With some older iPhone models dropping in value thanks to the release of the iPhone 13 family, the new year might be the time to start thinking about getting a good deal on your old iPhone so you can trade up.

Before you actually sell your iPhone there are a couple of important actions you need to take: Backing up and Resetting your iPhone.

With those steps done you’re ready to sell, and you have three basic options: telco trade-in, set up a private sale, or go through a reselling business.

Which one you choose will depend on how confident you are using sites like eBay and what price you think you can get through each method.

Telco trade-in

Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone all let you trade in your old iPhone for credit toward a new device. The process is similar across all three telcos, but the steps vary a little.

In general you can expect to get a little less if you’re trading in your iPhone to a telco than you’d get in a private sale but the process is pretty straightforward.

Telstra

To be eligible for Telstra trade-in, you must be a customer with a postpaid service, and your trade-in value will be applied as credit to your bill within two billing cycles or onto your credit or debit card if you’re on an Upfront plan. To trade-in with Telstra, follow these steps:

• Sign in to My Telstra on the Telstra website using your Telstra ID
• Go to the Services tab, select your account number
• Scroll down and click Got an Old Device?
• Complete the assessment and you’ll receive instructions on how to send in your device

Optus

If you’re a new or existing Optus postpaid customer, you can trade your old iPhone for credit toward your plan. It will be applied to either your first or second bill. To do so online, follow these steps:

• Select your device on the Optus trade-in website
• Enter your details
• Post your device using a prepaid satchel
• You can also head into an Optus store or request a call back to organise a trade-in.

Vodafone

Vodafone lets you trade an old device for credit toward your Vodafone bill or a new plan.

The process involves downloading the Vodafone Trade-In app from the App Store, which will assess the condition of your device.

You’ll then need to take it to a Vodafone store, where someone will tell you how much it is worth and then help you wipe it if you’re happy to go ahead with the trade.

You’ll need to bring your driver’s license. If there’s no Vodafone store near you, you can also call Vodafone Customer Care about making a trade.

Private sale

eBay is probably the best option for selling your old iPhone by private sale, with places like Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree alternative options.

Begin by searching eBay for other used iPhones of the same generation, model and storage size as yours to find the going rate.

You can tick Completed Items and Sold Items under the Show Only section of the left-hand side menu to see what others have been able to sell their device for.

If you’re selling via auction, it’s a good idea to set a starting price a bit lower than the current going rate of similar models that already have bids running on them.

Sellers should remember that, more than anywhere else, eBay prices are subject to change – and if you’re listing an item at low cost hoping to spark a bidding war, you may be disappointed.

When setting up your listing make sure you include your model type, colour, and storage size.

Try your best to pack your iPhone as you originally bought it, and if you still have the box, use it. If possible, include all the original accessories.

Use a reseller

Resellers tend to be painless to deal with and are quick to pay once they’ve received your handset. Mazuma, Mobile Monster and Cashaphone are reputable options that will exchange your old iPhone for cash.

These businesses work like pawn shops, and are required to operate like them. That means you’ll probably need to send them a photocopy of your I.D. before they can take your old phone.

So if you’re in the market for a new iPhone, now might be the time to start thinking about getting a good deal on your old phone so you can trade up.

Here are tips on what to do before you sell and how to get the best value.

1. Back up your iPhone

Before doing anything else with your old iPhone you should make a backup so that you have it for your next iPhone, and then wipe the device. There are a few steps to this depending on whether you’re backing up to iCloud, or to a Mac or Windows PC. Use this guide for the different processes.

2. Reset your old phone

Now that you’re all backed up, you need to wipe off your information by resetting the device. The first part of the process is removing your Apple ID from your phone. If you don’t do this, whoever you sell it to won’t be able to use it:

• Open the Settings app
• Tap your name at the top of the Settings menu
• Tap Find My and then Find My iPhone
• Toggle Find My iPhone to off
• Go back to the Apple ID menu (the one where you first clicked Find My) and scroll down and tap Sign Out

After, you can erase your phone:

• Open the Settings app
• Tap General
• Tap Reset
• Tap Erase All Content and Settings

This will completely wipe your phone clean and reset it to its out-of-the-box factory default settings. Once that’s done, you are now ready to sell.

