As a service, Hulu is made and produced primarily in English. This is great for native English speakers, of course, but not so convenient for anyone else.

You can change the language used on Hulu shows and movies by accessing the subtitles and audio menu.

Additionally, Hulu notes that some series may have different show pages if they were fully recorded in multiple languages. For example, “Southpark En Español” has a separate listing from “South Park,” rather than just having a language track.

You can change the language of your Hulu programs using any version of the app. Here’s a guide on how to do it using the desktop version of the app for Mac and PC, or the mobile app for Apple and Android devices.

How to change your Hulu language on desktop

1. Using any internet browser on your Mac or PC, log into Hulu and begin playing the movie or show you’d like to watch.

2. Move your cursor to the bottom-left corner and click on the gear icon.

3. Click on the subtitles or audio options to change the default language to any available language, or add subtitles.

How to change your Hulu language in the mobile app

1. Open Hulu on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device and begin playing the movie or show you’d like to watch.

2. Tap on the screen to reveal options. Tap the gear icon in the top-right corner.

3. Click on the subtitles or audio options to change the default language. The options will appear in a pop-up, which you can swipe down on to return to your show.

Make the most out of your subscription with these not-so-obvious tips and tricks.

When it comes to streaming services, Hulu definitely stands out, and not just because of its bright green logo. Depending on the plan you choose, Hulu can be a solid, budget-friendly alternative to a cable subscription, and its interface is one of the most user-friendly in the business.

Today, we’re letting you in on how to maximize the perks that come with being a part of Hulu’s streaming squad. Take note of some of our favorite Hulu hacks we feel all entertainment lovers should not live without.

The Hulu Hacks You Didn’t Know About

1. With “My Stuff” Navigating has Never Been Easier

The My Stuff section of Hulu is your best friend. It’s where you’ll find recent TV shows or movies you’ve been watching, making it an easy way to get to that next episode or finish the flick you fell asleep watching. Instead of searching or clicking through the platform’s on-going titles, skip that headache and head over to My Stuff.

Slick Tip: Free trials at Hulu still exist, but only for first-time customers. If you’ve never tried the service before, you can instantly snag the first month for free here.

2. Don’t Forget to Add a Rating

Normally, most of us pass on surveys and ratings, but a quick thumbs up or down after finishing a show or movie is a simple way for Hulu to get to know you. Once it does, the platform can start making recommendations you’ll actually want to watch. Let Hulu know you’ll never care about Freakish, no matter how many times the algorithm suggests otherwise!

3. Add a Kids’ Profile

Don’t deprive your kids of the magic of Hulu!

At the same time, not everything on there is appropriate for younger children. Keep things kid-friendly by making a separate profile for them and once you set your little one’s age, Hulu will automatically restrict the mature content you want them to avoid.

4. Bundle Up

Speaking of kid-friendly, did you know that adding Disney+ can actually help you save a significant amount a month? If you bundle up with Disney+ and ESPN, you’ll only pay $12.99 monthly for all three platforms. Considering each one starts at $5.99 each, that’s a savings of 25% per platform. The only drawback is this bundle features the ad-supported version of Hulu; if you don’t want ads, the price goes up to $18.99/month.

5. Personalize Your Ads

If you do end up going for the ad-filled subscription, don’t fret. Just make it work by personalizing the commercials coming at you. Through Hulu’s Ad Selector feature, you’ll be presented with up to three video options to choose from. But pick quickly, if you don’t make a decision in 15 seconds, it’ll randomly play one of the clips.

6. You Can Customize Subtitles

Keep the personalization going by customizing your subtitles, which is ideal if you watch a lot of international titles. All you have to do is select Settings and Subtitles & Captions. Once you’re there, you’ll be able to change the font, size, opacity and so much more for your viewing pleasure.

7. Use Your Smartphone as a Remote

Since you always have your phone with you, why not use it as a remote? When you download the Hulu app, you’ll be able to control the streaming platform from your smartphone making it the most seamless remote system ever. Forget going back and forth typing out what you want to use with a regular remote, the keyboard on your phone makes that time-consuming task effortless.

8. Host a Virtual Viewing Party

With the on-going pandemic, you may not be able to physically watch new movies or premieres with your loved ones. However, you can create a Watch Party on Hulu, which lets you simultaneously watch anything you want on the platform with other viewers.

The one thing you have to keep in mind is that this benefit is only available with the ad-free subscription of Hulu ($11.99/month) and it only allows up to eight different devices to tune in at a time.

