Tips for driving in Brisbane

How to Rent a Car on Kayak

For a city with a population of over 2 million people, it’s surprisingly easy to drive around Brisbane. The airport is about a 30-minute drive from the CBD and, if you avoid peak hour traffic from 7:00 am to 9:00 am and 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, you’ll find most roads easy to navigate, even in central areas.

Toll Roads

Brisbane’s toll roads connect areas in a way that makes driving a breeze. The major toll roads include the Gateway Motorway to the Sunshine Coast, the Logan Motorway, Clem7 Tunnel, AirportLink M7 and the Go Between Bridge. However, you do need to make sure you pay to use them beforehand, or within three days of travel, to avoid fines. You can buy a toll credit pass from Linkt or at participating 7-Eleven stores and service stations.

Parking

On-street parking in Brisbane city is metered and often attracts strict time limits. However, there are plenty of car parks with reasonable rates, including at King George Square, Wintergarden, MacArthur Central and the Performing Arts Car Park , which offers a daily parking rate of $17. In the outer suburbs and surrounding regions, you’ll find much of the on-street parking is free, as are many car parks located at shopping centres and attractions.

Speed Limits

The default speed limit in Brisbane in built-up areas is 50 km per hour, unless signed otherwise. Limits are enforced by speed cameras and mobile police patrols, so make sure you’re aware of how fast you’re driving at all times, to avoid fines and for road safety.

I’m considering renting a car thru KAYAK, since, for whatever reason they have the cheapest price to rent a car in Alaska. I almost never make reservations thru the travel sites, just usually go direct because of getting burned in the past. Therefore I am a little hesitant and looking for others experiences.

Kayak is a comparison site.

It shows prices on various web sites side by side but you actually rent the car through which ever other web site you choose.

I use it to see possible prices and then book through one of the car web sites that seem reasonable.

Once in a while I use a “mystery ” site like Hotwire because they only use major companies and prices are sometimes(not always ) better.

There is really no need to book with Kayak. All they do is send your information to the rental car company. Is booking with Kayak cheaper? If so, how much? I suggest you book direct with whichever rental company you choose.

Agree with above. I have used KAYAK to compare flight prices, but have always booked directly through the airline.

I think you should do the same here. If the actual car rental company doesn’t offer the same price or lower, explain to them where you saw it. They should be able to match the price.

Agree with above, again.

Thanks all. You are right it just sends the info to Avis. But, it was about $150 cheaper than if I did it direct thru Avis and that was with a coupon off! And while not a lot of money, this trip is gonna cost a fortune so if I can save here and there on stuff that doesn’t compromise what’s important, I will. So I pulled the switch and looks like its AOK.

So thanks for your quick and accurate replies, do appreciate it!

Tips for Driving in Perth

How to Rent a Car on Kayak

Perth has been ranked as one of the best cities for driving, in the world. Congestion is limited when compared with other cities, road rage is almost non-existent and you’re never far from remote roads for total relaxation. There is still peak hour traffic in the city centre and surrounding suburbs though, so avoid driving from 7:00 am – 9:00 am and 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm, when possible.

The City of Perth operates an on-street parking policy to encourage a turnover of parking bays, for efficiency. You’ll find different zones with varying time limits and rates, from $5 an hour to $13.50 for 10 hours. Look out for Clearways, which are designated ‘no stopping’ zones during peak hours. Parking in them may result in your car being towed. Long term parking is also available at a range of car parks, including Barrack Bridge Car Park starting at $4 an hour and the QV1 from $5 an hour.

The default speed limit in Perth in built-up areas is 50 km per hour, unless signed otherwise. Be aware that this limit can change to 40 km, in particularly busy areas or near schools. Most motorways have a speed limit of 100 km per hour. Red light and speed cameras, plus mobile police patrols, operate throughout the city.

Will not rent from them again

Pros: I got a rental car on a day when there were almost zero options for rental cars at the airport.

Cons: Waited 2 hours to get the reserved car, car exterior was damaged and severely needed washing, and finding the place was tough. It was the worst car rental experience I have had in 20 years.

Pros: Nothing! We never got a car!

Cons: They don’t pick up where the other rental car companies pick up for a shuttle. But they also never told us this. So we’re waiting in the freezing cold waiting for a shuttle with our infant son for a while until I finally call customer service. They tell me i need to send a text message to a sketchy number to pick us up somewhere else in the airport! Huh?! So we do that and they never come! Seriously! Never come! We went to Alamo instead that night and they were wonderful. Do not trust this company. They are a scam.

Cons: We made reservation on 11/10. Landed at Philly at 5:30pm. Bad experience from first unable to find shuttle location. Waste almost 45mins to get to ez rental car office. Then was told no car available. (There are 3 customers there). Told us can give us ride to other car rental office. But the driver just dropped us back to the airport again. By the time we got car at other car rental lamo it was close to 8pm. Waste More than 2 hours to get reserved car from ez car rental at other car rental almo. What a joke. I could drive from Boston to Philly for same time and save $600 and headache. I will never rent a car from EZ.

