The 64-bit version of Firefox can provide better performance than the 32-bit version. 64-bit Firefox requires a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or higher. To see if you have a 64-bit Windows version visit this Microsoft help page.
When you switch to the 64-bit version of Firefox, your Firefox user data (passwords, bookmarks, settings, add-ons, etc.) will not be removed.
Follow these steps to switch from 32-bit to 64-bit Firefox:
- Go to this Mozilla Firefox download page and select the Windows 64-bit installer.
- Download the Firefox Setup file and save it to your computer.
- Do not run the installer yet.
- Close Firefox. Click the Firefox menu and select Exit . Click the Firefox menu at the top of the screen and select Quit Firefox . Click the Firefox menu and select Quit .
- Remove the 32-bit version of Firefox. Open the Windows Start menu and click on Settings Control Panel . Open the System Programs panel, then select the Apps & features tab Programs and Features panel .
- Scroll down the list of apps programs until you find the Mozilla Firefox item that contains x86 in the name. Select it, and click Uninstall .
- Follow the prompts in the Uninstall Wizard to complete the removal of the 32-bit version.
- Run the Firefox Setup file you saved to your computer and follow the prompts to install the 64-bit version of Firefox.

Most web browsers are installed in Windows as 64-bit versions by default, Firefox being the exception. If you installed the default download of Firefox, you have the 32-bit version, not the 64-bit version, even if you’re running a 64-bit version of Windows.
Say you recently got a new Windows computer. After installing the 32-bit version of Firefox from the main page, you installed your favorite add-ons, restored your backed up bookmarks, and even set up multiple profiles for personal and work purposes. But, now you want to upgrade to the 64-bit version of Firefox for better performance. You could uninstall the 32-bit version and then install the 64-bit version, but doing so will remove your Firefox user data, such as saved passwords, bookmarks, settings, extensions, and themes.
You could back up your profile folders from the 32-bit version of Firefox and then restore them after uninstalling Firefox and installing the 64-bit version. But that’s a bit of a hassle, and there is an easier way.
NOTE: Firefox 64-bit can only be installed on 64-bit Windows. If you’re not sure which version of Windows you’re running, you can easily check. If you’re running 32-bit Windows, you cannot upgrade Firefox to 64-bit.
If you’re not sure if you’re running 32-bit or 64-bit Firefox, follow our procedures to find out.
If you’re running the 32-bit version of Firefox (and you’re running 64-bit Windows), visit this page on Mozilla’s website. Search for your language and click the Windows 64-bit “Download” link.
Close Firefox (all windows) if it’s running. Then, run the 64-bit Firefox installer you downloaded and follow the on-screen instructions to install it. The 32-bit version of Firefox on your PC will not be uninstalled.
Launch Firefox using the desktop shortcut or the shortcut on the Taskbar, if you pinned Firefox to the Taskbar.
Again, using our procedures for finding out which version of Firefox you’re running, you’ll discover that you’re now running the 64-bit version. And all your settings, bookmarks, extensions, themes, etc. have been preserved.
As we said, the 32-bit version of Firefox is still installed on your PC. When you upgraded Firefox to 64-bit, the Firefox entries in the Start menu list and the shortcuts on the desktop and Taskbar are replaced with calls to the 64-bit version of Firefox. You don’t need to do anything further, but if you want to uninstall the 32-bit version of Firefox, you can.
To do that, open the Control Panel and click “Uninstall a program” under the Programs category. Then find the Mozilla Firefox entry in the list with “(x86 en-US)” at the end. Be sure you don’t select the Mozilla Firefox entry with “(x64 en-US)” at the end, which is the 64-bit version you just installed.
If you decide you want to keep the 32-bit version of Firefox so you can run it sometimes, you can find the executable (.exe) file in the C:\Programs Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox directory.
If you want to run the 32-bit version of Firefox by default again, simply download the 32-bit version of Firefox, run it, and follow the on-screen instructions to install it. You can use the Start menu entry and the shortcuts on the desktop and Taskbar for Firefox to run the 32-bit version again.
There are a lot of ways to fix issues with your Firefox web browser, but reinstalling the browser is the best and easiest way out there to fix all issues at once and make faster than before.
Like other third-party web browsers, although reinstalling Mozilla Firefox browser for Windows operating system is easy, users don’t want to delete their saved passwords, bookmarks, browsing history, cookies, and other data while reinstalling Firefox on Windows.