3. Sell your iPhone

When it comes to selling your iPhone there are three basic options: telco trade-in, private sale, or using a reseller.

Which one you choose will depend on how confident you are using sites like eBay and how much you think you can get through each method.

Telco trade-in

Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone now all let you trade in your old iPhone for credit toward a new device. The process is fairly similar across all three telcos, but the steps vary a little.

At time of writing, 64GB iPhone 11 Pro Max models were selling for upwards of $650.

Completely wipe your iPhone

Craigslist and eBay will allow you to set your asking price — as opposed to other online websites that will offer you a fixed amount — and often prove the quickest and most lucrative avenues for discarding your device in the local area or otherwise. Craigslist prices always tend to fluctuate depending on timing and availability, but many people are willing to pay a bit more to avoid the hassle of shipping and waiting.

You might also consider a dedicated mobile device marketplace like Swappa. It’s free to list your iPhone, but you must take verification photos for the ad to be approved by Swappa staff. The sale fee is added to the price for potential buyers, and you should include shipping costs, so it won’t cost you anything extra to sell. The grading system is Good, Fair, Broken, Not Acceptable, and Recycle. If your phone is eligible for a trade-in, then you’ll get store credit back in return. Again, this won’t help you if you need cash, but if you’re planning on getting a new iPhone at a Best Buy location, then you might go this route.

Trade in Your iPhone at Walmart

Walmart is another store that has a buyback program for iPhones and other electronics. It’s much the same as with Best Buy. If you go to the Walmart exchange program on their website, they can advise you on what to do, though you can also go to some locations and conduct the transaction in person.

Unless your older iPhone is hopelessly broken, your neighborhood pawn shop will likely take it. The problem with this option is that you’re likely to be offered the absolute minimum amount of money that the pawn shop owner or operator thinks you will accept. You can attempt to bargain with them, but almost anything is going to be preferable to this method. The only good news is that you’ll at least get some amount of cash rather than store credit.

When it comes time to upgrade to a new iPhone, you have a good number of options for getting some value out of your old one. If you’re on an upgrade program with your carrier—or on Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program—the process may simply involve turning in your current phone and getting a new one. If you aren’t on such a plan, though, and you aren’t planning to hand down the old phone to a family member or friend, selling it will help offset the cost of a new one.

You could list the old phone on Craigslist or eBay and hope for the best, but that’s a labor-intensive process with no guaranteed results and some potential pitfalls. One Wirecutter staffer who has sold several iPhones on eBay has seen the US Postal Service lose a phone before the package even left his town. Another phone was stolen by a buyer who claimed—falsely, it was later revealed—that an unauthorized person had signed for the package at his address.

Instead, you can use one of several buyback services that have popped up in the past few years. These services generally offer a lower price than you might get by selling your old iPhone yourself, but the process is much easier. (By the way—whichever service you choose, make sure to securely wipe your old device before you sell it.)

Jackie Dove at Tom’s Guide thoroughly vetted seven services for buying and selling used devices after the iPhone 7 was released in September 2016. Tom’s Guide staff purchased a used iPhone from each reseller and then sold the same phone back to the service. Glyde ended up offering the highest return at 74 percent of the purchase price, followed by Swappa at 70 percent. Popular website Gazelle gave only a 52 percent return, but Dove noted the “quick and easy resale process.” In 2015, Business Insider checked out several services and found Gazelle to offer the greatest number of payout options, with Best Buy and Apple offering the highest dollar value, though in the form of store credit.

We haven’t tested all of these companies, but I’ve personally used Gazelle to sell an old iPhone, and the service is impressively easy to use: After you evaluate the condition of your phone, the site makes you an offer for it. You can then choose to have Gazelle send you a prepaid shipping box or a prepaid FedEx or USPS label. Once the company receives the phone and verifies its condition, Gazelle pays you via PayPal, a check, or Amazon credit, or you can choose to donate the money—with an extra 5 percent bonus—to charity. The company makes things easier for buyers, too, with a 30-day return policy. I’ve used the service multiple times, and each time the process has worked as promised, and Gazelle has paid the quoted price with no hassle. You may be able to get more money on eBay, but there’s much more work and uncertainty involved.

