If you listen to music on your phone or tablet as you fall asleep, you might appreciate being able to set a sleep timer so it doesn’t play all night and wear your battery down.
Many people listen to audio (or watch videos) while they’re lying in bed, often drifting off to sleep in the process. Whether it’s a favorite podcast, an audiobook, or Pandora, it can be a soothing way to end a long, tiring day.
Sleep timers are nothing new and have been featured on televisions and stereos for many years. If you’re accustomed to falling asleep at night in your favorite comfy chair and wake up hours later with the TV or radio on, then setting a timer to put the device to sleep after a certain term saves power and money.
It’s no different now with our phones and tablets, which we tend to use in place of stereos and TVs, and being able to have your device put itself to sleep is definitely a great feature to have.
Setting a Sleep Timer on iPhone or iPad
iOS devices have sleep timer functionality built right into the Clock app. Many users may not even be aware of this.
Tap the button immediately below the timer (with the musical note) and scroll until you select “Stop Playing”.
Now with “Stop Playing” selected, whatever is playing through your iPhone or iPad’s speaker (or headphones) will be stopped once the timer runs down.
This feature works with literally anything you use to listen to be it music or other audio, as well as video, so if you’re watching Netflix and know you’ll zonk out in or around an hour, you can just set the timer.
Setting a Sleep Timer on Android
Android is a literal mixed bag when it comes to functionality. Chances are if it isn’t the core system aka pure Android, then your handset manufacturer might have included this type of feature into their version of Android. Otherwise, you’re looking at using an app.
If you do a quick search for “sleep timer” in the Google Play store, you’ll find results that immediately fit the bill. We tried both apps pictured below and preferred the second one, but we recommend you find the sleep timer app that best fits your needs and tastes.
For this particular app, we were required to give it administrator privileges to lock the screen when it puts the device to sleep.
Thereafter, you can pick the duration before it puts your tablet or phone to sleep.
If you need to cancel or want to add time, you can access those functions from the notification bar.
There are also some pretty useful settings, though the useful battery saving features are only available in the unlocked version, which costs one dollar.
Nevertheless, for the essential function – putting your device to sleep after a certain term – it does exactly as ordered.
So, the next time you find yourself listening to your favorite Game of Thrones podcast in bed or drifting off to something peaceful and meditative, remember you can set up a sleep timer and have it turn off shortly after you normally fall asleep.

Do you enjoy listening to media on your phone or tablet before you sleep? If so, perhaps you’d like the idea of a music sleep timer. Sleep timers are countdowns you can set before you go to bed. Once the countdown expires, it stops the audio playing on your device. The goal is to set the countdown to the time where you usually fall asleep, so your media goes quiet the moment you do.
People use music sleep timers for a myriad of reasons. Perhaps you sleep in close proximity to other people and don’t want to annoy them with your music or podcasts. If you enjoy a good audiobook before bed, a sleep timer will make sure you don’t wake up to hear the ending of the story and makes it a lot easier to resume from your last recall. For those with a weaker battery life, stopping audio from playing after you go to sleep will help you save some charge sot that you’re ready for the next day.
If you’re using an iPhone, you’ll be pleased to know that this function comes built in to your device already. For those of you using Android devices, however, there’s no officially implemented sleep timer at the time of writing. Don’t despair, however; there are still ways to shut off your media after you’ve fallen asleep.