The good thing is that you can reinstall Firefox on Windows 10 and earlier Windows versions without losing data.
As you likely know, in older versions of Firefox (v30 or before), there would be “Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations” option while uninstalling the Firefox. The uninstaller no longer displays this option but doesn’t delete the profile data.
The thing is that the Firefox uninstaller doesn’t delete data from your Firefox profile folder (which includes important data such as passwords, history, bookmarks, and cookies) and you need to manually delete the profile folder if you want to remove these data from your PC. When you re-install Firefox on the same Windows installation again, Firefox starts using the data from that profile folder. In short, you are not deleting Firefox profile data when you uninstall it.
Complete the given directions to reinstall Firefox on Windows 10 and earlier versions without losing data.
IMPORTANT: We have tested this method with Firefox v59 and works great. However, we cannot guarantee the same for later versions!
Just to be safe, we recommend you create a backup of Firefox profile folder to a safe location and restore the same folder if you find that something is missing after reinstalling Firefox (very very unlikely though).
You can find the profile folder by navigating to C:\Users\UserName\AppData\ Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox. Copy the Profiles folder to a safe location.
Reinstalling Firefox without losing data
Step 1: In the Start menu search field, type Appwiz.cpl and then press Enter key to open Programs and Features window.
Step 2: Right-click on Mozilla Firefox entry and then click Uninstall option.
Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the Firefox from your PC. As said earlier, uninstalling Firefox will not delete the Firefox profile folder containing your crucial data such as passwords, bookmarks, and history.
Step 3: Download a fresh copy of Firefox from Mozilla website. Run the installer. If you want to download the full setup, refer to our download Firefox offline installer guide.
Step 4: When you get the following screen, uncheck Restore default settings and remove old add-ons for optimal performance option.
Click Re-install button to complete the reinstall exercise.
You can now check if all your passwords, bookmarks, and other data are present now. All data should be there as you left before.
PC experts and software developers always recommend users to install a 64-bit type of a program on 64-bit Windows operating system. Although you might not see a dramatic performance improvement by upgrading 32-bit program to 64-bit, an x64 program will perform better than an x86 program on an x64 based computer.
Upgrade Firefox 32-bit to Firefox 64-bit
A large number of Mozilla Firefox users are not aware of the availability of Firefox 64-bit. The web installer of Firefox automatically downloads and installs the 32-bit Firefox even on a 64-bit Windows PC. Because of this, users have been running 32-bit Firefox on Windows 64-bit although the Firefox 64-bit has been out there for more than a year now.
A lot of users who want to upgrade 32-bit Firefox install to 64-bit don’t want to uninstall the 32-bit Firefox first and then install the 64-bit Firefox as doing so will remove saved passwords, bookmarks, and browsing history.
NOTE: Refer to our 3 ways to check if you are running 32 or 64-bit Firefox guide to make sure that you are running 32-bit Firefox before attempting to upgrade!
There are two ways to upgrade Firefox 32-bit to Firefox 64-bit on a Windows PC. The first method is to uninstall Firefox 32-bit and then install Firefox 64-bit by manually downloading Firefox 64-bit offline installer. The second method is for users who would like to upgrade to 64-bit without uninstalling the current Firefox 32-bit. Since the first method is easy and everyone knows about it, we are talking only about the second method in this article.
Upgrade Firefox 32-bit to 64-bit without reinstalling
Here is how to upgrade Firefox 32-bit install to Firefox 64-bit on a Windows PC.
Important: Firefox 64-bit cannot be installed on 32-bit Windows. Please make sure that you are running 64-bit Windows 10/8/7 (see how to check if you are running 32 or 64-bit Windows 10) before attempting to upgrade Firefox 32-bit to 64-bit.
Step 1: Head over to this page of Mozilla. Locate your language and click 64 Download link to begin downloading the full offline installer of Firefox 64-bit. Please note that 64-bit Firefox is also available for Linux. So, be sure to click 64 Download link for Windows.
Step 2: Close Firefox browser, if it’s running.
Step 3: Run the downloaded 64-bit Firefox offline installer and follow on-screen directions to get it installed. This will install Firefox 64-bit on your Windows 10 PC without uninstalling the old 32-bit install.
