How to Reach

By Air: Jubbar Hati airport is the nearest airport from chail, the distance is 63 km. Taxi service is available fro there to Chail. The airport is connected to Chandigarh and Delhi.

By Train: The recommended way to travel Kalka-Shimla track is by toy train. The Toy Train from Kalka takes approximately 5 hours to reach. Else the visitors can also opt for the road passage which is 40 KM from Shimla and 3 KM from the Chail town. Shimla can be reached via flight or train from the major cities. While the attempts were going on, a saint appeared in the King’s dreams and informed him that he should stop the establishment of the palace because it is the same spot where he meditated for years and was then buried beneath it. He told the King to build a temple there instead. The king followed the advice and had a temple built here dedicated to that saint.

How To Reach

By Road – Chail is about 86 km from Kalka via Kandaghat (roughly 380 km from Delhi). The approach of Chail is along the Kalka-Shimla route. One has to take a detour from Kandaghat. From Kandaghat, it is an hour and a half’s journey by road to Chail.

By Rail – The ideal way of covering the Kalka-Shimla track is by the toy train. It takes five hours from Kalka to get to Kandaghat. There is a dense cover of Oak and Pine, apart from the other major grassland covers in the area. The sanctuary is also home to rare orchids and several endangered species of wildlife.

Fauna

The Sanctuary houses mainly mammals. Ranging from large mammals like Common Langur, Sambar, Rhesus Macaque, Leopard, Indian Muntjac, Goral and Crested Porcupine. One can also find Himalayan Black Bear,White Oak, Indian Hare, Yellow Throated Marten, Silver-White Oak, Wild Boar here. People visiting this place must also come to the Chir Pheasant Breeding and Rehabilitation Center at Bossom and Jhajja which has helped increase in the number of Chir birds in the nearby areas. It also has prevented few endangered species of reptiles and birds.

Origins of the Chail Cricket Ground

In 1891, during the British Raj, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of the royal family of Patiala provoked Lord Kitchener to anger, which led to the Maharaja being banned from entering Shimla, which was the summer capital then. The Maharaja then made Chail his summer capital and rebuilt the place as per his needs. He built the cricket ground in 1893 by levelling a hilltop.

The Maharaja was a cricket lover and used the Chail Cricket Ground to play friendlies. After the formation of the Indian Union, the then Maharaja of Patiala donated all the buildings and the ground to Chail Military School and the Government of India. The cricket ground is being used as the school playground by Chail Military School. During the school vacations, the ground is sometimes used to play polo. The ground also includes a well-maintained basketball court. Occasionally, even football is played on the ground as there are goal posts present.

Will Chail host a major game?

No big matches have been played at this scenic ground. However, some of the Test players do visit Chail for practice sessions. So, why has there been not even any first-class matches conducted here yet? The ground requires renovation in order to be in a condition to host a match of such standard. Also, in order to play matches, prior permission from the Military School is required.

Another reason as to why matches are not held here could be the problem of balls being lost on occasion of a big six being hit. Although there is a fence to stop the balls from rolling down the hill, there is no way to stop those that fly way above the fence.

Chail Cricket Ground could lose the elite honour of being the highest cricket ground in the world if the remote district of Lahaul-Spiti in Himachal Pradesh, which is at an elevation of 3048 m, realize the dream of building a cricket stadium. This cold and barren land of Lahaul-Spiti might seem like an unlikely place to play a game of cricket, but the District Cricket Association has earmarked 3.2 hectares of land for the stadium in the village of Sissu. The stadium is to be built on the pattern of the Dharamsala stadium and would comprise of all the required amenities.

Surinder Thakur, president of the district association, has said that despite funds not being made available by both HPCA and BCCI, the support received from the people as well as financial support from the Congress MLA – Ravi Thakur – will help in the pursuit of getting the stadium built. “We have a very small amount in the bank account but this is not going to stop us from realizing the dream,” Thakur said.

Until Lahaul-Spiti gets their stadium, the distinction of being the highest cricket ground in the world will remain with Chail Cricket Ground. But, if Chail is not able to upgrade the ground to enable first-class matches to be played then the stadium in Sissu could have the privilege of hosting a major match first. Only time will tell which of these little towns will receive that honour.

Originally a little hill resort built by the British, Dharamshala is now the main hill station in the Kangra Valley and is also the headquarter of district Kangra. Winters in Dharamshala

The area is also fog free during these months where as the low lying areas are engulfed by fog. Seeing this from the hills of Dharamshala is a totally different experience and it looks if someone is watching an endless ocean below. This is the time however to be completely covered with woolens like shawls, sweater, cardigans etc. owing to the chilly winds and freezing temperature.

How to reach Dharamshala

The airport at Gaggal in Kangra is at a distance of 13 km, this is the nearest airport. There are daily flights from Delhi to this place.

The nearest railhead is Pathankot, 90 km away. Pathankot is on Delhi Jammu Railway line and there are plenty of trains to choose from at different timings. It takes three hours from this place to reach Dharamshala

War Memorial

It is a very beautiful place to visit. This memorial is built near the entry point to Dharamshala. It was built to commemorate the memory of those who fought in defense of the motherland.