9. Your Go-to TV Shows and Movies are Downloadable

Similar to other streaming apps, Hulu lets you download shows you want to watch offline onto your mobile device, but you do have to be a subscriber to the ad-free version. Additionally, you’ll only be able to download 25 titles at a time between five devices and everything expires within 30 days.

10. Don’t Pay When You’re Away

There’s nothing worse than paying for something you’re not using. Whether you’re trying to cut down on your screen time for a bit or planning an extended time away, Hulu has a handy Pause Your Subscription option that does exactly that. It takes effect on the first day of your next billing cycle and you can set the duration for up to 12 weeks.

11. Use Extensions to Access Hulu Outside the States

Streaming Hulu when you’re not in the U.S. can be tricky, but not impossible thanks to the help of helpful browser extensions like Hola. No matter where you are in the world, you’ll be able to mask your IP address, allowing you to stream as if you were in the States. Now that’s a hack.

12. Turn on Dark Mode

Don’t interrupt your sleep schedule with a bright screen that will contribute to you staying up all night. Hulu has a hidden Dark Mode that you can click on under your profile icon. According to Reddit, this feature is available via the website only, so just use the casting capability of your smart TV if you want to watch something on a bigger screen in Dark Mode.

13. Hulu is Available on Your Gaming Console

Beyond your smartphone or tablet, there are ways to watch Hulu on other devices. It’s available for download on Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo Switch and more. For a full guide to where you can manually download the platform, check it out here.

14. Finally, Clean up Your History

Last, but not least, keep your algorithm happy by fueling it with what it needs to know. If you didn’t like something you recently saw, get it out of your Watch History. Hulu can’t guess what you like, so guide it by making sure this part of your profile only has titles you’re into.

For anyone who’s a new subscriber, don’t be shy about taking advantage of Hulu’s Tastepicker that’s part of the onboarding process. Don’t skip picking out shows, movies and genres that interest you, otherwise, you’ll miss the valuable chance of personalizing your streaming experience from the beginning.

Find out all the differences between the different Hulu plans, and if spending the extra $6 each month is worth it for you to go commercial-free.

For TV fans and cord-cutters Hulu is a must-have, especially in the age of coronavirus when we’re all stuck at home starving for entertainment. The popular TV and movie streaming service has a wealth of familiar shows from networks like ABC, Fox and NBC that you can watch soon after they air, as well as a growing catalog of critically-acclaimed original series. For Hulu fans the bigger decision may be whether to choose the basic plan with commercials for $6 a month, or upgrade to the Hulu (No Ads) plan for $12 a month.

I tried out both versions of Hulu, ads and no ads (it should be noted that you can also subscribe to a Hulu Plus Live TV plan with or without ads, or add on some premium channels to any plan). Here’s how the two Hulu basic plan options differ.

Hulu (with ads): Best for casual viewers

Hulu’s most popular plan with ads is a great choice for three groups of people: Those who are used to watching live TV with commercials, those who are primarily using the service to watch short comedies, and those who want to save some cash.

I watched a few shows on Hulu’s option with ads. In my experience, watching one 22-minute episode of Bob’s Burgers, there were no ads. In a 23-minute episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, there was one 15-second ad. But while watching an hour-long episode of Saturday Night Live, I saw one 15-second ad at the start, followed by eight more ad breaks throughout — six lasted 90 seconds, one for 60 seconds and one for 45 seconds. This was obviously more disruptive, but similar to how it would have been watching it on regular live TV.

There appeared to be fewer ads during Hulu Originals: Before an episode of The Handmaid’s Tale, I saw one 30-second ad. The same was true for an episode of Utopia Falls. In an episode of High Fidelity, I saw one 30-second ad in the middle.

If you’re used to watching live TV with commercials, this is all no big deal — especially if you’re primarily watching shorter comedies on Hulu, or Hulu Originals. There’s also the low price point: $6 a month for access to Hulu’s full catalog is a very good deal compared to other streaming services. Netflix’s basic plan starts at $9 a month, as does Amazon Prime Video’s (if you aren’t already a Prime member, that is). If you can handle the ads, $6 a month is a strong case for this Hulu plan.

Hulu (No Ads): Best for serious binge watchers

If most of your TV watching happens ad-free on Netflix, or through fast-forwarding ads on your DVR, and you really hate watching commercials, upgrading to Hulu (No Ads) is probably worth the $12 a month. As the name suggests, the experience is ad-free, so you won’t see any commercials at all, making for a more Netflix-like experience.

The ad-free plan is also a solid choice if you use Hulu frequently, particularly to watch hour-long shows. This way your bingeing experience is uninterrupted.

