Monday night’s NBC prime time slot will be occupied by a brand-new drama, a crime thriller series. Jesse L. Martin plays the lead role in this Arika Lisanne Mittman-created investigative crime procedural, which centers on an eccentric behavioral sciences expert who becomes a consultant for a criminal investigation team.

The main character in The Irrational is Alec Baker, a well-known behavioral psychology professor with a unique perspective on human nature. He imparts expertise on several crucial matters involving corporations, governments, and law enforcement. However, a female suspect in domestic terror turns out to be on par with him, upending his entire world.

The boyfriend of a fashion influencer, a decorated soldier and senator’s son, has confessed to the crime, and Alec Mercer, a behavioral science professor, is called to investigate. Mercer thinks there’s more to the story than meets the eye.

This sums up the entire plot of the program, which is reminiscent of many previous series in which a weirdo with poor social skills solves a murder, such as Tim Roth’s Lie to Me and Bones. You are therefore free to see whether this is the kind of show you are looking for.

Recap

The title for the episode was “Lucky Charms.” This week’s episode of The Irrational sees the professor and his team—which now employs sister Kylie—investigate a possible cheating scheme at a Sin City poker event after a former student’s gaming troubles.

However, while they are gone, Marisa makes significant progress on the church bombing case, only to have it abruptly end in the last seconds of the show. A man named Ethan Steele (Curtis Lum, Siren) wins a big hand in a major poker event called the Royal Flush Rumble in Las Vegas. He tells his opponent, “Just got lucky, I guess.” As Alec and Kylie arrive at work, the phone rings.

This is Camille Lawson (Jocelyn Hudon, When Hope Calls), Alec’s former student who was soundly defeated in the tournament. She wants Alec to visit Las Vegas to confirm whether her suspicions about the guy who battered her are true. She persists despite his observation that security teams must be present to handle everything. With anxiety, he asks, “Camille, how much trouble are you in?”

She sounds a little afraid as she says, “Enough to call you.” She owes a shadowy, armed man a large sum of money, as we soon find out. Alec travels to Sin City with Kylie, Phoebe, and Rizwan. As Phoebe puts it, “Phoebe before Phoebe,” Camille was Alec’s previous chief research assistant, Phoebe informs Rizwan.

However, she left the program roughly 18 months ago and moved to Nevada. Alec approaches Ethan in a bar after Camille points him out, posing as a huge fan and book publisher.
