How to try the macos mojave beta right now

Apple has released the first public beta of macOS Mojave, the next major version of its Mac operating system due to launch in the fall. The availability of the public beta means Mac users don’t need to be part of the Apple Developer Program to be able to download and test the software. This article shows you how it’s done.

Before continuing, a word of warning: We don’t recommend installing the macOS Mojave Public Beta on your main Mac. The stability of beta software cannot be guaranteed, as it often contains bugs and issues that have yet to be ironed out, so you’re better off using a test machine to avoid any potential data loss.

macOS Mojave is a major update that introduces a range of new features like a Dark Mode, Desktop and Finder improvements, new apps, and a revamped Mac App Store, but not every Mac that can run macOS High Sierra will run macOS Mojave. The full list of compatible Mac models is as follows:

• MacBook (Early 2015 or newer)
• MacBook Air (Mid 2012 or newer)
• MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 or newer)
• Mac mini (Late 2012 or newer)
• iMac (Late 2012 or newer)
• iMac Pro (2017)
• Mac Pro (Late 2013, plus mid 2010 and mid 2012 models with recommended Metal-capable GPU)

Bear in mind that if you decide you want to revert back to your previous setup after testing the Mojave beta, you will need to erase the beta partition and perform a new macOS High Sierra installation.

Enroll in the Apple Beta Software Program

To install the macOS Mojave public beta, you need to enroll your Mac in the free Apple Beta Software Program.

Visit the Apple Beta Software Program website in a browser on your Mac.

Download the macOS Mojave Public Beta

After enrolling in the Apple Beta Software Program, you need to grab the profile installer and run it on your Mac. Here’s how:

In the same Enroll Your Devices section on the beta site’s Mac tab, click the profile button under where it says Download macOS Mojave public beta access utility, and wait for the file to download.

Install the macOS Mojave Public Beta

If the macOS Mojave installer doesn’t automatically open upon restart, launch it from your Applications folder using the Finder.

Click Continue at the bottom of the installer.

Betas are going to come with their fair share of problems, especially developer betas. Public betas are supposed to be significantly more stable, but still not perfect. If you’re trying to download or install a developer or public beta of macOS Mojave and are experiencing issues, here are some things you can do to help fix the problem.

Apple occasionally offers updates to iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as closed developer previews or public betas. While the betas contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that can prevent the normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not intended for everyday use on a primary device. That’s why we strongly recommend staying away from developer previews unless you need them for software development, and using the public betas with caution. If you depend on your devices, wait for the final release.

Back up your Mac

By the time you’re reading this, it may be too late to remind you to back up your Mac before you start downloading a beta, but I’m going to anyway.

Back up your Mac.

Before you try downloading or installing any beta (or any standard update), you should always make a fresh backup. If everything freezes and crashes and your screen turns purple, that fresh backup will be your saving grace.

I can’t download the macOS Mojave beta

If you know that you already have a beta profile installed on your Mac, but when you try to download the macOS Mojave beta, you get the message, “You must enroll your Mac to download the beta,” The first thing you should do is un-enroll and then re-enroll your Mac. It’s a fairly simple process that shouldn’t take too long.

1. Click on the Apple icon in the far left of your Menu Bar.
2. Click on System Preferences.
3. Click on App Store.
4. Click on Change next to Your computer is set to receive beta software updates.
5. Click on Do Not Show Beta Software Updates.
6. Restart your Mac.

This will remove the Developer Beta Access Utility from your Mac, so you can then start over from scratch.

The macOS Mojave beta freezes during installation

So you’ve successfully downloaded the beta, but during the installation process, it just hangs, rainbow ball a-spinnin’. This is probably the most common problem when getting a beta onto your Mac. There are a couple of reasons the installation might not work and a couple of things you can try.

• Make sure you’re connected to the internet. Though the software is already on your computer at this point (assuming the download was successful), you may need to boot your Mac in Recovery Mode, which does require internet access.
• If the download hangs, try a basic restart. Then, try installing again.
• If, after restarting and re-downloading, the download still hangs, delete the downloaded profile and re-download it from Apple’s beta downloads page and try reinstalling again.
• If, after the attempts I’ve just mentioned don’t work, check your hard drive for issues. Restart your Mac in Recovery Mode and use Disk Utility to run a diagnostic. Sometimes, just the act of running a diagnostic fixes the problem and the installation will work.

iCloud is not syncing properly

Once you’ve successfully downloaded and installed macOS Mojave, you may come across issues with the build itself. That’s not abnormal. This is, after all, a beta. For glitches, borks, and things generally not working, the first thing you should do is file a Radar so Apple knows of its existence and can fix it in the next build.