However, there is one caveat: A few shows will still have ads, even on the ad-free plan, due to licensing issues. Hulu says the list is subject to change, but right now it includes the ABC shows Grey’s Anatomy, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and How to Get Away with Murder. It’s also worth mentioning that Hulu with Live TV’s ad-free option also shows ads with some on-demand titles.

Despite that, a big advantage of Hulu’s no-ads plan is that it’s the only way to download shows to watch offline. Unlike Netflix, you can’t download shows to watch later unless you have the upgraded plan.

The $12-a-month price for Hulu (No Ads) puts it into the higher end of the price range when it comes to its streaming service competitors. But if Hulu is going to be a major part of your streaming service rotation, the extra $6 to cut out pesky commercials is worth it.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

Ads are an unfortunate necessity on the internet—they’re how sites like this one are able to operate. But if you find personalized ads a little too creepy, you can tell Google (one of the internet’s biggest ad networks) to stop showing you personalized ads.

That way, instead of getting ads for things that you’ve recently searched for (or similar items), you could see completely unrelated, unpersonalized ads that aren’t based on your search and browser history. This way, you can still support the sites you love without feeling like Google’s stalking your every move.

If you’re an Android user, there are actually two steps to opting out: one in your Google account (which is the main opt-out method), and one on your Android device, which instructs apps not to personalize your ad experience. If you’re not an Android user, one step is all it takes.

We’ll cover both here, starting with the former.

Step One (Everyone): Opt Out Within Your Google Account

For the sake of simplicity, I’m going to focus on how to do this on your browser, though the setting exists on some Android phones as well. Open your browser and head to Google’s “My Account” page while signed in. If it’s been a while since you’ve logged in, you may have to enter your password here.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

On this page, you’re looking for one setting in particular: Ad Settings. You’ll find it in the center section—should be the third option from the top. Click it.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

This will open the Ads Settings page for your account, but there’s one more hoop to jump through here—click “Manage Ad Settings” to get into the real meat and potatoes.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

This page is pretty straightforward. For more information on what exactly you’re opting out of, read through the page—it should give you a pretty good feel for what will change when you opt out. If you’re committed to the idea of a non-personalized ad experience, hit that little toggle on the right side. You can also de-select the checkbox that allows Google to store said ad data.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

This will bring up one more popup to let you know exactly what’s going to happen, and if you’re okay with that go ahead and tap “Turn off.” Boom, personalized settings are off.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

After you’ve turned off Ads Personalization, a popup will appear with some options to check out Google Contributor and control other ads with AdChoices. Just click “Got it.”

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

There’s one more thing you’ll probably want to do here: install the DoubleClick opt out extension. This is basically an add-on for Chrome (it’s also available for IE and Firefox) that permanently opts you out of the DoubleClick cookie that Google uses for ads. Basically, this ensures you still retain the “opt-out” status even after clearing history and cookies.

To download the extension, either click this link or head to the bottom of the Ads Personalization page and click the “DoubleClick opt out extension” link. Once installed, it’s active—you don’t have to do anything.

If you’d rather leave personalized ad settings on, but want better control over what you see, you can do that in the “Your topics” section just below where you opt-out of ads altogether. Keep in mind these settings are personalized for you according to your search history, so your options will likely look very different than mine.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

If you’re an Android user and prefer not to get in front of a computer to tweak your settings, you can find the same thing in Settings > Google > Personal info & Privacy > Ads Settings. This is basically just a quick link to the Ads Settings page under My Account on the web, so the same results should show up here as highlighted above—thus, just follow the above-listed instructions.

How to personalize your ad settings in huluHow to personalize your ad settings in hulu

Step Two (Android Users Only): Opt Out of Personalized App Ads

If you use Android, there’s another tweak that needs to be made—fortunately, this one’s quick and simple.

First, head into the Settings menu—pull down the notification shade and tap the cog icon to get there.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

Scroll down until you see the “Google” entry in the Personal section. Tap that.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

From here, find the “Ads” entry, which is listed under the Services subhead.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

There are a few options here, but you want to click the toggle beside “Opt out of Ads Personalization.” Basically, we’re all opted-in by default, and you must do this to opt out.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

That’s it—instead of seeing personalized ads in apps, you’ll either see generic placements or something related to the app itself.

While this won’t prevent you from seeing AdSense Ads, it will keep those ads from appearing to “watch” what you’re doing. This is enough peace of mind for some users, and provides additional feelings of privacy, which is important.

