Barrington High School experienced great tragedy on January 25, 2023 as 17-year-old Marin Lacson met her untimely end. Renowned for her exuberant spirit, Marin was an integral part of their school community – actively taking part in both Chinese Immersion Program and lacrosse team activities. Transitioning from Countryside Elementary and Station Middle Schools she formed deep bonds with both peers and teachers leaving an indelible imprint in their lives.
At around 7:45 AM on a foggy Thursday morning near the Union Pacific Railroad tracks in Barrington, Marin was tragically hit and killed by an eastbound Metra train, leaving many shocked in her wake and leaving his community reeling with disbelief.
Community Reaction
Marin’s untimely death shocked and stunned the Barrington community. Metra Police Department, Barrington Fire Department and Barrington Police Department responded quickly only to be met with the heartbreaking confirmation of her demise. This incident caused significant delays on Metra UP-NW line and ultimately closed multiple intersections for an investigation.
Marin was loved and appreciated by her peers at school; Isabella Benton from her lacrosse team particularly remembered her fondly for her infectious personality and welcoming nature. Marin left an indelible mark on all who met her by spreading positivity and warmth wherever she went – making an indelible mark upon everyone she came into contact with at school.
Support for Students
In response to this tragedy, Dr. Craig Winkelman, Superintendent of Barrington School District 220 addressed the community. Emphasizing his district’s commitment to student support, Dr. Winkelman announced the deployment of additional counselors at Barrington High School as well as an adult support team which provides resources across all school buildings so students could process what had transpired and find comfort from it all.

Barrington High School has been profoundly touched by Marin’s passing, so efforts are underway to pay our respects and commemorate her contributions and positive impact. Both her lacrosse team and wider school community are exploring meaningful ways to commemorate and recognize Marin’s life and achievements.
Safety and Awareness
This incident has raised significant safety concerns regarding railroad crossings in low visibility conditions such as fog. Questions have been raised regarding the effectiveness of safety measures at these crossings as well as an increased awareness and vigilance towards them.

Barrington High School continues to mourn Marin’s passing while shifting their attention toward healing and moving forward. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the significance of community support and mental health resources; thus the school has pledged its commitment to remember her while providing greater support systems during crises for both students and staff alike.