A common problem that sometimes happens when installing a beta is that iCloud doesn’t properly sync with either your devices running the current operating system or devices running betas.

If one or more of your programs that normally sync with iCloud isn’t syncing, my first suggestion is to give it a little time. I’ve noticed that after a few days, things seem to catch up and my iCloud content eventually syncs up.

If, after a week, iCloud is still not syncing, try logging out of iCloud on your Mac and logging back in.

1. Click on the Apple icon in the far left of your Menu Bar.
2. Click on System Preferences.
3. Click on iCloud.
4. Click on Sign out.

After you’ve successfully signed out of iCloud, sign back in.

If, after waiting and then signing out and signing back into iCloud on your Mac, nothing iCloud-related seems to be syncing properly, you can trash the clouddocs file to trigger a redownload of iCloud Drive files.

Don’t forget to back up your Mac before following the steps below!

1. Click on your desktop to select Finder.
2. Hold down Shift + Command + G on your keyboard to launch the Go To Folder window.
3. Select the folder CloudDocs.
4. Move CloudDocs to the trash.

You’ll also want to quit the cloudd and bird processes from Activity Monitor.

1. Launch Activity Monitor on your Mac.
2. Search for cloudd.
3. Select the cloudd process.
4. Click on the X button in the upper left corner of Activity Monitor.
5. Click on Quit.
6. Search for bird.
7. Select the bird process.
8. Click on the X button in the upper left corner of Activity Monitor.
9. Click on Quit.

Note: This may eat up a lot of your internet download speeds and take a long time, so be patient.

Messages in iCloud not syncing

Now that Apple has added iCloud syncing to iMessages, there’s an additional worry to consider. You can disable and then re-enable, and finally sync your Messages in iCloud to try to reboot the syncing process.

Apple-built apps are not working properly

Even though Apple did the work to build apps that support the beta version of macOS Mojave, there is still a chance that something won’t work right. The most important thing to do is to file a Radar so Apple is aware of the issue and can fix it.

You can also try restarting your Mac. Sometimes a simple reboot will flush out glitches and get your system working properly again.

Third-party apps are not working

If your favorite third-party app isn’t supported in the beta of macOS Mojave, that doesn’t mean it won’t be supported when the final build launches publicly. To be sure your favorite apps will eventually work on macOS Mojave this fall, contact the developers and let them know how much you love it and hope to keep using it for years to come. They’ll be glad to hear from you and it will encourage them to get the lead out and update as soon as possible.

1. On your Mac, launch Safari and go to the following URL: beta.apple.com

2. Sign in to the website using your Apple ID, the very same one which you are using on your Mac.

3. Now click on Enroll Your Devices at the very top.

4. Click on the giant blue ‘Download the macOS Public Beta Access Utility.’

5. Run the app and install it by following the on-screen instructions.

6. Once the Access Utility is done installing, the Mac App Store will launch and you’ll see the macOS Mojave Public Beta ready for download.

The entire download will take quite a bit of time so be patient when is running its course. I would recommend that you refrain yourself from using your Mac at this point so that everything goes as smoothly as possible. Also, make sure that you’ve saved all your pending work before you start the download as a restart will be required to install macOS Mojave Public Beta.

Your Mac will restart several times during the installation after which you can proceed with things normally. The great thing about Public Betas is that everything happens over the air which means that you will not lose your files or settings at all after the installation is complete.

Don’t forget to back up your data, just in case.

If you don’t want to wait until this fall to download and install macOS Mojave on your Mac, you’re in luck. On Tuesday, Apple released the first macOS Mojave public beta. Here’s how you can install the update right now.

The Apple Beta Software Program allows you to install pre-release versions of the software coming this fall for iOS devices, Macs, and Apple TV, respectively. Through this program, non-developers can try these updates for free and offer Apple feedback.

The feedback you provide on quality and usability helps us identify issues, fix them, and make Apple software even better. Please note that since the public beta software has not yet been commercially released by Apple, it may contain errors or inaccuracies and may not function as well as commercially released software. Be sure to back up your iOS device with iTunes and your Mac using Time Machine before installing beta software. Since Apple TV purchases and data are stored in the cloud, there’s no need to back up your Apple TV. Install the beta software only on non-production devices that are not business critical. We strongly recommend installing on a secondary system or device, or on a secondary partition on your Mac.