Mar. 22 2021, Updated 3:16 p.m. ET

Have you ever found yourself drifting to sleep while watching one of your favorite shows when all of a sudden, you’re jerked awake by the loud sounds of a commercial? Well you’re not alone. Multiple subscribers to the streaming platform Hulu have noticed that the volume on the commercials that come on two to three times per program are extremely loud.

But exactly why are Hulu commercials so loud? And if enough people complain, can’t Hulu tweak a couple of things on the backend and get the issue fixed? Turns out it’s not that simple after all.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

Why are commercials on Hulu so loud?

While Hulu and other streaming platforms have revolutionized the way we watch TV, it seems as though advertisers are getting back to old tried-and-true tricks to keep our ever-wandering attention. Multiple users of the streaming platform have noticed that while shows play at a normal volume, the ads on Hulu can get obnoxiously loud.

This can get extremely annoying as a TV viewer and in fact, there’s even a law that regulates the volume of television advertisements. The Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act, passed in 2010, makes it illegal for any commercial’s volume to exceed the average volume of the channel that it comes on. According to the FCC, this prevented TV stations “from boosting the average volume of commercials to levels beyond the programs they accompany.”

However, advertisers quickly figured out how to get around the CALM Act by making certain parts of the commercial louder, but only such that they could be balanced out by softer moments so that the average volume of the commercial could match that of the TV program.

Advertisers often also make the initial few seconds of the commercial softer, before increasing the volume moments later, so it can appear to have the same volume.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

How do viewers get around this annoying volume issue?

According to multiple posts on Hulu Community in which users complain about this volume issue, Hulu has claimed that their “product teams are continuously working to improve volume inconsistencies across the Hulu streaming library” and that they urge users to pass along reports of volume inconsistencies by reaching out to their chat team.

But rather than frantically grabbing for the remote to mute the TV while Hulu “figures it out,” the FCC’s website suggests that viewers change the settings of their television sets to stabilize the overall volume levels. If you’re watching Hulu on a desktop, you can also install various plugins that automatically mute your computer during commercials and restore the volume when the commercial ends.

If that doesn’t work, file a complaint. The FCC relies on viewers to keep advertisers in check and alert them to commercials that don’t adhere to the CALM Act’s guidelines. If you feel like your commercial experience is way too loud, go to fcc.gov and let them know what’s going on.

You’ll need to note down if you were watching on cable, satellite, or broadcast; what channel it was on; the name of the advertiser and product; the date and time of the commercial; and the name of the TV program during which it aired.

With Windows 10 comes making it personal. Getting the look of the operating system you’ll be spending so much time looking at just right, pleasing to your eyes.

Besides just wallpaper and a theme color, Microsoft is including new settings to let users enable or disable transparency across the Start menu, taskbar, and Action Center. You’ll also notice a new animation effect on elements inside of each of the setting’s sections. Here’s how to make Windows 10 your own.

How to access Personalization

Finding your way to Personalization is straightforward, just launch the Settings apps, and click Personalization. If you find yourself accessing these settings quite often, you can click the Pin icon in the top-right corner to pin a tile to the Start menu for quicker access.

Personalizing the Windows 10 desktop

The Personalization settings page contains four new sections: Background, Colors, Lock screen, and Themes.

Background

The Background section is self-explanatory. This area is the place where you can set a new desktop wallpaper, a solid color, or a slide show.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

Colors

The Colors section is where all the interesting changes are happening. In Colors, you can adjust a variety of settings. Here you will find the Automatically pick a color from my background option. When this is enabled, the feature will analyze the background image extracting the primary color and setting it on the Start menu, taskbar, and Action Center.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

The technical preview phase introduced a new dark theme in the Start menu, taskbar, and Action Center. This theme will be the default theme when the Show color on taskbar and Start menu is disabled. Sliding the switch to the On position will enable scheme color to flow from a custom color selection or the primary color coming from your current background.

Finally, Microsoft is adding the Make Start menu transparent option, which not only will enable or disable the transparency for the Start menu, but also controls the transparency for the taskbar and Action Center.

Furthermore, if you need to change the high contrast color settings, Microsoft has added a convenient link right into Colors as well.

Lock screen

In the Lock screen, under the Background settings, you can configure to show a picture or a slide show. You can also choose the “Windows spotlight” option, which apparently is a new feature that pulls random background from the internet.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

From the Lock screen section, you can choose which apps show notifications, but this is nothing new.

Themes

Microsoft is also moving the Theme’s settings to the Settings app.