Step 4: Launch Firefox now using Start/taskbar search to launch Firefox 64-bit. Follow our directions in how to check if you are running 32 or 64-bit Firefox guide to make sure that you have successfully upgraded Firefox 32-bit to 64-bit. All the best!
NOTE: When you install Firefox x64 bit, it doesn’t remove Firefox 32-bit from your PC but replaces the Firefox entry in the Start menu list. So, when you launch Firefox using Start menu or taskbar search, Windows 10 launches Firefox 64-bit instead of 32-bit. If for some reason, you want to use Firefox 32-bit, you can find under C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox directory.
To downgrade to Firefox 32-bit, please download Firefox 32-bit offline installer (using the above mentioned link/page), run the installer, and follow simple on-screen instructions. Simple as that!
I want to uninstall FF 64-bit and install FF 32-bit (because I want to use addons, like ADBlocker Plus, and they won’t install – or worse install but not show up – in FF 64-bit).
2) I click “Firefox for Other Platforms and Languages” and I get a dialog where I click “Windows 32-bit”. I get “Firefox Installer.exe”.
3) I close and uninstall FF 64-bit from Control Panel.
4) I run that exe and after the install process I do have FF again, but it’s still the 64-bit version. It has even remembered my session and bookmarks and I am even still logged in to sites I was logged in to before uninstalling (those for which I had asked to be kept logged in of course).
I tried that same process many times, by downloading FF with FF itself and with other browsers. I have even unistalled a “Mozilla Maintenance Service” I found installed in Control Panel, in case it was it that was forcing the wrong version to be installed, but no.
I also tried to click “Available languages” in the dialog at point 2, clicked on “Download” at row “English (British)” and column “Windows” (NOT the “Windows 64-bit” at its right), that gave me “Firefox Setup 55.0.2.exe”, but this installer too produces the same result (I end up with the 64-bit version again).
No error messages ever appear at any point.
I simply can’t seem to be able to replace FF 64-bit with FF 32-bit. I really don’t understand what I am doing wrong. Any ideas ?
Chosen solution
I tried again just now, clicking the same in that “platforms and languages download page” (that is, clicking the column “Windows”, NOT the “Windows 64-bit” at its right), and now that gives me a new version, which apparently became available in the meantime, that is “Firefox Setup 55.0.3.exe”, and this time when I do exactly the same but with that new installer, I do get FF32.
However, I am sure that even before, in that “platforms and languages download page”, I was clicking the column “Windows”, NOT the “Windows 64-bit” at its right, and I was getting “Firefox Setup 55.0.2.exe” resulting in FF64.

Only 1.7% of all Firefox users on Windows ran a 64-bit version of the browser in 2016 while the majority of users ran a 32-bit version of Firefox according to Mozilla. One core reason for that was that Mozilla pushed the 32-bit version of Firefox on the main download page and not the 64-bit version.
Firefox users who wanted to download and use a 64-bit version of the browser on Windows needed to search for it actively. That was the main reason why only 1.7% ran a 64-bit version of Firefox at the time.
The situation has changed significantly in recent time. Mozilla released a 64-bit version of the Firefox web browser for Windows last year and started to promote it more actively in recent time.
The main Firefox Stable download page on the Mozilla website offers 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the browser with 64-bit the default nowadays.
Is your Firefox 32-bit or 64-bit?
32-bit versions of Firefox run on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. 64-bit versions on the other hand only on 64-bit Windows versions.
Mozilla revealed recently that more than 30% of Firefox installations are on 32-bit versions of Windows.
You have a couple of options to find out if you are running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Firefox. If you have not modified the user agent of the browser, you may load about:support in the browser’s address bar and check the user agent string.
If it includes Win64 and/or x64 it is a 64-bit version. Please note that Wow64 is displayed if you run a 32-bit version of Firefox on a 64-bit system.
You may check the Windows Task Manager instead if you prefer that. Windows display (32 bit) next to 32-bit processes so that you know right away when you open it using Ctrl-Shift-Esc.
So why upgrade to 64-bit Firefox?
Before we take a look at how to upgrade from a 32-bit version of Firefox to a 64-bit version, it is important to understand why upgrading makes sense (or not).
Firefox 32-bit and 64-bit offer the same browsing functionality for the most part. 64-bit versions were limited when it came to support for plugins — only Flash and Silverlight are supported. If you depend on other plugins, say Java or Unity, you could not upgrade in the past; this changed with Mozilla’s decision to end support for NPAPI plugins in the Firefox browser.
