Martin’s family tragically revealed the Maine legend’s untimely death. Following a medical condition, he died on January 4, 2024, at the age of 86. Martin Engstrom Junior kept us informed about Mount Washington’s activities for 38 years.
Known to his devotees as “Marty on the Mountain,” Martin would offer meteorological updates from the summit of the tallest mountain in New England.
Anita Williams, the daughter of Martin, stated,
“I just lost my rock…now I have to be the rock.
I knew Marty like most people from the 38 years he reported the weather from Mount Washington…even though he wasn’t a weatherman”.
Marty was an engineer, not a weatherman, according to WMTW.
Actually, Engstrom’s job was to staff the WMTW transmitter on the highest hill in New England. He maintained the station’s transmission by operating the complex machinery.
In an interview, he talked about his favorite moments from the summit of the highest mountain in New England with WMTW, where he worked for 38 years.
When Marty was duly inducted into the Maine Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2019, I had the opportunity to meet him. He was humble, funny, loving and will be truly missed.
On April 28, Marty would have turned 87 years old. Five years ago, he lost his wife Rosa Lee. His family has just learned of this tragic news and will provide further information regarding services and locations for us to pay our respects to a man who spent many years in our lives.
During this trying moment, our thoughts are with his family and close friends.
