Joyner once said that the night before he tried out for the part of Barney, he had a dream. Barney passed out in the dream, and Joyner had to give him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. And on the day of the audition, Joyner stopped at a red light and saw a Southwest Airlines ad above him. “Breathe life into your vacation,” it said. Joyner decided, “I’m going on vacation if I can give this character life.”
Joyner first tried out for the part in 1991, replacing David Voss, who had played Barney’s original costume actor. Joyner was hired as a back-up performer at first, but she took over the role when the actress who was supposed to play the part had trouble staying in costume for long periods of time.
Joyner was first hired to play Barney in two home videos for Barney & The Backyard Gang. He also played Barney for the first six seasons of the TV show Barney & Friends and in live shows.
