People interested in health care, science or research had the chance to participate in a “mini medical school” Monday night in Davenport at a free event sponsored by University of Iowa Healthcare.

The class at Regus, on the 4600 block of East 53rd Street, focused on the connection between obesity and cancer, such as how weight affects a person’s symptoms and prognosis.

“If they can understand those breakthroughs and what is happening, they are more informed consumers,” said Jackie Kleppe, director of outreach and engagement for University of Iowa Healthcare. Patients will know what to ask their doctor and be more informed to make the best decisions for their health care, she said.

The university will host more “mini medical school” sessions in the future.
