This means that “ will appear as “lifehacker.com” in the address bar, and the full URL is revealed only if you click it. You can even update to beta builds of Safari and stay on the bleeding edge of Apple’s browser. This menu is hidden by default, but you can enable it by going to Safari preferences again. Head over to the Advanced tab and check Show Develop menu in menu bar.

If you want to quickly check any web page’s code or pull some images from a website, you need to use the Show Page Source tool. Surprisingly, this is also hidden by default. You can fix that easily by enabling the Develop menu as described previously. Once you’ve done that, right-click on any web page to see the Show Page Source option.

Click the drop-down menu next to each website’s name and select Never Auto-Play to stop all videos from playing on their own. Alternatively, you can select Stop Media With Sound to allow videos to play, but on mute.
For those who hate auto-playing videos with a passion, the best course of action is to disable them across all sites. To do this, click the drop-down menu next to When visiting other websites, which is located below the right pane in the Websites tab of the preferences window. There, you can select Never Auto-Play.

These days many websites will keep asking for permission to use your precise location, camera, and microphone. You can quickly check which sites are doing this on Safari, and make sure that these permissions are granted only for websites that need access.
These options are in the same place as auto-play settings in Safari. Open Safari > Preferences and select the Websites tab. In the left pane, you can select Camera to check which sites are accessing your webcam. Click the drop-down menu next to any website’s name and select Deny to stop it from accessing your camera. Alternatively, you may disable camera access on all websites by selecting Deny next to the When visiting other websites option highlighted in the screenshot above.
Similarly, you can review other options in the left pane—Microphone, Screen Sharing, and Location—and deny permissions to sites you don’t want to have that access.

Autoplay videos are one of the most irritating things on the internet. Often, some sites play these autoplay videos with full sound blasting our ears as soon as we land on the webpage. Thankfully, modern browsers have some effective methods to block these autoplay videos. Here’s how you can stop autoplay videos in browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.
The most common culprits of autoplay videos are the new websites. For some reason, these news websites automatically play videos about interviews and/or article topics without user permission or intervention. Add to that, there will be no settings whatsoever to block or stop these videos. Not only this behavior is annoying but the autoplay videos consume a lot of data. This may not be a problem if you are on a broadband or Wi-Fi connection. However, when using mobile data, it will quickly become expensive.
If you consume a lot of news via these websites, then you might want to consider blocking autoplay videos on news websites.

Stop Autoplay Videos in Chrome
Chrome provides easy options to disable autoplay videos. However, those options are not available in the traditional settings page. Rather, you need to access the autoplay settings in Chrome via the Flags page.
Note: In latest versions of Chrome, Google removed the AutoPlay Policy flag.
- Open the Chrome browser.
- Type chrome://flags and press Enter to open the Flags page.
- Here, search for “Autoplay policy“.
- From the drop-down menu set Autoplay Policy to “Document user activation is required“.
- Click on the “Relaunch Now” button to restart the Chrome browser and apply the flag.
Chrome is still working on blocking the autoplay stuff and there is no clear cut way to outright disable them. However, with the above setting, you are forcing Chrome to stop autoplay videos on background pages. Those videos will only play when you are actively interacting with the web page.
If you want to, you can use extensions like Video Autoplay Blocker or HTML5 Autoplay Blocker. However, these extensions are not that reliable, at least for me, and may even block legitimate sites like YouTube.
Block Autoplay Videos in Firefox
Just like Google Chrome, Firefox also offers advanced options to block autoplay videos. All you have to do is set a flag.
- Open the Firefox browser.
- In the browser, type about:config in the address and press Enter to open the config page.
- If you see a warning message, click on the “I accept the risk” button. Don’t worry, we are not going to make any destructive changes.
- Type “media.autoplay.default” in the search bar.
- Double-click on the “media.autoplay.default” flag and enter one of the following values.
- 1 = Block all autoplay videos
- 2 = Let the browser ask your permission to play autoplay videos
Disable Autoplay Videos in Edge
Compared to Chrome and Firefox, Edge is much easier to configure for blocking autoplay videos.
- Open the Edge browser.
- Click on the menu icon appearing on the top right corner and select the “Settings” option.
- Got to the “Advanced” tab.
- One the right panel, select “Block” from the Media Audioplay section.
- Restart the browser to apply the settings.
From now on the autoplay videos are blocked in your browser.
Autoplaying videos are surely one of the biggest annoyances that you may run into on the Internet. They suck up bandwidth, may use CPU, and are distracting. If you add sound to the mix, they are one of the most annoying types of content that you encounter on the Internet.
Sites love them; they generate a lot of revenue for these sites if they are monetized. Users hate them, for the reasons mentioned above.
Google, the world’s largest advertising company, announced this year that it will do something about it. The company’s Chrome browser will block autoplaying media with sound unless the user explicitly permitted the site to play this type of media. On the advertisement side, Google plans to disable ads in Chrome on sites that use certain types of advertisement; Chrome will block advertisement on sites with auto-playing video ads with sound both on the desktop and on mobile.
Google’s main motivation for doing so is simple: it does not want users to use third-party adblockers anymore than they do already. It also wants users to keep being exposed to advertisement, and hopes that by blocking ads on sites with annoying types of advertisement, users won’t install a separate ad-blocker.

AutoplayStopper
AutoplayStopper is available for Chrome officially. The extension is developed by the author of the Firefox add-on FlashStopper. FlashStopper is a legacy add-on for Firefox that won’t be released as a WebExtension. It is end of life so to speak.
AutoplayStopper is not available for Firefox right now. It may work with Chrome Store Foxified though.
The extension supports Flash and HTML5 video autoplay blocking. It adds an icon to the browser’s toolbar that highlights if content on the active page has been blocked from playing automatically.
I tested the extension on various sites that play video content automatically and it worked on all of them. This does not necessarily mean that there won’t be any that slip by, but it worked really well in these cases: sites that play video content in sidebar, sites that load video ads before other content, video hosting sites.
You can still play the content; a click on play is all that is required to start the video.
A click on the extension icon displays options to disable the extension’s functionality for the active site, and to disable the functionality globally. You may disable autoplay blocking for Flash and HTML5 separately, and also allow autoplay for a session (which stops only the first autoplay for a site).
You can change the default behavior in the AutoplayStopper options. There you find options to change the default mode from disable autoplay to allow autoplay for HTML5 video content, and allow detection for Flash content to disable detection.
Exception management is integrated there as well. You can manage sites with exceptions, or add sites to the list of exceptions. Exceptions can have the status allow, block, session or undefined. The first two are most important when you add manual exceptions, as you can use it to whitelist or blacklist sites.