Dal Lake

The lake lies amidst hills and stately fir trees. Dal Lake is bout three kilometers from McLeod Gunj and eleven kilometers from Dharamshala, next to the Tibetan Children’s Village. This small lake is brownish in color and not nearly as impressive as other lakes in Himachal Pradesh.

Kunal Pathri

This is around 3 km. A level walk from Kotwali Bazar leads up to the rock temple of the local goddess.

Dharamkot

11 km. Situated on a hill, this picnic spot affords a panoramic view of the Kangra district and Dhauladhar.

Bhagsunath

11 km. It has an old temple, a spring, slate quarries and a small yet beautiful waterfall. A popular picnic spot.

Kareri

1,983 metres, Kareri is 22 km from Kotwali Bazar. 13 km from the Kareri Rest House is Kareri lake, surrounded by green meadows, oak and pine trees.

Lord Elgin’s Memorial

8 km. The Church of St. John in the wilderness has a monument to Lord Elgin, Viceroy of India, who died at Dharamshala and was buried here in 1863.

Naddi

At 2,000 meters above the sea level and about two kilometers from Mcleod Ganj, a modern picnic spot is developing fast at Naddi. It is connected with a metalled motor able road. It is the only place in Dharamshala from where an open view of mountains and wide valleys on Dhauladhars southern side can be seen. It is also a starting point for a trek to Kareri lake, Guna Temple and Triund.

Triund (2,827 meters above seal level)

Triund is on the foothills of Dhauladhar range and is 17 km from Dharamshala and a 9 km trek from McLeodganj passing through Dharamkot and Rakkar at a height of 2,827 mtrs. The breathtaking views of the mountains and the valleys make Triund an ideal spot. A ropeway is available from Dharamshala to Triund and accommodation is available at the forest rest house at Triund.

Mcleod Ganj

Tibet has lent importance to Mcleod Ganj. The Buddha temple is situated opposite the present abode of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. This place is well worth a visit and around it is situated Tibetan monasteries and nunnery. A number of residential buildings, restaurants, antique and curio shops are present.

Tsuglagkhang (Dalai Lama’s Temple)

Tsuglagkhang is the most important Buddhist monument in McLeodganj. It enshrines three magnificient images, including an enormous gilt statue of Shakyamuni, statues of Valokitesvara and Padamasambhava, or Guru Rinpoche, the Indian scholar who introduced Buddhism and Tantric teachings to Tibet in the 8th century.

Church Of St. John

In The Wilderness Fifteen minutes’ walk from McLeod Gunj, the Anglican church lies in the forest near Forsyth Gunj. This neo-Gothic stone church was built in 1852 and has some fine Belgian stained-glass windows.

This sanctuary area with its well laid out trekking jungle trails both at Kalatop and Khajjiar is a tourist paradise. Dense Deodar and Fir forests are places of solitude very close to Dalhousie town. Visitors should look for pheasants and Serow in these forests but should be beware of black bear which can be encountered often in the area.

Hiking is the best way to appreciate the beauty of the flora and fauna. However, most tourists use taxis and buses to traverse this 43 km motor-able route to Chamba through Khajjiar. Khajjiar is officially proclaimed the mini-Switzerland of India. It is 24 km from the GPO. Daily return bus trips are available from the bus stand by Himachal Tourism.

The best period for visiting the sanctuary are March-May, and from September to November, when the weather is favorable.

The vegetation consists of mature mixed Blue Pine and Deodar forest, with some Green Oak and Rhododendron trees. Undergrowth in the forest is well developed, dense in places and with a good cover of grass in November.

A very thick and dark forest crowns the hilltop and perhaps that is why the place has derived its name as Kalatop which literally means a black cap. The spot really commands a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. One can see the hills, snow-capped mountains, the valleys, the hamlets, the greenery and the ruggedness standing from the place. The forest mainly comprises of the deodar, kail, spruce, ban trees and various bushes providing a safe habitat for wild animals.

How to reach Kalatop Sanctuary

From Chandigarh to Dalhousie (320 km.), on to Lakkad-mandi inside the sanctuary (10 km.). Kalatop is a further 3 km, and Khajjiar another 12 km. Alternately, from Chamba to Khajjiar (36 Km). Taxis and buses are easily available from these places.

The nearest railhead is Pathankot, 80 km away. Pathankot is on Delhi Jammu Railway line and there are plenty of trains to choose from at different timings.

The airport at Gaggal in Kangra is at a distance of 135 km, this is the nearest airport. It takers around four hours to reach Dalhousie from this place. As the flights are limited, and location is far off travelers generally avoid air travel

Chail, one of the prime tourist spots in Himachal Pradesh, might soon get its own airbase that will link it to various other destinations in the country.

Virender Kashyap, Shimla MP said that linking this tourist spot with air will help boost tourism in the state. The statement was made by Kashyap at a meeting that was held in New Delhi with Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha.

Not many must be aware of the fact that Chail is home to the highest cricket ground in the world, located at 2444 m above sea level. This cricket ground was established back in the year 1893 by Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh.

