardboard first, then glue the cardboard to the popsicle stick
  • Decorate popsicle sticks and glue paper to the popsicle sticks as branches

What else can I use to hang up my ornament on the tree?

I prefer to create a loop out of the decorative ribbon and hang it on the tree that way. But if you want, here are some more ways to hang your ornament on the tree.

  • Dental floss
  • Burlap ribbon
  • Paper clip – Glue the paperclip to the popsicle stick first.
  • Wire
  • Yarn

Basically, be creative. If it can create some sort of loop, you can use it to hang up the ornament.

How to make a Christmas Tree Popsicle Stick Ornament with kids:

  1. Gather all of your craft supplies you want to use for your Christmas Tree. You can use so many different craft supplies to decorate these trees. My list above is just what we used.
  2. Take the Popsicle stick and or skinny sticks and glue them together into a triangle shape. If you are using clear glue you while have to leave them a while to dry before decorating. I started out with clear glue but my kids got tired of waiting so I used the hot glue gun to make more so they could decorate them sooner. 3. Now for the fun part! Let the kids use the craft supplies to decorate the trees. Leave these to dry.
  4. Once dry I went back and added string to the top of the tree so we could use these as ornaments. I also cut cardboard to glue on as the tree trunk.

Christmas Craft for All Ages

The kids had so much fun picking and choosing what craft supplies to use on their Christmas trees. These are only a few of the trees we made pictures of below. I think they could have kept making them until we had no more craft sticks in the house. I loved watching their creativity as they decorated.

I even got to join in and make a few with them. They could not wait for them to dry so they could add them to their little tree in their room. I love making holiday crafts with my kids. I am cherishing this time because they are growing up so fast and craft time with mom will be old news soon.

  • craft sticks – natural or pre-colored
  • green wool
  • glue
  • pom poms
  • optional: clothespins

How to Make Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees

You can adjust the “how to” for this tutorial – depending on the skills of the child.

Take 3 green craft sticks (or color them green). Position them to make a triangle and glue together two (you can also glue all 3 together now to form a triangle, but yarn wrapping will be slower). Allow the glue to set.

Tie the yarn at the top of the triangle. Add glue along the craft sticks.

How to Make Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees

Start “wrapping” the yarn, making the figure 8, around the craft sticks. Slowly progress towards the bottom, do not weave too tightly. When you get to the bottom tie a know. Add more glue to set the yarn if necessary.

Glue the pom poms to decorate the tree.

You can leave it as is or add a clothespin for a trunk.
