The Walking Dead/Fear the Walking Dead crossover has finally been announced. Last night on Talking Dead, it was revealed that Morgan will be the one to crossover, a move that many, including myself, found somewhat surprising. The Twitter trolls were out in force last night following the announcement. For the most part, we’ve already gotten some solid backstory on Morgan. Speculation had run rampant since the crossover was announced. Many believed that Michael Cudlitz was a shoe-in for Abraham Ford making an appearance given that mentioned Texas location last season. Negan was also mentioned since his origin story appeared in the comics not all that long ago. Despite my initial confusion as to why Morgan would be chosen, now… it all makes sense.
When it comes to Morgan, I was satisfied with his backstory. I knew he looked for Rick. I knew that his son met a terrible end and it broke him. Eventually, Morgan found Eastman, trained and began to heal mentally. He set off and ultimately regrouped with Rick. For me, there wasn’t much more to tell there. I didn’t feel like I needed to see anything else but then… I remembered an interview Scott Gimple once gave. It was back in 2016 with Comicbook.com. Scott Gimple was directly asked about a “Whisperer” reference in the episode “Clear.” In that episode, crazy Morgan at one point was shouting at Rick saying, “People wearing dead people’s faces!” He had this to say,
“That definitely predated my knowledge of the Whisperers, because they were not at all in the book yet. Maybe that could wind up being a reference.”
While some have complained that Morgan crossing over to Fear the Walking Dead is nothing more than a cheap tactic to attract more viewers, I think it’s something much larger than that. I think this crossover will ultimately tie into our Fear characters being associated with the “Whisperers” in some way. When they finally do appear after Negan is defeated, Morgan will have some history with them. It’s also been clarified that Morgan crossing over doesn’t necessarily mean the end of his time on The Walking Dead. Production did just wrap on the 8th season and when he talked about saying goodbye to the cast and crew, it’s more than likely that’s what he was referring too.
Here’s my prediction for how things will progress from here for Fear the Walking Dead. At this point, I think Fear will only continue for another two seasons. Season four which begins filming today will introduce Lennie James as Morgan and have the group move north. At some point, the group will either interact with the “Whisperers” or turn into them. By the end of the season, Morgan will have gone mad and that storyline will go off and tie into the “Clear” episode. I feel like Fear the Walking Dead would then come back with a final season which would lead up to the building of the “Whisperers” and meet The Walking Dead in the current timeline. I could certainly be way off but that’s my guess for now.
