What is the song from the Ceiling Challenge?
The Ceiling Challenge track is a song called Surround Sound by rapper JID featuring 21 Savage and Baby Tate.
It dropped in January 2022 as the lead single from JID’s third album The Forever Story and was produced by DJ Scheme, Christo, and Nuri.
The track contains a sample of Aretha Franklin’s One Step Ahead, a slow ballad that was released in 1965.
JID is a huge fan of the trend and wrote on Instagram: “This new trend has taken a new life of its own and this s**t is amazing.”
“Keep being creative in these videos, we are going to do something special for this moment very soon!!!” he continued.
Where the Ceiling Challenge originated
The viral challenge involves taping your phone to the ceiling and dancing along to the track while peering up at the camera.
It was started by a 17-year-old TikTok user from the Philippines called Josiah Lebante who says he’s an “asipiring filmmaker”.
In September, he shared a video where he stuck his phone to the ceiling using tape while at school and danced with fellow students.
The clip has had more than 24.9 million views and sparked the trend, which has now taken over social media.
JID’s Surround Sound is stuck in everyone’s heads. One person wrote on Twitter/X: “Surround sound been stuck in my head all day. Ceiling challenge everywhere.”
“I’m trying to fall back asleep but that damn Ceiling Challenge song stuck in my head,” said another.
TikTok user inspired by talented filmmaker
“Back in September while it was our lunch at school I told my classmates that I have a new idea for a TikTok video,” Josiah explained.
He was inspired by a talented filmmaker and photographer called Karl Shakur who is based in Kansas, USA.
His classmates laughed at him at first, but then decided to join in and the video went viral in just a few days.
“A month later, it became a trend not just here in the Philippines, but in the whole world,” he added in disbelief.
“I’m just happy that everyone is doing it and being so creative. That’s what my videos are all about, to inspire you guys to do more.”