Swappa works a bit differently in that it simply acts as an escrow agent between individuals—you’re selling to someone you haven’t met, with Swappa coordinating the transaction. Tom’s Guide found that Swappa offers a higher return, but you have to use PayPal, and generally you need a verified shipping address. You set your own price for the sale (though Swappa provides some pricing trends and guidelines), and immediately after posting, you’ll usually have to deal with multiple offers of “I’ll buy it right now for $100!” Packaging, shipping, and communication with potential buyers is on you. One Wirecutter editor has had fairly good luck across eight sales and purchases, but he once received an iPhone that was locked to a carrier though it had been advertised as being unlocked. The sale had gone through and the money had been exchanged; if Swappa offered any option to report a problem, beyond leaving seller feedback, it wasn’t apparent. (The company admits that conducting transactions through its service involves a certain amount of risk, and it indicates that people should rely on PayPal’s purchase-protection policy.) In general, Swappa feels—and is—more “buyer beware” than Gazelle.

If your phone turns out not to be worth anything to these trade-in services, consider recycling it. Or hold on to the old iPhone! It could be useful as a game device for the kids, as a dedicated music player in the car, or just as an emergency phone in case something happens to your new one.

With the newest round of iPhones coming out Friday, before a trade-in to upgrade, some consumers may wonder what’s the actual value of their older phone.

“Decisions, decisions,” said Sara Beane, a spokeswoman for Swappa, a Kansas City-based peer-to-peer online marketplace that specializes in reselling older phones and technology. “Selling your iPhone can earn you twice as much money back, if you want to sell it on your own.”

These headache-inducing questions come as a new study says about 47% of American consumers wouldn’t be able to live without their phone. And, more than a third of those consumers believe that their phone is the most important thing they own.

“This shows how our phones, especially during the pandemic, has become a lifeline of sorts during this difficult time and it may only get stronger,” said Kady Srinivasan, the head of global marketing at Klaviyo, an ecommerce marketing platform. “I think it underscores how important our phones have become in both our personal and professional lives.”

That potential interpersonal disconnect, as well as FOMO (fear of missing out), could leave many iPhone lovers looking to spend between $700 to $1,000 for that upgrade and frantically scouring how and where to sell their current model.

“It’s like a big moment in time, to buy or not to buy,” Srinivasan said. “But the bigger question is, ‘Am I going to be the cool kid with a new phone or not?'”

Those consumers also have to possibly brace themselves for a big letdown. For example, Apple’s estimated trade-in prices range from up to $790 for last year’s iPhone 12 Pro Max to up to $400 for an iPhone 12 Mini.

Beane argues because dealers and carriers may only pay half as much for a used iPhone, it might be better for owners to sell directly to another person to get paid in cash rather than store gift cards or credit.

:”You can get up to 50% more selling directly person-to-person,” Beane said. “We’ve seen that iPhones are pretty resilient and tend to hold their value. Might as well try to get your money’s worth.”

And the iPhone’s durability leads consumers to buy previous versions, Beane said.

The current model topping Swappa’s top-selling used iPhone list isn’t the most recent model like the highly-hyped iPhone X released in 2017, or its successor, the iPhone 11. It’s actually the underrated iPhone 8, which also was released four years ago.

The iPhone 8 received excellent reviews and was even called by USA TODAY “a solid purchase option,” but got engulfed by the X’s fanfare.

“The iPhone 8 does everything you need, without breaking the bank,” according to Swappa’s website.

The iPhone 8 also was Swappa’s most bought and sold iPhone in 2020, a testament to its resiliency as well as affordability, Beane said. The average price for the iPhone on Swappa is $183.

“We tend to think of the iPhone 8 as being old, but it’s very good. I actually have one as luck would have it,” said Beane, adding that her husband and two sons also have that same model for about three years.

The other top-selling used iPhones on Swappa’s list including the XR, X, 11, and 7, all have something else in common besides affordability. The devices can all run iOS 15, iPhone’s latest operating system released Monday, including the ability to FaceTime on Android and Windows devices.

Beane said even the iPhone 6S, which came out in 2015, has the capacity to use iOS 15, also making it an affordable option.

“It’s amazing what you may consider to be old, but look that there’s still a market for it,” Beane said. “Don’t discount the idea that your phone is not worth anything.”