Cons: My 1st time using Kayak and will be my last. I gave Kayak a chance and it was a mistake. I needed a rent car in Philadelphia and i booked through Kayak. My travel plans got delayed which caused me to arrive in Philly after 8 p.m. I found out that the EZ rental facility closed at 8pm and i wouldn’t be there until 10pm. 8pm is not very late and it completely screwed up my rental plans. Because EZ rental wouldn’t allow me to get my car after 8pm i attemped to cancel the kayak reservation and they absolutely would not refund my money despite my unfortunate circumstances. So now I have to pay over $200 for a rental i didn’t even use. The worst part is i STILL had to pay to get another car rental elsewhere on top of my Kayak rental. I gave Kayak a chance and I am very disappointed that i did. I wouldn’t have any bad feelings if kayak would just refund my money for a rental that i wasn’t able to use. When i found out my travel plans were going to be delayed I tried to cancel my rental before it started and still kayak wouldnt work with me. I would understand more if i missed the rental completely but i let them know before i was scheduled to even begin my rental.

Pros: The car worked.

Cons: We lost my husbands sister and had to get to De for a funeral, When we arrived there was a line to pick up car. Only one person to take care of the customer. We got taken care of bye a lady. she was doing the best she could being the only one there. we went to the car , looked it over and had no idea how to start the car, we do not have a car that you dont need a key to start. So we had no idea how to start it. we looked it over the car was dirty and I went in to ask for help. As I said she was alone. I asked her if there was anyone to help us she said no just her she would be out in a few minutes. She came out explined you must put your foot on brake to start the car. My husband thought the car ran rough . itdid not feel right we found out that a front tire and a rear tire had only 12 lbs of air in them we put air in them and it was much better. the drop off was bad also . we had a 6 am flight back home she had explained to us we go to a little building and there will be someone to check us back in after hours. when we arrived at 4 am there was no one there so we had to take a ticket to get in and park the car. there as a shuttle coming through at the time so we got on and told him what happened , we ended up giving the keys to him. he assured us he would take care of it. I called later that afternoon and explained what happened and they kinda got nasty about us giving the keys and leaving the car in the wrong spot. she said she would check with the driver. he had returned the key. I received an email all was ell . and it could take up to 21 days to get my deposit back. I will never use this company again. they were ok in the emergency but never again.

Pros: The people working there were nice

Cons: no air conditioner only a quarter tank of gas when I picked it up

Cons: Kayak didn’t provide me with the proper information for me to rent the car. It was a total waste of time and energy in this frigid weather. I will not be using kayak again.

Pros: Hybrid Ford Fusion as vehicle.

Cons: No notification about using Wally Parking shuttle at PHL to pick up vehicle.

Desventajas: Never rent from them

Ventajas: I liked nothing about the experience

Desventajas: First, I couldn’t understand the lady on the phone. I had struggles to find the driver who came to pick me from the airport. Once there, I asked for the price of the hold on my credit card and they said 500$. Which I found ridiculously expensive. Even if I didn’t take the car, they took the money from my credit card, and told me to call the company to be reimbursed. So no, it was the worst experience ever

Desventajas: They never said that the drop off should be at a different location for after hours

Ventajas: Staff was rude and they just has one person doing everything attending phone while putting me on hold at my face very rude they don’t know how to do business

Desventajas: On everything one thing im not going back to this company and kayak

Ventajas: To deal with Economy Rent A Car is a headache. I forgot I had had a bad experience back in 2016. But not to have a toll free number to contact Kayak as frustrating as dealing with Economy.

Desventajas: Please partner with companies that will increase people trust in your brand, not with companies that will make you look as bad as they are like ECONOMY

Ventajas: The person works there was very rude and unprofessional

Desventajas: Attitude must be much better than that and he should be honest with what he charge people.

Ventajas: The car was clean.

Desventajas: There was no mention of limited mileage. Third party liability should not be shared if not needed/necessary.

Desventajas: At the time of payment I was not informed about the insurance I was required to take at the time of pickup. Please make sure you put insurance amount as part of the car rental or atleast have it included separately. This amount is substantial and is supposed to be a decisive factor when choosing and option. Thanks

Hidden fees galore

Desventajas: Was charged more in hidden fees than the cost of the rental itself lol

Desventajas: The 1st contact was over the phone. We had gotten in at 1 AM and I called to see if we could push out the pickup time -NO, if we didn’t pick up the car within 2 hrs of scheduled time, the car wouldn’t be available! When we picked it up, I asked what time they close and open – We had a 9 AM departure on a Tuesday. They close at 6PM and open at 8AM – what kind of airport service is that. If we dropped off the car after they were closed, he would charge us $30. We had a family member follow us to drop off the car the afternoon before our departure. They wanted to go inside with us because they had used the same company previously and found them to be dishonest. They wanted to be sure the guy didn’t pull something funny with us at check out. We will NEVER use this company again and will warn others to avoid them as well. The most unfriendly person I’ve ever dealt with! Based on other comments, why do you continue to do business with this company.

BIG LAIRS STAY AWAY.

Ventajas: N/A TO THIS PLACE

Desventajas: Rent a car there for 3 days , received the car dirty and dusted , actually didnt have time for argue. When return the car the guy exactly point to the dirty spot cleaned it and said damaged , it was obvious fraud . Plus i have insurance bought at kayak the guy charged me insurance anyway , BIG LAIRS STAY AWAY.

Desventajas: Rental Contract did not specify total rental amount! They were hideous in asking if I want basic or full coverage basically implying these are the only options available. I fell for it and price weas twice as high as quoted on Kayak. I guess you get what you (think you) pay ofr. Next time I’d rather go with a larger company.
