It’s no secret that one of the most popular destinations in the world for the most highly anticipated night out of the year – New Year’s Eve – is New York City. It’s all about the sights, sounds, and unique entertainment that this city has to offer—centered, of course, on the Times Square Ball. When you gather in Midtown to watch the Ball Drop, you’re part of a long, rich history of partying!
In 1903, The New York Times newspaper was about to open their new headquarters, the city’s second tallest building, in what was then known as Longacre Square. The paper’s owner, Adolph Ochs, decided to commemorate their opening with a midnight fireworks show on the roof of the building on December 31, 1903. After four years of New Year’s Eve fireworks celebrations, Ochs wanted a bigger spectacle at the building to draw more attention to the newly-renamed Times Square. An electrician was hired to construct a lighted Ball to be lowered from the flagpole on the roof of One Times Square. The iron Ball was only 5 feet in diameter! The very first drop was on New Year’s Eve 1907, one second after midnight. Though the Times would later move its headquarters, the New Year’s Eve celebration at One Times Square remains a focal celebration for the world.
The Ball has gone through some major transformations in its 100-plus years of partying. The original Ball was replaced in 1920 with a 5-foot, 400-pound iron Ball. This Ball lasted to 1995, when a third Ball debuted, adding rhinestones and a computerized lighting system featuring strobe lights. For the arrival of the new millennium, an entirely new Ball was constructed. Weighing 1,070 pounds and measuring 6 feet in diameter, the fourth ball was covered with 504 Waterford Crystal triangles illuminated with 168 halogen bulbs outside. Internally, 432 bulbs of clear, red, blue, green and yellow colors along with strobe lights and spinning mirrors lit up the night. It was retired on December 31, 2006 newly rigged with light-emitting diodes.
In honor of the Ball Drop’s 100th anniversary, a fifth design debuted New Year’s Eve 2008. Manufactured again by Waterford Crystal with a diameter of 6 feet, weighing 1,212 pounds, it used LEDs, computerized lighting pattern, and can produce over 16.7 million colors, but only consumes the electricity of 10 toasters! The 2008 Ball was only used once— a sixth new Ball debuted on New Year’s Eve 2009 and is still in use.
Today’s Ball is 12 feet in diameter, weighing 11,875 pounds. While retaining the 2008 design, this Ball was rebuilt double its previous size. To accommodate this new Ball, the flagpole was also enlarged, now rising 475 feet above the street. It remains atop One Times Square year-round, reminding the people below of the most exciting night of the year, and building the anticipation. Where will you be this New Year’s Eve? Sling TV
Sling TV is an excellent choice for those looking to save a few bucks on their live streaming subscriptions, but that reduced price does cost you in channel options. Sling is regularly $25 per month, but it is currently on sale for $15 per month. The downside is that the only channel that will be streaming the ball drop will be CNN, but you can save some money while watching 2019 disappear.
AT&T WatchTV
Another affordable choice for you is AT&T WatchTV, which has another slim selection of channels to choose from. For $15 per month, you’ll get access to entertainment channels, such as AMC and TVLand. Four, three, two, one… it’s (almost) New Year’s Eve! Which means it’s also almost time for the famous New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in New York City’s Times Square.
Like most celebrations around the world, this year’s ball drop will look different, but “one thing that will never change is the ticking of time and the arrival of a New Year at midnight on December 31st,” said Tim Tompkins, President of the Times Square Alliance, which co-produces the annual event with Countdown Entertainment.
To ensure everyone can enjoy the ball drop tradition safely, this year’s celebration will be broadcast-only, which means no crowds gathering together in Times Square. Performances and celebrations are still planned—all at a safe distance—for viewers to enjoy virtually (perfect for an at-home toast with New Year’s Eve cocktails and music to ring in 2021).

