Geralt of Rivia is getting a makeover as CD Projekt Red is currently working on developing The Witcher 3 Next Gen upgrades. This time, there is a possibility that the developers are bringing in fan-made PC mods for the incoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S enhancement. They revealed the next-gen upgrades late last year but did not have enough details. But rest assured that The Witcher 3 next gen’s update is still on schedule to release in late 2021.

The Witcher 3

During the Fiscal Year 2020 conference call, the company announced its updated release plans. According to CD Projekt Red, the Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 are set to release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in the second half of this year. In a March 2021 “Strategy Update,” CDPR revealed more interesting details about the two franchises, including a planned change to a “parallel development” model, in which the studio’s various teams would produce Cyberpunk and Witcher ventures at the same time.

As it develops The Witcher 3‘s next-gen enhancements, CD Projekt Red is considering enlisting the assistance of the PC modding community. In a post earlier this week on Nexus Mods, a modder known as HalkHogan revealed as much, describing their recent absence from the site.

“The most important news is that I got an official message from CDPR about cooperation. While it’s not certain yet, it’s very likely that HDRP (HD Rework Project) will be included in the official next generation update. I will inform you what’s next.” – HalkHogan

HalkHogan’s HDRP mod directly targets the Witcher 3’s incoming graphics for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. This includes improved draw distance, higher-detailed textures, reworked materials, and shaders. As a result, it is reasonable to assume that CD Projekt Red’s own work on next-gen updates would benefit from these and other improvements.

What do you think of this move by CDPR in possibly including fan-based mods? Let me know in the comments!