Announced on June 4, alongside iOS 12, tvOS 12, and watchOS 5, macOS Mojave includes lots of new features, including a Dark Mode, macOS versions of the iOS News, Home, Stocks, and Voice Memos, and much more.

To install macOS Mojave on your Mac right now, you’ll first have to become a member of the Beta Software Program by following this link. You’ll be required to fill out some different information, including your Apple ID.

Once you do, you’ll have to enroll each Mac you wish to install Mojave on in the beta program. Soon after, you’ll find the macOS Mojave update in the Mac App Store just like you would other macOS updates.

Keep in mind, this is beta software. Therefore, it’s wise to backup your data before moving forward. Better still, partition your Mac and install the update elsewhere on your computer.

If you’re willing to wait, the first official version of macOS Mojave should arrive this September or October.

One of the most significant announcements at Apple’s WWDC 2018 developer conference was the next iteration of macOS, which has been dubbed macOS Mojave (pronounced mo-hah-vee). I really like the new name but the upcoming features, including dark mode, the revamped app store, and desktop stacks make it even more exciting.

Apple released the first developer beta for macOS Mojave (macOS 10.14) when the keynote came to a close and you can try it out right away. Here are the steps you need to follow to download and install macOS Mojave beta on any of your Mac computers:

Devices Compatible with macOS Mojave

While Apple did boast about devices compatible with iOS 12, the company did not talk about what all generations or variants of Mac will support macOS Mojave. Apple only said that it will support computers from mid-2012 or later, including 2010 and 2012 Mac Pro models with recommended Metal-capable graphics cards

• MacBook Air (mid-2012 or newer)
• MacBook Pro (mid-2012 or newer)
• Mac Mini (late-2012 or newer)
• iMac (late-2012 or newer)
• iMac Pro (2017)

Method 1: Install macOS Mojave via OTA Update

You will obviously need an Apple developer account ($99 a year) to download the update, so I believe you’d have got that sorted out if you are interested in getting the latest software. Here are the steps you will need to follow to install macOS beta via OTA update:

Note : Remember that all beta software has some bugs which may interfere with regular usage, so do keep that in mind before proceeding.

1. First, navigate to the download page of Apple’s Developer website and scroll down to find the macOS Mojave 10.14 beta. Tap the “Download” button next to it to download the .dmg utility file.

2. Open the downloaded file, named macOS Developer Beta Access Utilit.dmg, and double-click the DeveloperBetaAccessUtility.pkg to run the installer.

3. Once the installer performs the download, the Mac App Store will open and you can then click on the ‘download’ button under the macOS logo to start the download and installation process.

4. Once the download is complete, your Mac will restart and you’ll then be prompted to log back into your Apple account to start using the developer beta.

Method 2: Clean Install macOS Mojave Via USB

While installing the macOS Mojave beta via an OTA update method is the most common way to go, there’s a possibility that you might want to hit refresh on your Mac system. It means you are ready to sacrifice all your data and start anew. So, here are the steps you need to follow for a clean install:

1. First, you need a USB drive (preferably with 16GB storage). You’ll need to format the USB drive via Disk Utility using the ‘Erase’ option, where you have to keep its name and format unchanged.

2. You’ll then need the same OTA image of the macOS Mojave beta that you downloaded from the Mac App Store. Remember, you don’t need to install the image but instead, keep the files in the Applications folder.

3. This is the most important step – you now need to open Terminal and type in the command shown underneath to copy macOS Mojave onto the USB drive.

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ 10.13\ — volume /Volumes/Untitled –applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ 10.14\ Beta.app

4. You may be prompted to enter your Mac password, so just follow through and all your installation files will be moved to the USB drive.

5. Finally, restart your Mac and hold down the “Option” key to see a list of available drives and select the USB installer disk.

6. You will then see a familiar ‘Disk Utility’ window, which comes in handy for erasing your Mac’s main storage. It is a necessary step for a clean installation, which you can now complete by following the instructions on the screen.

Try Out macOS Mojave on Your Mac Computer

While we didn’t have high expectations from iOS 12, all the leaks and speculations were suggesting that macOS 10.14 will be a feature-rich update that we’ve been waiting for. Apple delivered us some of the most requested features, while simplifying and making everything else a little more handy for Mac users.