Times Square Webcast
Times Square New Year’s Eve host Jonathan Bennett and other correspondents will provide a live, commercial-free, webcast of the festivities leading up to the Ball Drop at midnight including the lighting and raising of the New Year’s Eve Ball at 6 p.m. EST, hourly countdowns, live musical performances. The Ball
Every year the Waterford Crystal Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball welcomes in the New Year as people around the world look on. The Ball is covered with 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles of various sizes and weighs 11,875 pounds.

It’s almost New Year’s Eve, which means it’s time to mix up a fabulous champagne cocktail and get your noisemakers ready. Obviously, the ball drop will look different this year. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, it’s simply unsafe to have people gather in Times Square to watch the event. However — despite there being no crowds — there will be some live action in Times Square, and the ball will descend as usual. “One thing that will never change is the ticking of time and the arrival of a New Year at midnight on December 31st,” said Tim Tompkins, President of the Times Square Alliance, in a press release. “But this year there will be significantly new and enhanced virtual, visual and digital offerings to complement whatever limited live entertainment or experiences — still in development — will take place in Times Square.”
Fortunately, that means it’ll be even easier to watch the event from afar. If you have cable, you can tune in to one of the major broadcasts on ABC, FOX, NBC, or CNN. If you’ve cut the cord, you can still watch a commercial-free webcast on social media or on Times Square’s official website, TimesSquareNYC.org. With so many options, you should be able to stream the 2021 festivities on a range of devices, including Apple TV, Roku TV, Android TV, and Amazon Fire TV. You can also stream the 2021 New Year’s Eve ball drop on your laptop and connect it to your television using an HDMI cable or Apple AirPlay.

It airs on CNN at 8 p.m. ET; it can also be viewed on CNNgo on most devices.
- NBC’s New Year’s Eve 2021: Carson Daly hosts this NYE broadcast, which airs on NBC from 10 to 11 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. ET; it can also be viewed on the NBC app on most devices.

Networks’ NYE coverage typically begins as early as 8 p.m. ET on December 31, but the ball drop itself will begin at 11:59.

Typically, the major networks (channels like NBC, Fox, and ABC) air their own New Year’s Eve specials on December 31 leading up to the ball drop, but none have announced their specific coverage plans for ringing in 2021 yet.
Can I stream the New Year’s Eve ball drop?
Even if none of the TV networks air any New Year’s Eve coverage (which is unlikely), you won’t have to miss watching the ball drop to ring in 2021. You can live-stream the event from your computer or phone on the Times Square official website.
Who’s hosting?
Usually, viewers have an abundance of NYE coverage to choose from, including specials like Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest on ABC, NBC’s New Year’s Eve, and Fox’s New Year’s Eve With Steve Harvey. The glittering Times Square Ball has been descending along a pole to mark the passage of time on New Year’s Eve since 1907 turned to 1908, and its TV broadcast is one of the most enduring holiday traditions in the U.S. Here’s how you can stream the Times Square Ball drop this year.

One Times Square, the property where the Ball is located, is offering an augmented-reality app for Android, iPhone, and iPad that brings Times Square directly to wherever you are. If AR isn’t your thing, the app offers an online live stream with multiple feeds from Times Square and around the world, plus behind-the-scenes footage.
There’s also a more traditional live webcast from the Times Square website.
ABC’s long-running New Year’s Eve celebration, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, will return this year with host Ryan Seacrest broadcasting live from Times Square alongside actress and co-host Lucy Hale. Other hosts will check in from New Orleans (Pose‘s Billy Porter) and Los Angeles (pop singer Ciara), but the focus will be trained on Times Square as the ball drops.

Fox New Year’s Eve with Steve Harvey: Live From Times Square

What to expect: Steve Harvey returns to his hosting duties for this show, which remains in New York this year. Maria Menounos and football star Rob Gronkowski will co-host, and musical performers for the show include LL Cool J, DJ Z-Trip, Village People (which will attempt to break the record for world’s largest “YMCA” dance during their performance), The Chainsmokers, The Lumineers, Florida Georgia Line, the Backstreet Boys, Tyga, The Killers, and more.