Firefox users could run 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Firefox side by side on the system to overcome the limitation in the past but since NPAPI support is not really an option anymore, plugin support is no longer part of the equation when it comes to selecting between 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Firefox browser.
The main benefit of running a 64-bit application is that it is not limited to using 4 GiB of memory. If you have more than 4 GiB of physical memory installed, Firefox may benefit from the extra RAM especially if you throw lots of tabs at it.
This is not the case if you just run a tab or two in the browser, but if you run dozens or hundreds, lots of extensions, or run memory hungry apps, then you will benefit from the extra memory surely.
Upgrade 32-bit Firefox to 64-bit
Mozilla started to migrate eligible 32-bit copies of Firefox on Windows to 64-bit copies automatically when Firefox 56 was released in mid 2017.
Good news is that the upgrading is as easy as installing Firefox anew on the operating system. I suggest you back up profile data using MozBackup or Febe, or a comparable solution. This enables you to go back should things go wrong during the process.
Next step is to download the 64-bit version of Firefox that you plan on using.
Firefox 64-bit Downloads
To upgrade, simply run the installer and follow the instructions. You may run the newly installed 64-bit version of Firefox and it will pick up the default user profile automatically.
You may downgrade to 32-bit at any time in the future by following the instructions again. Just make sure you download a 32-bit copy of Firefox that time as you need to install it.
Please note that you will end up with two copies of Firefox installed on your system. A 32-bit version and a 64-bit version. Once you have made sure that the 64-bit version works, you may remove the 32-bit version of Firefox from the system.
I want to install Office 2016 64 bit to my PC, but my PC already had the 32 bit version. I have the offline installer for the 64 bit version.
1. Can I just install the 64 bit version without uninstalling the 32 bit version first?
2. Do I have to re-enter the activation key?
3. Do I have to customize the Office again from the beginning (like inserting the words in AutoCorrect options, edit the word list in Custom Dictionaries, etc)?
Thanks in advance.

You must uninstall the 32bit version of Office, before you install the 64bit version, they cannot co-exist on the same PC
No, you will not need you product key again if Office is linked to your Microsoft Account
Go to and if you’re not already signed in, select Sign in
Locate your Office 2016 licence on that page and then just click Install
Yes you will need to customize Office again . . .

Thank you for the answers. So, I can’t just overwrite the 32 bit with the 64 bit version? I thought I can just “upgrade” it by overwrite it. It’s the same Office 2016 though, just not the same bit version. But I guess you’re right, I’ll uninstall the 32 bit first.
Does it have to be linked to my Microsoft account? Is the key not stored in the registry?
Obviously, the third answer has become the most painful one to read, since I have to take notes on all customizations I’ve ever done to the 32 bit version of my Office 2016 before I install the 64 bit version. I just don’t want to do those customizations again once I reinstall the 64 bit version. Is it really no other way for this? Thanks for the thoughts.

I am sorry, it is not possible to just upgrade form the 32bit to the 64bit version, because they are totally different and installed into different locations . . .
If you log into Office.com, did you not find your licence listed thee?

No you cannot “upgrade” from 32 to 64 bit Office. The Office installer actually checks and blocks the install until you uninstall all 32 bit Office program code.
The problem is that MS was lazy / sloppy about how the 64 bit program code is located. It puts the files in the same location as 32 bit program, with the same file names. So, if you were able to mix 32 and 64 bit installations, programs would crash when they tried to read a program file in the “wrong” bit.
All “Office” programs since 2016 (and partially in 2013) have been primarily associated with your email account. They now only use the computer ID to track the number of times/places the program is currently installed, to make us comply with limit on number of times the license allows the program to be concurrently running. The product key was never actually stored in the Windows Registry, it was stored in a separate file for all product keys (if you are interested, MS uses a file called TOKENS.DAT to store encrypted product activation keys ).
Not to worry about customizations. When you do a “normal” uninstall, from the “Control Panel” or “Settings” dialogs, your customizations are left in place to be picked up by the next Office installation. Bit type and version do not matter. The Office programs have been designed this way “since the beginning of time” because from the start, “uninstall and re-install” was one of the primary “trouble shooting” steps that MS Support told users to do.
If you use the “uninstall” tool the MS provides as a download, then YES, you will lose your customizations. It deletes ALL Office related program files and registry settings.