The MP requested the Minister to cover Chail under ‘Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik’ regional connectivity scheme (RCS-UDAN) Round II. This will allow more movement of tourists in Shimla especially in Chail region.

As per official data, an average of 10 lakh domestic and global tourist visit Chail each year, which is one of the renowned hill stations in the country.

Kashyap also put forward his demand to boost the daily frequency of flights in the state capital Shimla. He also requested the Minister for deployments of bigger airplanes on the Delhi-Shimla route. This step will help meet the increasing demand of the passengers.

As of now, there is only one flight of Alliance Air which operates between New Delhi and Shimla.

Chail is a beautiful, peaceful and lovely small hill station nestled in valleys of Himachal Pradesh. It is situated around 40 kms from Shimla, 110 kms from Chandigarh and 360 kms from Delhi. One of the intersting facts about Chail is that it is situated at an altitude of 2250 meters, even higher than Shimla.

We visited Chail during holidays of June,2014.

Day1 : We started our journey from Zirakpur at 10 am in the morning and reached Chail at around 3:00 pm. It was all because of bad condition of the road from Kandaghat till Chail that we reached later than expected. Another problem was hotel booking which we hadn’t done in advance and I would recommend fellow Ghumakkars to book hotel in advance if you are visiting Chail during summer holidays. Being the peak season, all hotels were booked. However we got to stay at Rashi Resorts, Chail. It is a nice resort and we got to stay at one of their individual huts.

Day 2: After breakfast we proceeded to Chail Palace Hotel, once owned by Bhupinder Singh, Maharaja of Patiala. Well known for its architecture, the palace has now been converted to a heritage hotel. Many films have been shot here. You can also enjoy delicious food at their restaurant. Do try their cold coffee..it was yum. There is also a drinks bar for those who love to booze. We came back to the town after spending some time at this beautiful place and proceeded to Kali Ka Tibba temple. Kali Ka Tibba is a must visit place in Chail. Being located at a hill top it , you can enjoy mesmerized view of Chail valley and breathe cool and fresh air. The road leading to the place is very narrow and poor in condition making it quite an adventurous experience. It was around mid of the day and our next destination was Chail Cricket Ground. It is being used as a play ground of the Military school in Chail. We were disappointed with the place as entry to the playground is restricted to everyone except school staff and students. We came back to our resort after strolling for some time and buying wooden souvenirs from Chail Mall Road. Compared to Shimla’s crowded long Mall Road, Chail Mall Road only has a few shops and eating joints. There was nothing much to purchase in Chail but you know it is a custom in our homes that if any family member goes on a trip, they have to bring gifting specialties of that place.

Maximum temperature goes up to 22 degree and may reach 25 degree during summer months ( May – June – July ). Minimum temperature remains around 15 degree. No need of any woollen dress in summer months. But these are required at Rohtang .

Don’t expect any trace of snow at Manali during summer seasons, however you will get plenty of snow on the way to Rohtang pass and at Rohtang.

Where to stay in Manali

There are plenty of hotels, resorts available at Manali and you must stay minimum two days to cover all the important tourist places. Ask your travel agent to book a hotel by the side of river Beas. Many hotels are available in New Manali area. If you want to avoid the busy town area then there are many beautiful resorts available outside the main town by the side of the river.

Many hotels allow online booking. Summer season (April to June) is the peak tourist season for Manali so it is advisable to book your hotels in advance if you wish to visit Manali during this period.

Khajjiar Himachal Pradesh

Khajjiar is a hill station in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, India, located at an approximate of 24 km from Dalhousie.

Khajjiar sits on a small plateau with a small stream-fed lake in the middle that has been covered over with weeds. The hill station is surrounded by green meadows and dense forests. It is about 6500 ft. (1981m) above sea level in the foothills of the Dhauladhar ranges of the Western Himalayas and snowy peaks can be seen in the distance.

Khajjiar is often called the Mini Switzerland of Himachal Pradesh and was officially baptized thus by the Swiss Ambassador on July 7, 1992. It has a rare combination of three ecosystems: lake, pasture and forest, all in one place. Khajjiar can be reached from Dalhousie, the nearest major town and hill station, by bus in an hour or so. There are two buses in the morning that leave at around 9:30. The last bus that returns from Khajjiar to Dalhousie is at 3:30 PM.

How to Reach Himachal Pradesh

By Air
There are three airports in Himachal Pradesh situated at Bhuntar, Gaggal and Jubbarhatti which connect it to Delhi and Chandigarh. There are no international airports in the state.

By Train
The railway network in the state is not very well developed owing to the high altitude. Shimla is connected to Kalka which connects the state to the rest of the country.

By Road
All the main places in the state are accessible by roads. Some of the roads get closed due to snowfall or landslides. The tourists can take buses or taxis which are a main source of transportation.

How to Reach

By Air : If you want to reach Chail by air, you will have to get down at Shimla – the nearest air link from the hill resort. Shimla Airport is serviced by a few airlines only, which includes Jagsons Airlines and Deccan Airways. The second option for reaching Chail will be to get down at Chandigarh airport, which has a comparatively greater number of flights operating to and from New Delhi. By Rail : The nearest railhead from Chail is the one provided by the Kalka railway station.