Exploring Sleep Timer Apps
The good news is there are apps out there that can help you out, and most of them are free of charge. Doing a Google Play search for “sleep timer” will bring up some solid results, including some very highly-rated apps. As such, it’s not a problem to find and download a sleep timer.
The problem is you’ll probably need to take some time to find the sleep timer. People use a myriad of different programs to stream media. There’s also a variance of what media is being played, from music to movies to podcasts. As such, you need an app that can pause the software you like using. This may take a little bit of experimentation before you find a timer compatible with your media app. The app that I gelled with is called “Super Simple Sleep Timer,” and it performs exactly how it claims. Here’s how it works.
1. After you download and boot up the timer, you’ll be presented with several options. The topmost one is for selecting the app you want to pause when the timer expires. Touch this open, then select the program you’ll be listening to media in. In this example we’ll pick YouTube.
2. Now that your program is selected, it’s time to tell the app how long to wait before pausing the media. You can do this by touching the dot on the timer wheel and moving it, as if you’re setting the time on a clock. The centre of the circle will tell you how many minutes you’ve selected, so you can set a precise time for your countdown. Once you’re finished, press the “Set Sleep Timer” button to start the countdown.
3. Once the timer has started, it will appear in your notifications bar. From here you can see the precise time the media will stop playing. If you’re feeling insomnia setting in, you can cancel the timer by pressing the “Cancel” button. You can also add another 5 minutes if you’re getting to a particularly good part of a story by pressing the “5 mins” button. Once this timer expires, the media you selected will automatically pause itself.
Don’t Lose Sleep Over Timers
Given Android’s lack of a built-in sleep timer, users have to turn to third-party apps to fit their needs. This can be annoying, as not all timers work with the software you’ll want it to work with. With some experimentation, however, you can hopefully find a music sleep timer that suits your bedtime-listening needs.

A lot of people like to fall asleep to music, hence the ubiquitous clock-radio of yesteryear, which had a timer to shut itself off after serenading you to sleep. But if you want to fall asleep to Apple Music using your iPhone, your phone will keep on playing straight through to morning, which might not be exactly what you’re looking for. Thankfully, you can set a sleep timer by combining Apple Music with the Clock app.

2. Start the Clock app and tap the Timer tab at the bottom.
3. Set a timer for the length of time you want the music to play.
4. Tap When Timer Ends and scroll all the way down to tap Stop Playing. Then tap Set.

A lot of us love listening to our favorite music, audiobook or even a podcast on our smartphone to relax ourselves before going off to sleep. However, at times, this also results in us drifting to sleep while the audio is still playing. This can be a nuisance because the audio will disturb you later when you are in deep sleep, while draining your smartphone’s battery. So, if you have been wondering if you can set a sleep timer for music on your iPhone or Android smartphone, the answer is, yes you can! Here’s how you can set sleep timer on iOS and Android:
Set Sleep Timer on Android
If you happen to own an Android smartphone that does not run stock Android, chances are, your device manufacturer has implemented the sleep timer feature in their music player app. However, stock Android comes with Google Play Music, which does not pack in a sleep timer, unlike its iOS counterpart, which is a shame.
The good news is, there are a number of sleep timer apps on the Play Store that let you stop audio after a time from any app. You can just search for “sleep timer apps” on the Play Store and you should find various decent apps. However, the most popular out of the lot is Sleep Timer (Turn music off), which is available in a free version. So, here’s how to set up sleep timer for music on Android with the app:
1. After you have installed the app on your device, you can just play audio from any music player app, audiobook app or podcast app and set the timer through the circular icon in the app. Then, you can tap the “Start” button to start the timer. Once you start the timer, you will get the options to put your device to “Sleep Now” or “Stop” the timer.
2. You can also choose to play music directly from the app with the “Start & Player” button. Also, you can “Stop” or “Extend” the timer from the notification center as well.
When the timer runs out, the app puts your device to sleep, stopping the music and it’s not abrupt, instead the audio just fades off smoothly, which is a great touch.
Other than that, you can hit three-dot menu button in the top-right of the app and head over to “Settings” to check out options like shake to extend, set the default player to launch from the app and the extension length. Along with that, there are options to perform a specific action once the audio is stopped, waiting time after fade out and more. Moreover, the app includes integration with Tasker and if you have a rooted device, you can enable root functionality in “Advanced” to give it more control.
While the app works great, it will only mute some music players if you have a non-rooted device. However, we tested the app on different music players and it stopped the audio just fine. Also, if you don’t want a separate sleep timer, you can just install a third party music player with sleep timer support.
Set Sleep Timer on iPhone or iPad
Not a lot of people are aware of the fact that iOS natively packs-in the ability to set sleep timer on music. It’s pretty simple and here are the steps to turn it on:
1. Just open the Clock app on your iOS device and go to the “Timer” tab. Here, set the time, after which you want the music to stop playing. Then, hit the “When Timer Ends” option and scroll down below and select “Stop Playing“. Once done, tap on “Set“.
2. Once done, hit the Start button in the timer and play the music from the Music app or any other music, podcast or audiobook app. When the timer hits zero, the audio should stop playing automatically.
If you don’t like the native Clock app method on iOS, you can install a third party music player app that brings the sleep timer feature in the app. Most feature-rich music (Google Play Music, Pandora) and audiobook (Audible) apps bring the sleep timer feature, so you can go for one of the third party apps.
Ready to set sleep timer on audios in iPhone and Android?