Wrapping things up

While there many changes new options to personalize Windows 10, there is still a lot of room for improvement. Currently, there is no way for users to customize the level of the transparency like on Xbox One, for example.

How we use your Microsoft Edge browsing history for personalized advertising and experiences

With your permission, we will collect and use your browsing history from within the new Microsoft Edge to personalize advertising and experiences for Bing, Microsoft News, and other Microsoft services. This means we will use your browsing history to make your web experience, including the ads, search results, and news articles you see, more relevant and useful to you.

For example, when we personalize advertising, if we infer from your browsing history that you prefer shopping at a particular store, the advertising you see might be customized to display that store’s products. Similarly, when we personalize your news, if you frequently look at travel blogs and read travel articles, then your Microsoft news feed might display more relevant news content about traveling.

What is Microsoft Edge browsing history?

Browsing history is information about the websites you visit using Microsoft Edge, including the list of sites you visited and associated data such as the URL, site name, and time you visited the site.

You’re in control of this data

Your browsing history is collected and used for this personalization only when you are signed in with your Microsoft account and have provided permission for the collection and use of this data for personalized advertising and experiences. Whether you provide this data is up to you, and you can turn this feature off or on at any time.

To manage the collection and use of your browsing history for personalized advertising and experiences:

Open Microsoft Edge.

Select Settings and more > Settings .

Select Privacy, search, and services .

Under Personalize your web experience, turn the setting for Improve your web experience by allowing Microsoft to use your browsing history from this account for personalizing advertising, search, news and other Microsoft services on or off.

If you stop sharing this data, Microsoft will no longer collect and use your browsing history for personalization of advertising or experiences from that point forward.

We will also stop collecting or using your browsing history for advertising and personalization when you are not signed into Microsoft Edge with your Microsoft account. We will start collecting and using your browsing history when you sign back into your Microsoft account.

You can view and delete your browsing history at any time

You can view and delete the browsing history you have shared with us by visiting the Microsoft privacy dashboard.

You can also view and delete the local browsing history saved to your device by typing Edge://history into the address bar.

If you delete your browsing history from the Microsoft privacy dashboard, you will still be able to keep a local copy because the browsing history on your device will not be automatically deleted.

Manage your interests and ad settings

Depending on your ad settings, Microsoft will personalize the advertising you see based on other data you share with us in addition to your browsing history. You may see ads based on your interests, favorites, location, demographic information, how you use our products, Bing searches, and other content. You can learn more about Microsoft advertising practices in the Advertising section of the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

You can modify your interests and control ad settings from the Microsoft privacy dashboard. Here you can choose whether Microsoft advertisements are personalized to your Microsoft account across all devices.

If the See ads that interest you setting on the Microsoft privacy dashboard is turned Off, Microsoft will not use your data for personalized advertising, including browsing history, regardless of whether the Microsoft Edge personalized advertising and experiences control is turned on or off.

Note that turning off the See ads that interest you setting on the Microsoft privacy dashboard does not turn off the collection and use of your browsing history for personalization of search results, content in your news feed, or other Microsoft web experiences. To turn off this collection and use of your Microsoft Edge browsing history:

Open Microsoft Edge.

Select Settings and more > Settings .

Select Privacy, search, and services .

Under Microsoft Edge data, turn off Improve your web experience by allowing Microsoft to use your browsing history from this account for personalizing advertising, search, news and other Microsoft services.

How to personalize your ad settings in hulu

During the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve seen a lot of normal every day activities change. Some have changed for the near term, and some will be long lasting changes. One of the things we used to take for granted before COVID-19 hit was getting together to watch movies and TV with our friends and family.

Fortunately, many of the streaming services have stepped up with Watch Party features to allow us to stream together while apart. Some of the services that support this include Disney+, Hulu, and Prime Video. Today, we’ll look at how to start a Watch Party on Hulu so you can watch your favorite shows and movies with others.

First, you will both need to subscribe to either the ad-free or ad-supported version of Hulu. What happens if you pay for ad-free and your friend is on the ad-supported plan? In that case, the video will pause for the ad-free subscribers while ads play for the people with the ad-supported plan.

Also, it’s worth noting that Watch Party is only available for users 18 and over on the service, it doesn’t work on mobile at this time, and you’re limited to a total of eight viewers. Now, follow these simple steps below and get to binge-watching.

1. Open Hulu.com using the web browser on your computer.
2. Navigate to the Details page for the show or movie you’d like to watch.
3. Click on the Watch Party icon and select “start the party.”
4. Copy and share the Watch Party link with up to seven people.
5. Once everyone has joined, click “start party.”