The iPhone has two types of timers that can put your device to sleep after a designated amount of time. To stop your phone from overplaying your music or podcasts after you fall asleep, you can set a timer using the built-in Clock app. To modify the period of time before your iPhone enters sleep mode, use the Settings app.
Playback Sleep Timer
If you want your iPhone to automatically stop playing music or other media after a specific length of time, open the Clock app. Tap “Timer,” select a length of time using the wheel and then press “When Timer Ends.” Scroll to the bottom of the list, pick “Stop Playing” and tap “Set.” Press “Start” to begin the countdown. After the timer starts, you can quit the app and return to the Music, Podcasts or Videos app. The timer also works with some, but not all, media player apps from the App Store.
Automatic Screen Locking
Your iPhone automatically turns its screen off after a few minutes without input, equivalent to pressing the “Sleep/Wake” button on the top of the phone. You can change the length of time before sleep in the “General” tab of the Settings app. Tap “Auto-Lock” and pick a time between one and five minutes, or select “Never.”
Version Notice
Information in this article applies to iOS 7. It may vary slightly or significantly in other versions.
Earlier, dedicated music players like iPods were quite popular but they have now been replaced by smartphones. If you are a music listener, then you must be in a situation where the music turns into a sleep inducer, especially with the smooth and soulful music at night times. There may be several instances where you have woken up half asleep to turn the music off on your phone or the device’s battery has been completely drained by the time you wake up.
To address such issues, some of the music streaming applications like Spotify offer a feature to auto shut down the music after a specific amount of time. But the problem with this is that you need to be aware of your sleep cycle and know how much time it usually takes for you to fall asleep while listening to music. Nonetheless, it’s still a very useful feature.
In this step-by-step guide, we will show you how to set up a sleep timer on your smartphone using the Spotify app so that it automatically stops the music playback.
Setting up Spotify Sleep Timer on Android
Step 1: Open the Spotify application on your Android smartphone and play a song from the playlist of your choice.
Step 2: After that, tap on the music player to get a full-screen view of the current song.
Step 3: Now, tap on the ellipsis icon or the three-dots icon from the top-right corner.
Step 4: From the list of available options, choose the “Sleep Timer” option.
Step 5: You will now see a “Stop audio in” screen. Here, you can choose the approximate timeframe for the music to stop playing.
That’s it. Now, the music will stop playing at the end of your chosen timeframe. You also have an option to choose “End of Track” which will stop playing the music as soon as the currently playing song finishes.

Thank you Rasmus Abrahamsen for your contribution.
If you would like to share your thoughts with us, or have an alternative sleep timer Android app to recommend, please leave your feedback in our discussion forum.

Handy for those who like to doze off to a soundtrack.
IF YOU’RE THE kind of person who likes the idea of listening to music before you go asleep, you probably don’t like the idea of dozing off and leaving it on all night.
On the off chance you’re not familiar with it, there are ways to set a timer for it so the music turns off by itself.
If you have an iPhone, there’s a specific feature which allows you to do exactly that, and it works with any music streaming app like Spotify, Google Play Music, Apple Music and others.
To find it, go into the Clock app and go to the Timer page. Where it says Where timer ends“, tap on it and scroll all the way to the bottom until you see Stop Playing. Tap on that, set the length of time you want your music to play and press start.
When the timer ends, the music switches off too.
On Android, not many devices include this feature on their timer but a way around it is to download an app like Sleep Timer. It effectively does the same thing as iOS but it gently lowers the volume when it finishes and can also cover YouTube as well.
The free version does have ads, but if you want to pay for it, you can get rid of them and get a widget for it as well.

The Spotify sleep timer lets you ensure the music app turns off once you drift off to sleep. Android phones don’t have a universal sleep timer, so being able to turn one on through the Spotify app for music is a handy resource.
How to Set the Spotify Sleep Timer on Android
While the sleep timer is clearly meant for use during bed time, it can be used to stop Spotify music for any occasion. Here is how you turn it on.
Spotify added its sleep timer to music in 2019, but its Android sleep timer has worked for Spotify podcasts before and can still be used when listening to your favorite show at night.
Open Spotify. Once you choose an album or playlist and it starts playing, tap the three dots icon in the upper-right corner.
Tap Sleep Timer, then choose a duration. You can set it to stop audio after 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 1 hour. You can even set it to wait until the end of track.
You will see a confirmation, then returned to the track you’re currently listening to.
Reasons to Turn On the Spotify Sleep Timer
Anytime you open the Spotify app and turn on a mellow or relaxing playlist in the evening, you may want to also turn on the sleep timer, just in case.
Making sure the music stops after you’ve drifted off to sleep isn’t just for personal wellness so the noise doesn’t wake you up in the middle of the night. There are a few reasons it might be good to add a timer when listening to Spotify at night, including:
- Preserving battery life
- Preventing data use
- Getting quiet sleep through the night
By default, Spotify will continue to play music after your current playlist ends. Using the Sleep timer will limit noise to a certain amount of time.
How to Turn Off the Spotify Sleep Timer
After you’ve turned on the Spotify sleep timer, you may want to change the duration, or turn it off completely. This can be done in a similar fashion to setting it up, and will stop the app from turning music off or stop it after a different amount of time.
Tap the three dots icon in the upper-right corner when a song is playing.
The sleep timer will show a green moon and display how much time is left. Tap Sleep Timer.
Scroll down and tap Turn off timer to keep the music going.

When you click on the All,that means you want the app to work with all the Apps on your phone. Using all is the best
3.Once your timer had started, then you can go over and do whatever you wanna do and you can put your mind at rest that your phone battery is safe and the audio will automatically stop itself through the use of the sleep timer.

Something New
Spotify users who like using the app for long periods of time can now use the sleep timer function to set a limit and eventually end playback.
Many people listen to music, podcasts, and shows on Spotify to help themselves fall asleep or just want it playing in the background while doing everyday tasks. However, at some point, there will be a need for Spotify to stop playing, and for years, users have wanted to have some sort of timer function at their disposal to automate this. What a lot of users of the platform may not know is that Spotify does have a sleep timer. But, unfortunately, it’s only available via mobile app for now.
The Spotify sleep timer works for both music and podcast content. The way to get to the function for each audio type, though, is a bit different. Users have the option to set the sleep timer to activate in different minute increments that range between 5 minutes to an hour or have it set to quit once a music track or podcast episode that they love has reached the end.
According to Engadget, the Spotify sleep timer has been a highly requested user feature since 2012 and was only implemented for Android and iOS devices in 2019. Launch the Spotify app on either an iPhone or Android to access the sleep timer while listening to podcasts. Find the podcast episode to listen to by tapping the Search button, looking up the title or locating it on the Spotify content feed on the app’s main page. Next, hit the play button to start it. Once the episode is playing, tap on the podcast strip at the bottom to enlarge it into full screen. Next, tap on the Sleep timer button (moon-shaped icon) located on the right-most side of the playback controls. Choose a desired time limit for the podcast to keep playing until it turns off.
Use Spotify Sleep Timer For Music Playback
To utilize the timer to end an ongoing stream of their favorite music, users also need to launch the Spotify app on their devices and start playing a song. It can be a song from a playlist or an album. Do note that picking a single song through Search will prompt Spotify to play a song radio based on it containing similar tunes. Tap on the song strip at the bottom to enlarge it into full screen. Next, tap the three-dot icon at the top-right corner of the page, scroll down, and hit ‘Sleep timer.‘ Choose a time limit for the audio to stop at.
The Spotify sleep timer is a handy tool for audio listeners who have a particular way of playing songs and regularly use the platform as a means to zone out. Users will know if it is enabled when the moon-shaped icon is green, and it can be turned off at any time following the same process for either audio type and picking “Turn off timer” from the list of time limits. To date, there is currently no other way to set the sleep timer for longer than 60 minutes. Unfortunately, while the feature is currently only available through the Android and iOS mobile apps, it doesn’t seem to be available for Spotify’s web player. There is a silver lining for computer app listeners, though—there is an active community request for the function to be brought to the desktop version of Spotify that has reached the internal teams of the company.
With the sleep timer in Spotify, you can stop the music from playing after a predefined time period has passed. We’ll show you how to configure and use this feature on your iPhone, iPad, and Android phones.

If you’d like Spotify to stop playing the music after the current music track has finished playing, choose “End of Track.”

Get some shut-eye without draining your juice
As devices become smarter, they offer greater automation of activities. Those with iPhones can now doze off with peace of mind knowing their sleep timer can prevent Apple Music from draining their phone’s battery.
v app or the one in Spotify, there are elegant ways around it. Learn how to set a sleep timer across your Apple devices.
The Usefulness of a Sleep Timer
There are many reasons why one would want to take advantage of a sleep timer. For example, if you are listening to an audiobook, you wouldn’t want to wake up with a couple of chapters skipped. Even if you use audiobooks to lull you into sleep, waking up shortly after because the voice actor changed their voice tone is undoubtedly something to be avoided.
Also, sleep timers help prolong your phone’s battery life. Moreover, you may want to reduce needless bandwidth wastage.
Where to Find Your iPhone’s Native Sleep Timer
Ever since iOS 7, iPhones have had an in-built sleep timer. However, it is not that obvious to find as it is buried within another app — the Clock app. While you could download and install a dedicated third-party sleep timer, there are benefits to using the default one.
Outside of saving up on storage space, you can hide the built-in Clock app’s screen while it performs its function. The integrated sleep timer keeps running as a background process.
How to Set Up the Apple Music Sleep Timer
Start the process by opening the Clock app. You can find the app using these two methods:
- Using the Control Center: If you have iPhone X and later models, you can open the Control Center by swiping down from the upper right. For older models, swipe up from the screen’s bottom and tap on the Clock app’s icon.
- Alternatively, you can find the Clock app from the App Library.
Once you launch the Clock app, you will see Timer in the bottom right area. Tap on it.
Here, you have the following choices:
- Duration of the timer. Save the duration by tapping on When Timer Ends.
- Within When Timer Ends tap on the Stop Playing condition.
- Tap on Set to confirm the choices.
When you play Apple Music songs or other content from other apps, it will automatically stop playing when the timer ends.
Automate Your Sleep Timer Routine With the Shortcuts App
If you know your daily routines well, there is an alternative way to set up the sleep timer. This way, its function will be active during specified periods of the day without manually setting it up.
- To start, first, open the Shortcuts app.
- At the bottom corner of the Shortcuts app, tap on Automation.
- If you are new to the app, tap on the blue button Create Personal Automation. If you have used it before, tap on the Plus (+) button at the top-right area. Then tap on the Create Personal Automation button again.
- Under New Automation, first select the Time of Day for when to pause Apple Music. When done, tap on Next.
- Select Add Action. You can search for the one you want. In this case, we want pause, so type it in the search bar.
- From the search results, tap on the red Play/Pause button.
- Select the Pause from the bottom menu, so it is check-marked.
- Conclude the automation set up by tapping on Next and disable Ask Before Running.
This way, the Shortcuts app will run automatically during that time without bothering you to ask permission before running.
Take a Nap Without Worries
You can use your iPhone as a sleep-inducing device with both methods — Shortcuts app automation and directly from the Clock app. Now a shift in tone will not disrupt your sleep or gobble up your bandwidth needlessly.
Knowing Apple, it will likely implement a more convenient and intuitive solution within Apple Music itself. But in the meantime, these methods will suffice. Lastly, you can explore the Shortcuts app further to automate a range of activities.
